So my computer got infected with the Vundo trojan virus (random pop-up ads and slow connection) and I'm having a hard time cleaning it out. I ran my McAfee and tried to find some of the files manually without too much success. Anyone know of any (preferably free) ways to go about fixing this?

Reimage the HDD.

And next time, buy a Mac.

You can try the removal tool from Symantec

Vundo Removal tool

If that doesn't work:

Back up everything you want to save.
Then:
Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

Then reinstall Windows.
Or install Linux.
Or setup a virtual machine in Windows and do all your web surfing on there. (Google is your friend on this one).

If you got that virus, you probably have this one: "Known as Conficker or Downadup, it is spread by a recently discovered Microsoft Windows vulnerability, by guessing network passwords and by hand-carried consumer gadgets like USB keys."

Except what you back up may be infected...

Here are a couple of things to check Out...

Symantec Trojan.Vundo
McAfee Trojan.Vundo

Both describe the Trojan and the ways to remove it...

Only way he would have gotten that virus is if he has not update since October.. Microsoft fixed that a loooong time ago..

The High majority of people who get infected with that Virus have a Pirated OS and can't update because of that.

That said..there are people who never update......

I don't update my OS very often, but I do update and run my virus scanner every day. That has saved my bacon on many occasions.

Malware Bytes free download. Really good.

Oh you don't really want to go there do you? ;)

I run the "Avast!" Antivirus. It's free and, so far, no complaints.

Updating your OS or any software is just as important as updating your Virus scanner.

I've noticed that McAfee has a hard time locating Vundo and its variants. I picked up a free application called SuperAntispyware that managed to find and kill the bugger the two times it ended up on my computer.

My OS is set to auto update. I honestly don't know how often it actually does update.

SuperAntispyware is a great program. Two others that I recommend are Spybot-search&destroy and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. These three free applications are better than Norton or McAfee.

That might be true, but what are your alternatives? Delete all of your files? Obviously if you have a backup copy that's not on your computer, you should restore it from a backup, otherwise you just have to make backups of the essentials (like WoTC PDFs) and scan them with everything you can think of.

I use CLAMWIN personally with Spybot and Adaware. Seems to keep my PC clean.

Damn viruses! I hate them. Good luck with that issue!

Thanks for the help, guys.
I'll be trying to fix it tonight.
