When I resume the campaign it is possible I may have an extra player. I plan on the dragon's backup being a CR 9 if the extra player shows up. The problem is I don't know what type of character would help Illthane the most. Should it be a caster, gish, archer, a flyer of some sort, or something I have not mentioned. I have time to create the NPC. I just have no idea what it should be?
If it matters, the extra player will be a caster focusing on buffing/debuffing spells with almost no ability to directly harm/kill anything.

My experience has been that casters are extremely helpful to Dragons. Essentially the players are faced with a difficult dichotomy when faced with a Dragon and a caster. The correct response for both is to pile on the damage to the exclusion of any other enemies. Dragons because they are so nasty that you can't have them hanging around recovering their breath weapon and doing their full suite of physical attacks. Casters because they are glass cannons.

I just finished selecting the spell list for the caster. That was a good idea, thanks.

For me, I was considering backing her up with a small cohort of draconic kobolds, among them a sorcerer. Of course, some of the kobolds at the return to the Whispering Cairn will be preparing Ilthane's deception -- an enormous inflatable black dragon "looming" above the entrance to the Cairn. And if they make their Listen checks by enough, the can actually hear the "pfft, pffft, ppfffft" as the kobolds desperately try to keep it inflated long enough to draw at least a little enemy fire... *evil grin*

My group have some super-hard PCs (3 divine PCs, sheesh!), who have some good (rolled) stats (one would have been 45 points in 3.5 point-buy!). They work together well, and haven't lost anyone yet, so went into chapter 3 at level 6.
Allustan left, to divert the looming silhouette of Ilthane from the attack, and the pair haven't been seen since.
I beefed up EaBWK with a small black wyrmling, who I assumed had been eating all the animal messengers from the keep.
This has fought two PCs and a cohort on the keep roof, and was later defending the large egg. Both times it fled, after a serious beating (40-50 hp damage).
It tricked them into smashing The Egg, so I forsee there being a huge grudge match when they meet again.
