Good morning, everyone.
I'm off to drop the puppy off at my in-laws for a "play date" with their dog, then I'm probably going to skip giving blood because of the cough I developed this morning. It's gonna be another busy day at work, anyway, so it will work out better for me to postpone.
Y'all be good. :)
By the way, here's my submission for the Wayfinder fanzine. Let me know what you think.
Garathel Tadolellon’s dark soul led his Kyonin community to exile him to the outside world. The community’s elders reasoned that he fit in better with outsiders, so he should live with them. Garathel embraced his exile and sought to live in the darkness in defiance of his former people’s preference for the light.
He discovered he had a talent for quietly and efficiently killing other humanoids. He came to the attention of a variety of nefarious groups and his star rose quickly in the underworld. His clients considered him so good at his job that they never complained about Garathel only discussing and performing his deeds at night. Because of his predilections, clients referred to him as the Nightfiend, a name Garathel proudly accepted. The Nightfiend perpetrated a series of assassinations in Taldor and Galt, and as his killings became more widely known, adventuring parties traveled to those lands to put a stop to his murders. One group, the Brothers of Mercy, had devised a peculiar way to reform their adversaries—subduing them and placing a helm of opposite alignment on them. They set up a meeting in Oppara with Garathel at sunset and managed to surprise him and place the helm on him. Garathel then surprised them by invoking a teleport spell from a scroll, causing the helm to explode and killing all but one of the Brothers. He disappeared to a safe house and fell unconscious.
When he awoke later that night, Garathel realized he had changed and, per his newfound outlook, decided to apply his talents for the greater good. Dawn arrived, and Garathel collapsed again. By the time the sun rose, Garathel awoke and all beneficent thoughts vanished as the Nightfiend’s personality reasserted itself. He determined that the incident was the work of a rival and took precautions against future ambushes by setting traps at his various meeting places. He spent the day researching the group that attacked him and making plans to kill them one by one. At dusk, however, he collapsed for 10 minutes and then awoke as the good Garathel. This persona understood his condition and, to his advantage, knew everything his daytime persona knew, including the evil Garathel’s mistaken notion that he blacked out at dusk and awoke at dawn.
Armed with this knowledge, Garathel took the name “Night’s Friend” and researched ways to exert complete control. After a near disaster where he refused a job and had to kill the shocked client, he realized he had to exercise caution. He returned to where he “blacked out” and, when he could, he meditated to ensure the daytime alter ego didn’t become suspicious. To his surprise, he raised no suspicions with his clients when he declared he would only meet with them and perform assassinations during the day. Garathel’s evil persona, taking the moniker “The Daykiller,” became increasingly paranoid. He hadn’t missed a mark since the incident, but he could sense something was “off” with his assassinations. He still hasn’t realized that Night’s Friend sets up narrow escapes for all his potential victims, by providing antidotes for the Daykiller’s poisons or equipping them with magic to give the illusion of their deaths.
The Daykiller came to the conclusion that he stays active during daylight hours, and he tries to maximize the number of hours he can stay active. To this end, he has taken up residence in Kalsgard during the summer and works via sending spells to arrange jobs. He too has decided to correct the condition causing his blackouts, and Night’s Friend fears that the Daykiller, who is much more ruthless, will achieve his goal first or discover Night’s Friend’s presence.

Before Combat If Garathel knows he will face armed resistance, he applies poison to his rapier (black adder venom if he’s the Daykiller, or drow poison if he’s Night’s Friend). He picks a good vantage point and waits in the shadows for an opportunity to strike with his crossbow. He uses his death attack to kill or paralyze an opponent, depending on the personality in control. After making the attack, Garathel attempts to immediately use Stealth to hide again.
During Combat Garathel applies poison to his rapier, if he hasn’t done so already. If possible, he continues to fire crossbow bolts from his hiding spot. If he has to engage in melee, he uses Bluff to feint and get more uses out of his sneak attack.
Morale Garathel will not continue a fight when he drops below 20 hit points. He attempts a Bluff check to distract his opponents, so he can then use Stealth to make his getaway. Failing that, he makes use of his dust of disappearance or a scroll of teleport to escape, depending on the situation.

Using Garathel Tadolellon in your campaign
The DM could plant stories about the Nightfiend while the characters progress in their careers. Then the PCs could meet the surviving Brother of Mercy who relates his tale about dispatching the Nightfiend at great cost to his compatriots. The characters would then hear about the Daykiller who appears to have the same methods as the Nightfiend. Either by being sent on a mission or learning that an NPC they care about is imperiled, the party will confront the Daykiller after his assassination attempt. When he escapes, the PCs will discover that the NPC is truly alive. Night’s Friend sees the party’s resourcefulness and approaches them to help remove the Daykiller persona. Of course, he will have to convince the party of his good intentions after they’ve run into his alter ego.
Alternately, Night’s Friend could approach the PCs to inform them that he will attempt to kill one of them the next day. He provides the target with an antidote for the poison he plans to use and a scroll of teleport, and asks politely that they not kill him when they see him again.
Finally, as a stand-alone adventure, Night’s Friend could approach the party to enlist their aid in removing his evil side after learning that an imminent solar eclipse will reveal his identity to the Daykiller. The adventure will require the PCs to travel with Garathel, and they must find ways to subdue the Daykiller during the day while they search for a way to complete the transformation the helm started.

The two of them have such chemistry! It is so enjoyable to watch, and they actually keep things close to realistic. I have cried and laughed all in one episode.

Agreed - they are perfect foils for each other.
I found out over the weekend that Season 1 is out on DVD. The outtakes and bloopers are supposed to be priceless. I may have to grab it in the next couple of weeks.
