Rambler's Gen Con: Highlights and Low Points

Gamer Life General Discussion

Grand Lodge

Got home last night after a fun weekend of gaming and socializing.

I had a lot of long-winded commentary (see alias), so I thought that I'd start my own thread rather than jack Dragnmoon's.

Highlight #1: Volunteering for Paizo
I went thru True Dungeon on Thursday morning. After that, I spent at least part of each of the remaining 10 slots doing stuff for Paizo and Pathfinder: running PFS scenarios, assisting with the interactive, mustering rooms, setting up/taking down my doomed Yetisburg game (more on that later), being a backup GM, helping people make characters, subbing in/gofering for Liz.... and the whole experience was great! There were challenges, but the VAST majority of players and other volunteers were patient, enthusiastic and fun. And the Paizo folks treat their volunteers very well.

Highlight #2: The Annual Werecabbage Werewolf Dinner
A great time with the Cabbages and the Paizo folks. Poor, poor villagers. And it could have been even bloodier if it weren't for the amazing Dr Alvarez.

Highlight #3: Going for a night of beverages with Daigle, Boomer, Hitchcock, and Craig. Great group of guys to just hang with - and there was actually not much game talk.

Grand Lodge

Highlight #4: Rooming with RPG Superstar Neil Spicer
Neil is a true gentleman and a great roomie. Had a great time going out for lunch and talking sports with him.

And from our limited discussions on Fellnight Queen, I can tell you all that this is going to be an AWEsome adventure.

Highlight #4
Getting my PFRPG book, and getting it signed by Jason Buulmahn (spell-corrected for we Queen's English speakers).

Highlight #5 The Saturday night interactive
Kudos to the players, who embraced this event whole-heartedly, and elevated it to something that will be talked about for years.

Highlight #6:
Being told by one of the Paizo staff that I should be running the Delve, not playing in it.

Highlight #7:
Not only cookies from Lilith, but also brownies from Lilith!!

Highlight #8: Chocolate-covered Bacon!

Grand Lodge

Low Point #1: No Life-Sized Yetisburg
Unfortunately I was too late to make the programme, and the errata screens were non-functional for the first day-and-a-bit, so no one even knew the event was running. Next year I will plan it earlier!

Low Point #2: The Shrouded One coming unshrouded
Being behind Nic Logue while he climbs onto a table, causing his attire to slip, is enough to make you pray for pixellation.

Low Point #3: Vaughan

Grand Lodge

And the biggest Highlight of all:
getting to spend 5 days with a lot of great people while playing games.

Dude! You think the convention hall has realized that the table is wasted? I can just see the next gathering of con goers (for football or something totally different) and a group sits at that table and they load it up with food or something and WHAM! It goes to the floor!

PS: I averted my eyes and moved to another location just as that combat started.

Amen.

Next year, we may make it. Money saving planning has already started.

you should have jacked my thread, that is what it is there for.

Next year we need to do a better job at mustering Paizo Board Fans, Other then Wednesday night, I barely saw any of you, And the con is lonely by yourself :-(. I would have had a much metter time If I was able to hang with some of you during the Con.

This one warms my heart and makes me a bit jealous too. Wish I coulda been there. This being the third Con in a row that the Cabbages have continued to do this it is now officially "tradition" and thus my hopes are high that I'll get to go next year and be a part of the Werewolf game again. :)

Please do, Steve. We miss you dearly. All of the "remember the time..." stories from previous cons got me while I was there. You must make it next year.

Clearly, that shouldn't be much of a highlight. ;-)

Ah, the fine nuances of football vs. hockey...and baseball vs. basketball. In all honesty, though, I put you down as the truest gentleman. I wouldn't have been able to go to GenCon this year if you hadn't offered a place to crash. And, being at the Hyatt, the room had the best access to the convention center and the better restaurants in Indy.

As in awesome for any GM who wants to TPK the PCs? ;-)

Actually, I'm really anxious about the adventure. It isn't yet awesome enough in my own eyes, but we're all our own worst critics. I'm just counting on Sean (my developer) and the rest of the Paizo staff (editors, art directors, etc.) to dunk the whole thing in 100% pure awesome before it hits the market. And I'm confident they will...

Glad I found your GenCon thread,
--Neil
