PRD download for offline usage

Website Feedback

Would this basically be identical to the PDF? Hyperlinks and everything? Coz at our gaming table there's no internet available and it would be nice to have a cool interlinked page a la d20srd.org to use...

I'm aware of it being anti-commercial to have a paid for PDF in circulation, and also having a download of the free PRD available. In an ideal world I'd buy all three - the PRD for speed and hyper-linkage magic, the PDF for instant fluff lookup, and the book for when my eyes give out looking at this screen in front of me and hitting page down all the time (or when a lappy isn't appropriate of course)!

Is this being considered? Or would the PDF handle all my insta-lookup needs? Thanks!

The PDF is fully hyperlinked (or at least, it will be, after we roll out a few fixes), and also contains art and the non-Open Game Content. It should work well for your needs.

Except one big issue - the PDF is a big file. Even with a fairly powerful system, it doesn't scroll or load very fast, whether in Adobe, Foxit, or whatever. Filesize wise you're looking at 91 megs zipped for the PDF vs. ~20 megs unzipped total for the local version of the PRD. (The download for subscribers to d20srd.org is 30 megs zipped, so I guessed around 20 if you subtract Epic, Psionics, and Deities and Demigods content)

Yes, there are ways for somebody to download the whole site and convert it into a local version, but a download for subscribers would be greatly appreciated. Hell, even charging $10 or even $20 for it wouldn't annoy me that much. I know the reasons against it are so vast that it'll never happen, but there are definitely benefits to the html version that the PDF just can't touch.

Like Kvantum said, the pdf can be a bit of a pain to maneuver around in, because of its size. I'd happily pay another $10 for a offline html version of the PRD (yes, I know how to basically do it myself, but I'd like to support Paizo even more in this).
Either that or a less art (and thus resources) intensive pdf, heck I'd even pay another $10 for that too.

I know bumping is frowned upon, I'm just curious if anyone from Paizo have seen the suggestions offered since Vic's answer.

You, my friend, is a machine! :-D

EDIT:
Just a correction to the downloads. The artists name in two of the iPod wallpapers is Jesper Ejsing (the n and g are switched in the filename).

Thanks for the compliment and I'll correct the filenames :)

Filenames fixed. My apologies to the artist!

As the PRD is open content, I guess downloading a copy for offline usage would be ok.

(Please Paizo staff, correct me if i'm wrong!)

Here is a simple way to do it : HTTrack.

I just tried and the PRD web site, fully linked is a mere 7.1 mg. You just need to open the index in your browser, and the links are redirected to the local files on your hard drive. Nice! Thanks for the idea!

I am not a Paizo person, but I can assure you that making an offline, downloadable version, of open content, can not be anything BUT ok.

HTTRACK is precisely how I made the one that is currently available for download on d20pfsrd.com (linked to above). Fair warning though, the one that I have made available is a downloadable copy of d20pfsrd.com though, and not of the official PRD.

Some people may not be either technical enough to run HTTrack, or, simply not want to bother. For either group, you can find the downloadable site in the link above.

For those who are technical enough, or who simply don't mind the hassle of downloading the application, installing it, configuring it, etc, more power to you, HTTRack is a great tool.

If you want to host a copy of the official PRD, I can mail it to you.

I too would like the PRD in PDF format for easy of use and functionality.

That's alright.

I'd rather just host the downloadable copy of my site. My site is meant to be a fan-maintained version of the PRD, not an exact mirror of the PRD itself. While d20pfsrd.com has the same information as the PRD, in some cases I've moved some things around, or duplicated some information in multiple places in order to make it easier to find.

Besides, I wouldn't want to confuse things even more by hosting a copy of the PRD as some people already get things mixed up and think my site is somehow official. Having the PRD on there might make it even more confusing. Thanks though!

Wait, what?

You want the PRD in PDF format? Isn't that what the PDF Paizo has posted for $10 is? What is it you want exactly? If its a web-based copy of the rules you can keep on your local laptop or pc, you can nab a copy of d20pfsrd.com from the downloads page, or you can use HTTRack to create an offline copy of the PRD yourself.

The PDF is, as others have stated, huge and detailed. A non picture/smaller file would be nice for ease of use, because even my laptop can't run it very smoothly, and I can work adobe on mine.

P.S.
Your files are perfect thanks

Yes, while I fully appreciate the beauty of the PDF, for me, personally, the speed is not really workable in an actual session. If I am PREPARING for a session, I could conceivably use the PDF, because speed isn't as much of a requirement then. However, I would still be faced with the pain of cycling, sequentially, through every search result until I got to the one I wanted on page 384. Having to hit Next, Next, Next, Next, Next, Next, Next, Next, Next, Next, Next, Next, Next, to get through all of the words that are NOT what I am looking for and watching Acrobat just chug along until it eventually gets to the page I want.... just... isn't going to cut it for me.

A website with a good search function resolves both the speed of searching and the manner in which search results are presented to you. You do not have to go sequentially through search results, you get a list on a page, you scan the list, see the one you think is right, click, then you are there. Its just inherently superior to deal with a website over a PDF, but, again, that may just be me and my hardware or Acrobat setup. As they always say, YMMV.

Rock on. Glad they work for you. As I said on the site, I will be updating that downloadable version as I continue to tweak the site and incorporate errata etc. I'd say check back in a few weeks and see if there is a new one listed for download.

Yeah exactly, HTTrack was also the program I had in mind when I mentioned above that I knew how to do it on my own. But it does require a little knowledge of websites to use it to its full extent.
