Illusionists / Diviners

Scarab Sages

Disclaimer: I'm a complete n00b when it comes to 4e, so I'm sorry if I say anything that sounds stupid.

Right, a friend of mine wants to run a few of us through one of the published scenarios (I think the original 4e D&D day one), and asked us what characters we'd like to make. I was unsure, so went away and had a look.

My question is this: Is it possible to play illusionists or diviners in 4e? If so, which powers/feat do you recommend for good a roleplaying experience (emphasis on the 'role')?

Cheers! :D

I generally suggest for the Illusionist feel( and most other specialist mages) look on SCRIBD.COM and SEARCH for 4E. You should come up with a 4E supplement doc by STORMMU(i think thats his ID). This will give you the 'missing' class's from 4E which includes Bard, Barbarian, Conjurer,Illusionist, Enchanter and many others. Additional equipement lists, monsters, Rituals (rewritten from 3.5 to fit 4th ed). It's a fantastic book of over 420 pages and still growing.

The Diviner however is sort of gone though. You would probably use more Rituals for the diviner style.

But to be honest you need to look at the powers and look for style of powers that you can use for roleplay.

For example one of my mates has a halfling rogue and describes very detailed his sliding attack, or rolling under the enemys arm to strike. Things like that. That's the thing with this addition, the player should be writing his own style for Powers,Spells,Prayers etc and putting his own spin on it.
Give it a try. I'm DMing and I'm getting into the style of attacks for enemies and its fun.

If you want to play an illusionist, pick up a pdf copy of Dragon 364 (its free); there is a Class Acts article that includes a plethora of heroic tier wizard powers that are geered towards illusion. Between those spells, the PHB, and rituals, you can create an illusionist right now.

At this point, a diviner is not really part of any class, since almost all divinations are ritual based. Go with any class that gets Ritual Caster as a bonus feat and focus on the Divination rituals (warning, this could get expensive). I would recommend wizards, since they get free rituals when they level up. There are a lot of rituals in the PHB, the Forgotten Realms Players Guide, and a Dragon article called "Ritually Speaking," which you can still get for free (I forget the article number). Between those sources, you can create something of a diviner.

Thanks for the heads-up, both of you.

Time to get those articles and get my own spell 'descriptors' written, methinks!

Cheers! :D
