Avatar looks very cool.
Its a bit to CG though. Almost like a cartoon. Remember in Revenge of the Sith when Obi Wan was on Utapao and EVERYTHING was GC except Ewan McGregor?
It looks like that.
A little to clean and shiny. It needs to be grittyer to look more realistic.
Having all said that I still am really lookign foward to it. Im sure it will end up in my top 5 movies of the year (but honestly what kind of competition does it have?)

i hate Fox... they took it off :S
damn haven't seen the traielr... even my boss saw it and confunded the name with the cartoon
I am exited about this movie because its an old concept of Cameron that he knew couldn't be done right when he thought of it... I saw his conference on E3... and am all for this movie :D

Didn't they just make an animated movie that was basically the same thing recently? I mean the evil humans coming in and the good aliens use their bio-weapons/animals to fight back, and a human decides to aid them. I mean, sure in this one the human is in a cloned body that looks like an alien, but still. Doesn't seem to original of an idea.

New trailer is now up for this movie. Much better than the teaser I posted earlier. I am now very excited to see this movie!

Sorry about that, I really wish I knew why websites do that. This website says the trailer should be viewable for everyone.

The critics are already calling it "Dances with Smurfs."

I got to see a a 15 minute preview of this movie today. I still plan to go see it, but I'm a little disappointed that it seems to be a environmentalist, anti-government, anti-military, anti-corporation political statement cleverly concealed in some very amazing CGI and special effects :-(
Maybe if you think of it as a post-colonial literary work it won't make you feel dirty.

Does the preview explain why the military is on the ground fighting the aliens instead of nuking them from orbit. It just seems easier to drop a few asteroids on the planet and then take what you want instead of fighting aliens in the jungle where they have home ground advantage.
Also if the military can make copies of the aliens and have it controlled buy their own forces why are they using bulky tank suits?
I'm going to see the movie anyway because 3 hours of cgi explosions is a good way to spend a Friday night.

Not really. I don't think the humans sent the aliens to colonize the planet, only to later feel taken advantage of and rebel against the humans. Seems a lot more like the previous example. Though "Revolutionary War the Space Opera" might not be too bad a movie. We could even get M Night Shyamalan to direct it, the twist is that the aliens and humans fighting is all just a really advanced video game in the future. "What a twist!"

Yes but what the "aliens" turn out to be the decendents of avatars that went through a stargate and got looped back in time by a solar flare? Then what mister smarty pants? :)

Check it
Awesome! And I've decided to think of the antagonists as Colonial Brits! I feel OK, now!

Then this movie may be far worse and or far better than I feared. That is to say this kind of plot twist might push it into 'so bad it's good' territory.

I'm anti- all those things, so I think I'll love it!

Ok, just got back from the movie a little while ago.
The story is the typical evil corp/military picking on the primatives, but the good "civilized" folks team up with the primatives and effectively save the day. You might notice that without the good "civilized" folks, the primatives would have gotten their asses beaten even worse. Also some environmental message about how everything is tied together (you hurt the trees, then you hurt yourself), blah.
I found the creatures interesting. Of course the special effects, that weren't hampered by the 3Dness, were good. The large blue cat folks were fine, though I didn't think they should actually be stronger than a human. The world has a lower gravity, this should mean that humans are more dense and probably should be pound for pound stronger than the catfolk. Of course taller = stronger to most people and they wouldn't quite understand that. Also the catfolk didn't seem to be of the same evolutionary tract as the rest (most creatures had 6 limbs and 2 tentacles, catfolk had 4 limbs and one tentacle, yes they are cat-twi'lek).
I still can't really understand why people would use the avatars, especially since they extremely expensive and can only be used with one person.
Will there be a sequel? I don't know, like I said it was too pricey and the 3D didn't really enhance the experience. What I would like to see is that these people were once very advanced technologically and decided to genetically engineer this entire planet and go "native". This would explain why they are different, but can interact with the local lifeforms (the creatures were designed for it). I think it would also be more interesting especially if they found some ancient technology (being stuck on one planet riding dinos is cool, but not something I enjoy in a sci-fi story ultimately).

My only concern really is whether or not it will distract makers of twi'lek and orc porn from their trade rather than enrich it.
TMI?

As I've read so far it's not so much the military but corporate mercenaries. And chucking asteroids isn't as easy as one would think, and not very precise.
Also not being the strict military, one may be limited as to what tactics one could use, presumably ones that leave little or no traces of the activity performed.
Previews don't generally give much in explanations... you gotta shell out the bucks for the meat of the story.

Saw this movie yesterday, and it'll require a few more viewings for me to decide if it's my new favorite James Cameron movie (an honor currently held by "Aliens").
And to answer an older post... yes, the movie does indeed explain why the "military" isn't nuking the site from orbit—because...
Anyway... it's a really great movie. The 3D element was both incredible and too distracting; I'm not sure if that's because I sat too close to the screen or because the anti-glare portion of my glasses interacted strangely with the 3D lenses or what.
Not sure if it's my favorite of the year; that's a close call between it and "District 9," "Paranormal Activity," and "Inglourious Basterds." The only part of Avatar that I didn't like was the choice to use a song in english over the end credits. It would have been better to simply have the (really beautiful) score over the end credits, or even BETTER to have the song sung in the alien's language. That would have rocked.
EDIT: And yes indeed, the movie is VERY anti-corporation, anti-war, pro-enviornment. Which is kind of another way of saying "Pro-James Jacobs" to be honest. Your Mileage May Vary, but the movie's politics were pretty much 100% in sync with my own (and the religious element was maybe 80% in sync with my own too), so if that kinda thing's a deal-breaker, you might want to pass, I guess.

A thought just occured to me about the whole "noble savage" idea and such, especially in this movie.

I have wondered if, given the presence of powered armor, dropships that appear similar to sme of his earlier work, and Sigorney Weaver, if this is not supposed to be set in a shed universe with Aliens.

I would say not. If only because at one point Michael Biehn was in talks to be in the movie but Cameron decided not to cast them specifically because he didn't want folks to think it was Aliens.
