PDF Sale - Recommend me some Pathfinder PDF's

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Ok, with the 35% PDF sale currently on I have decided to pick up some Pathfinder PDF's. The only ones I currently own are the free ones and the Rise of the Runelords AP. So I need suggestions!

Currently my list is:

D1: Crown of the Kobold King
J1: Entombed with the Pharaohs
E1: Carnival of Tears

So what do people think of those 3 adventures? Are there any other adventures I should be getting instead or in addition to those?

What about other Pathfinder PDF's? Any that stand out?

I can only speak for the APs, and I definitely recommend Curse of the Crimson Throne. It's got a little bit of everything, starting with much mayhem in an urban setting :) Lots of good twists and turns, and I'm having a total blast GMing it.

Legacy of Fire is just getting started, but what I've seen so far is awesome!

And don't forget to peek at all the Chronicles and Companions - a lot of good information there!

Well what exactly are you looking for? Adventures or fluff or crunch or all the above? Knowing what interests you the most will help with suggestions.

I will say i have yet to buy a Paizo product and been disappointed, some I liked more than others but often that is a matter of taste. For the record I own all the Pathfinder stuff but a couple of their modules.

Are there any medium to high-level modules with an emphasis on social encounters/roleplaying? I don't care much for extended combat.

My preferences are probably adventures first, then fluff, then crunch. That's not to say I'm not interested in crunch. I am, but I already have a heap of rules from the core 3 and the Complete series. Adventures are always useful and I like reading fluff, even if I never use it directly.

Hi Olaf,

Generally, I'm a dead-tree guy, I much prefer flipping through pages of a physical book, and I always carry one with me to read on the tram, or curl up on the couch etc. However, I also enjoy the convenience of PDFs for player handouts etc.

With this in mind, unless you already have the Pathfinder Chronicles: Campaign Setting hardcover, I think this would make a great PDF purchase. It contains double-page spreads for each race, and single-page spreads for each class. Similarly, each region (eg, Absalom, Cheliax, Mwangi, Osirion, Varisia etc) starts and ends on a new page. This makes it easy to print out pages relevant for your players. Eg, one of your players wants to play a halfling Chelish cleric of Norgorber - print out the halfling, cleric, and Cheliax pages as character background hand-outs. The Religions section is also useful, one half-page column per deity, but these have been expanded to double-page spreads in the Gods and Magic book, which itself might make another worthwhile PDF purchase.

I find when players ask for information about the setting for their character backgrounds, the Campaign settign hardcover, and Gods and Magic are two books I keep referring back to, and are perfectly formatted for player hand-outs.

Pathfinder Society scenarios are cheap, fun and easy to run, and currently only available as PDFs, so no need to worry about purchasing the PDF and then wishing you'd bought the hard copy. Because PDFs are instant downloads (no need to wait on international shipping), you could purchase one or two, see if you like it, and then follow up with more before the end of April.

You can run them for your home group, and the four hour duration makes them easy to run as game day events at your local store (GameQuest?) or something to run for new players without committing to an ongoing Adventure Path. For a GM, the Pathfinder Society scenarios have a lot of replay value (with new players each session).

The Campaign Setting was definitely in my sights (despite already having 3 settings that I don't use! :-) ).

Would the Campaign Setting and Gods and Magic give me most of the base detail for Golorian(sp?)? Or would I need other books as well?

The Pathfinder Society adventures sound like good ideas for 4 hour one-shot adventures. I'll give them a look. Any suggestions as to which ones are good?

Any other suggestions?

You'll use this one!

Certainly there are regional books that go into more detail, but that depends on where your adventures are set and personal preference for character background.

I'd recommend getting these two for starters, unless there are others that immediately catch your interest, or you intend running adventures set in a specific region. Then give the campaign setting a read and see which regions grab your interest.

Obviously, for four-hour one-shot adventures, don't expect anything as cohesive and compelling as the Adventure Path series, there tend to be a little random, but can be a lot of fun to play.

There's nothing wrong with starting with #1 and working your way through. Though some have proven to be a little challenging for first level characters and should be delayed until your group has a level or two under their belt. Have a read through the Pathfinder Society boards for recommendations.

I've ran D0, D1, D1.5, and they're all fun adventures. D1: Crown of the Kobold King is a natural choice if you've already downloaded the free D0: Hollow's Last Hope and D1.5: Revenge of the Kobold King, these and E1: Carnival of Tears are all set in Falcon's Hollow, so Pathfinder Chronicles: Guide to Darkmoon Vale which expands the region around Falcon's Hollow may also be a good choice, especially if you'd like ideas for continued adventuring in the region after running the published ones.

If you enjoyed the Rise of the Runelords adventure path, then you'll probably enjoy Curse of the Crimson Throne, Second Darkness or Legend of Fire.

If you're getting J1: Entombed with the Pharaohs, because you're attracted by the Egyptian theme, then Pathfinder Companion: Osirion, Land of the Pharaohs might interest you, as might Pathfinder Society scenarios #3 Murder on the Silken Caravan, #11 The Third Riddle, #15 The Asmodeus Mirage, all of which feature desert or Egyptian themes.

Just be aware that if played and reported as part of Pathfinder Society organised play campaign (which is a good thing to do!), you can't cross characters across between regular Pathfinder modules (eg Entombed with the Pharaohs) and Pathfinder Society scenarios. (Well, technically you could play your Pathfinder Society characters in Entombed with the Pharaohs, but you couldn't carry over any of the experience or treasure etc into Pathfinder Society scenarios, as all these get tracked on your characters Chronicle sheet for each scenario - refer to the Pathfinder Society Guide to Organised Play).

Both the Campaign Setting hardback and Gods and Magic are excellent buys. If your thinking about Pathfinder Society Scenarios then #4 The Frozen Fingers of Midnight is an excellent buy [moreso if you love vikings like me!], #12 Stay of Execution is prison based manhunt and got most of the Darkmoon Vale stuff Darkwhite suggested elsewhere on this thread - all very good. I also grabbed some of Nick Logue's Sinister Adventure pdfs - mainly the Razor Sea material and adventure - again great twisted fun to flesh out seaborne adventures or encounters.

We're playing D1: Crown of the Kobold King right now (in fact, just last night) and it's a blast. We got there via D0: Hollow's last hope and I also bought Pathfinder Chronicles: Guide to Darkmoon Vale as a supplement.

D1: is actually much bigger than I expected it to be. I have a small party of only two players and one NPC. But we picked up another in the storyline (No spoilers) and he's helping out a bit.

D1.5 is a natural extension of D1 and in fact, it requires some plot points from D1.

D4 is sick and twisted and really cool. It also wraps up the storyline while also allowing the possibility for a particular foe to return to haunt your party at a later date.

I don't have E1: Carnival of Tears but I think my players will like it. However, I've read reviews that E1 is particularly violent and gruesome so be forewarned.

But that series of PDFs along with the Class Monsters Revisited would be a really good selection. Since I have most of them already I'm going to start with the Burnt Offerings adventure path. I'm looking forward to seeing how they build a 1st level to 20th level story line continuity. And I'm REALLY looking forward to playing it.

Although currently released Pathfinder Adventure Paths don't extend to 20th level as the Dungeon magazine Adventure Paths did:

Pathfinder #6—Rise of the Runelords Chapter 6: "Spires of Xin-Shalast"
For characters of 14th to 15th level.

I have the lot, I havent found the pathfinder society stuff that useful but I am not a fan of one off sessions. Otherwise you pretty much cant go wrong at this price.

get D4 to follow on from D1.5.

I liked W1, a great outdoor adventure that you can turn into a mini campaign (and level approprite to those who have finished D4

avoid D2, too bitsy

there is a follow up to J1 as well- IMO it was better than J1 so if you liked J1 check out the follow up and get it.

High level- "The Demon Within" (sorry cant remember the number)

Sovereign Court

I'm gonna recomend the monster revisited line of products, I really like how they did it. It looks great is good reading and has two products currently available with a third down the pipe.
