Silver Crusade

Another vote for the animated movie(again, NOT THE SERIES WE CANNOT STRESS THAT ENOUGH) being the second best Highlander movie after the original.

Although the absense of Queen is downright criminal.

The lead villain does get a guitar solo though!

None of the movie sequels are worth watching. Ever.

Especially Endgame.

I was a huge fan of the original movie. My wife was a huge fan of the television series. We went to see this movie early on when we first stated dating.

We left the theater each feeling as if we were actually capable of murder should we run into anyone responsible for the film.

Silver Crusade

Endgame managed to wreck both Connor and Duncan's characters, amazingly.

Heh.

The first movie was fairly good (the plot and acting had some issues, IMO), with the cinematography being excellent (especially for the time). II and III were horrible and mediocre, respectively. I haven't seen the series, any of the anime, or the later movies.

I also believe they should have left the original alone (like The Usual Suspects). Failing that, they should have limited themselves to prequels (which wouldn't have been that difficult, considering all of the vignettes and references). Heck, they could have probably done a movie about each of the Immortals in the original!

I will be in the minority, and say the movie sucked. I loved it when I saw it, but the acting was terrible, the swordfighting horrible, and the effects. Watching the kurgon climb the stairs knocking blocks made from styrofoam down was just bad... It had a great story and plot. I really think this could be remade very well as long as it is not touched my anyone who previously had a hand in it. (And if they made sure not go go 2 hours of action and focus on the characters.)

I liked the series, until it ran away with itself.

You´ve got a point there. The acting was surely very 80ies, the special effects were questionable. The story was the thing that got this one going. I share your fears that this will be not the case in a remake, given the present preference for action first, and plot and characters a very distant second.

I agree that from a technical standpoint, partcularly in light of modern techniques, the film could use work. It reminds me of Red Dawn. When I saw it in the eighties I thought it was one of the best movies I had seen, Then when I watched it again a few years ago I was amazed at how I could ever consider something so bad to be a great movie. Highlande though, even with the cheesy effects and everything, still holds up for me, because it still has a story and character that I can relate too.

WOA!!!! David I didn't know you were an immortal who struggled through endless sword fight vieing for the ultimate brize in a bloody secret war... Man you are so awesome. :P

No but seriously I agree in that it is an awesome movie, cheesy effects and all. I love it despite of all its flaws (the Kurgan is simealtaneously one of the worst and best villians in my opinion).

(PS: David I mean that all in jest, and am not trying to attack you :)
Also, I agree 150% about Red Dawn being awesome when it came out but not so much these days. Honestly I feel that way about alot of stuff I grew up with )

I could tell you stories, but then I would have to kill you.

And then there would be lightning and he'd have to hold his sword up in the air . . . really, its just a big hassle.

Spoiler:
You must be used to dealing with people that have no sene of humor.

I am sure most of you know about it, but for those who don't, there is an official Highlander RPG, as well as some non-official D20 rules to play immortals.

It's the setting that Black Gate Published used as the basis for their Legacy: War of Ages role-playing game.

Spoiler:

Disclaimer
Before and after each Legacy: War of Ages game session, the Game Moderator should read the following aloud so that all the players hear it:

"Legacy: War of Ages is a work of fiction, and it is solely for entertainment. Legacy: War of Ages does not endorse or support violence, criminal activity, contempt for authority, belief in psychic powers or the supernatural, subversion, political and social diversity, or any other activity not expressly permitted by the las of the United States of America".

Legacy: War of Ages is only a game. It it ever begins to become more important than real life, or if playing it results in anti-social behavior, put the game away. If anything within these pages leads you to illegal, violent, or self-destructive acts, seek professional help.

The game system and page layouts were virtually identical to original World of Darkness.

That was the disclaimer from the rulesbook. I imagine a Game Master chanting it sepulchrally as he dims the lights at the beginning of the session.

Silver Crusade

Wow.

I mean, I've seen disclaimers in RPG sourcebooks before, but to request that it be read to everyone at each session...

What year did this thing come out? Surely the blanket of fear of RPGs = The Devil had been pulled away a bit by the 90's, eh?

Dark Archive

I like the whole part about reading before and after every session. That must be one hell of a game.

If the material I found was correct, it was first released in 1993.

I had a copy of Legacy until it got destroyed in a move some years back, I always believed it was an attempt to crib Highlander without actually plunking down for the license. That said, it wasn't a bad piece of work.

Oh, it's a game. Stick Immortals into your old World of Darkness campaign and you're ready to go. (Come to think of it, WoD already had mummies...)

The part of the disclaimer that struck me was: "...subversion, political and social diversity, or any other activity not expressly permitted by the laws..."

That sounds snarky to me.

The Exchange

Ahh yes the infamous disclaimer. SO funny...
You notice they never released anything else?
