Black Gate: Adventures in Fantasy Literature

Books

Any fans of Black Gate out there? I noticed that, according to their website, not only have they not published since last summer, but they are not taking submissions. Having only recently discovered them, I'd hate to find out that they are folding, like so many genre magazines (and anthologies) have of late. Given our community, I figured someone would know. If I was a betting man, I'd lay odds that Erik is going to answer this with bad news. :(

(Sorry if I mis-posted as far as threads are concerned..."Books & Periodicals"?)

Bump

And again I say,

Spoiler:
bump.

Liberty's Edge

I love this magazine, but it shares something in common with Cemetery Dance, another (kind-of) bimonthly print magazine: eventually, there'll be a new issue. It might be late July before you see March's issue, but eventually...

In this case, don't be surprised to see the Fall 08 issue come out in May 09...

Thanks, Andrew.

I used to get copies, and I like them, but it's been years since I've seen any issues of Black Gate in the stores. I thought they'd gone out of business.

There's still going and have a very cool daily blog on their website, but they only managed to get out one issue last year, so it's sort of more of a hobby than a business at this point.

Very, very, very few speculative fiction magazines have anything approaching a regular schedule.

I am a fan of the magazine, by the way, and support it as I can with Planet Stories ads and by picking up issues on the newsstand when I see them.

Which is almost never, sadly.

Also, I have it on good authority that they'll be reopening submissions very soon. So presumably they're at least scraping by.

Thanks, guys. Somehow I was missing the blog updates, but I did notice that after I posted. There's going to have to be more reinvention of the way magazines and other small fiction venues work. At least we know one author who's found a successful outlet for serial fiction. :)
