I just started playing this game again. I got this when it first came out and played the original Escape Velocity, as well as EV Override. For those uninitiated, EV Nova is a CRPG set in space, where you are the pilot of a starship, represented by a 2D sprite. Your opportunities are varied. You can become a pirate and raid for profit, you can trade in expensive goods piled onto huge cargo ships, or you can enter into any of the main storylines and amass power.
In other words, this game is AWESOME. It has a huge modding community, with new ships, storylines, even total conversions of the game.
Those who have played it before, let this be the place for you to discuss the AWESOME. Those who haven't, GET THIS GAME NOW.

I hear you brother! I played all 3 of those back in the day, and loved them immensely. Even the famous (name escapes me...) total conversion mod. So I guess that makes 4. I love those open-world do what you want when you want it games. Much like Fallout 3 in modern times.
But while I don't have the time to replay them, I'd invite those of you who haven't to give them a try. They're cheap, offer tons of playtime, and plenty of freedom. (Don't get thrown off by the 1st time you see ships in space around you; your ship will get a few tweaks to make the visuals a little more appealing ;-))
IIRC, there are demos to try for free (shareware).

Hey! I remember this game! Ambrosia did an amazing job with Escape Velocity especially considering how small a company they were at the time; I frittered away a lot of time going through the various plots. One time, I snuck in at the tail end of a battle between a heavy duty pirate ship and some military vessel - pirate was left very weakened, military vessel floating waiting to be boarded, and I slip up in my little freighter, board the military ship, transfer my "flag" to it, and just barely get away as the pirate comes after me. Never was able to get that tactic to work ever again, it was pure chance one time. It was great though, had this powerful military ship, but meant every military ship treated me as a pirate, so I had to become one. Great times!
I bought a license to EV Override but never found much time to play. I'll have to take a look at EV Nova - thanks for bringing it to my attention.
