In-Game Titles

It's a big pet peeve of mine when a DM, in game, refers to another character as his/her class name. Instead of saying evocative descriptions, or simply a title or some other reference, in-game, that would make sense.

So my question is this: What are some titles/descriptives of the base classes? For example: a dwarf rogue could be a 'locksmith', a cleric could be 'father', or 'friar', a fighter could be 'lieutenant' (depending on background).

Any game/edition applies.

Totally agree... who, or what, is a "fighter" anyways... In my games I avoid the class titles... people are gladiators, warriors, soldiers. I use acolyte, priest, shaman, mage, adept, magician, con man, ruffian, grifter, thief... and a bunch of others I don't remember right now.

Hmm, running down the OGL core.

Barbarian: Tribeman, savage, wildman, gaijin, outlander. Alternately Goth, Hun...

Bard: Bard (duh) Minstrel (just look out for immature players referencing the minstrel cycle) troubador, annoyance, 5th wheel, Elan.

Cleric: Father, Brother, Sister, Friar, priest priestess, chosen one. Annoying preachy guy with a stick is frowned on.

Druid: Doo-dad, nature priest, a lot of the cleric ones work. So does Smelly animal talking nut jo- oh, is that your Dire bear behind me?

Fighter: Warrior, guardsman, myrmidyon. Dumb guy with stick is often used at least 40' away, unless he has a bow.

Monk: Master, adapt, student, colours maybe (Black Ember sounds presumptous until you realize it's her belt colour and her name) I advise against Forget your swords in your other robes?

Paladin: Various titles come to mind from the clerics. Also Holy and Pious. And don't forget Saphire Guardsman Again "Mr. Stick up his aft" isn't approved.

Ranger: Woodsman, forrester, poacher. mighty, Morphing, and power are right out. (aside, I drove our Greyhawk GM nuts singing 'go go gnarly rangers')

Rogue: Thief roaver nomad vagabond, call me what you will.

Sorcerer: Witch, mutant, sorcerer, warlock, wizard (like Joe peseant can tell 'em apart) "Wizard's redheaded stepchild" is frowned on.

Wizard: Wizard, witch, scholar, robes. Guy you don't want to frak with.

I was playing a rogue in a game when one of the new players asked what I was playing. I said, "A squire".

"What's a squire? I’ve never heard of that class."

Wrong on so many levels.

Weak. :P

Rogue¹: Adventurer, Bodyguard, Burglar, Con Artist, Cutpurse, Diplomat, Entertainer, Explorer, Mercenary, Second Story Man, Spy, Thug, Trader

¹Most of these work for other classes as well.

Side question: If you play a Ranger/Psychic Warrior, does that make you a Power Ranger? lol..

Thanks everyone, for the replies lol..

Footpad, Acquirer-of-interesting-objects, Entrepreneur, Scout

I came very close to including Scout and I do not think you are wrong for doing so. I left it out because I believe the Ranger makes a better Scout. If I remember correctly, one of the skills I think is essential for a good Scout is a cross-class skill for Rogues.
