The touchpad on my laptop has decide that it doesn't want to be cooperative in more and will cut out and stop working at odd times. I am planning on buying a laptop mouse, but before I do I want to know if it will function if the touchpad isn't. The problem seems to be with the touchpad reading the input.

I've run two laptops with bad touchpads with a USB or wireless mouse with no problems.

Thanks for that encouragement. While I'm getting pretty good at navigating the interweb with my tab key, it is rather annoying.

Your touchpad's inability to work shouldn't affect any other input devices you plug in your laptop. You should be able to plug a mini-mouse (laptop mouse.. not the cartoon) in with no problem.
