Well at Comic Con Zach Snyder and Frank Miller both confirmed that a sequel to the film is in the works. While there's talk about if it'll be a prequel or a sequel, most are betting on the former. Seeing a sequel hard to pull off when only Dilios survived the first one.
While the working title was 300 2 it's rumored the new title is Sparta

Historically there was a sequel to the Battle of Thermopylae, but it doesn't (for obvious reasons) involve the Spartans. That sequel would be the naval Battle of Salamis. ;D
For some reason, I do not expect this to be the subject of the forthcoming movie. :(
The Battle of Plataea perhaps? Haven't taken a history class in a while but I believe that was the major land confrontation between the Spartan led Greek forces and Persia. It occured a while after Salamis if I remember correctly.
They could also try to do something with the Peloponnesian War where Sparta fought for control of the Greek world with Athens.
Xenophons march to the sea would be fantastic. Good epic material.... I'm trying to remember..... I wanna say ten thousand Greek mercenaries trapped in Persia trying to fight their way back to the Aegean after their leader was executed and the Persian they were fighting for was defeated. That would make for a proper follow up. Though I'm pretty sure they were Athenian.... not positive.

It would be more interesting to have a film about the battle of Marathon than it would to have a film about the Spartans themselves.
The Battle of Marathon was actually ten years early 490 B.C. It was actually a seperate invasion.... the prequel invasion if you will led by a different Persian leader, Darius. The Spartans did not arrive in time to fight the Persians and the Athenians bore the brunt of the fighting.
Athenians just don't have the cool factor of the Spartans.
