Re: How much does a slave cost? (Lots of spoilers)

Rise of the Runelords

Silver Crusade

Just a quick question.
How much does a slave cost? I am running the Seven Swords of Sin, inbetwen the Skin Saw murders and the Hook Mountain Massacer.

Vachedi, the goaler of the jail in sandpoint, has two sons who were captured by Kaer Magan Slavers. I plan to have the PCs come across these sons, and hopefully have the opportunity to buy them.

So what do you all think? How much should they cost?

I am also planning to move Hook Mountain and FT Ranik and Skulls crossing to the Fogscar mountains on the lost coast. I going to have Skulls corssing in the Fogscar mountains damming the Turnadok river, which flows though Sandpoint. Im going to put FT rannik at the southern tip of these mountains, and to put Hook Mountain in the Fogscar mountains.
My eventual plan is this, Tetsuo and Lyrie’s lives were spared, and they were sentenced to serve with the Black Arrows. Nualia was burned at the stake. Then the PCs follow their Skinsaw investigations to Magnimar. The PCs have defeated Xanesia and she has fled. The PCs end their investigations into the brothers seven in the beginning of summer in Magnimar. They are then hired by Wen Histani, a cleric of the church of Abadar, to retrieve the seven swords of sin. They take a month to travel across Varisia, have adventures on the way. I had them tangle with the red mantis over a box of voral’s phage. Once in Kaer maga, they will hopefully retrieve the swords and defeat Tyrana. Upon their return to Magnimar they will be rewarded by Wen Histani and she will take the Swords. I will simply explain them as plot devices useless to the PCs.
Then the Mayor will hire the PCs to go and look in on FT Ranik and the Black Arrows.
On their way north they will pass thorugh sand point, and encounter a gambling barge next to the Fat Man’s feed bag. They will discover that Xanesea has started a gambling business, and hopefully a fight will ensue and the bardge will burn down. They will discover that most of the town will have little butterfly tattoos Like Desna, on them, they are “vip” passes. If they use a detect magic, they will discover a Sihidron rune.
Anyways after the chance to be heros again, in snadpoint, the PCs will head north and go thorugh the Hook MT Massacer adventure. The town to be flooded will be Sand point. And the MOO or mother of oblivion will threaten sand point, before happily swimming back to the sea. they will meet Tetsuo and Lyrie along with the last of the black arrows in the Grauls barn.
Then at the end of the adventure the PCs will be givin FT Ranik, and will be made lords of the lost coast, with the windsong abby under their care as well as Sand point. They will be vassals of Magnimar. I will have Bruthumus the bugbear ranger and Orik be bandits they have to track down and deal with.
Eventually with the Fortress of the Storm Giants, they will be defending their home, and their home town, which they are responsible for.
Wiith Sins of the Saviors, The Cleric of Abadar Wen Histani will return and give the PCS the seven swords of sin. And they will find a way to reactivate them in the Rune forge.
Well those are my plans so far, but we all know how the the best laid plans of DMs survive in the hands of PCS. These ideas entirely my ideas, I got most of them from reading the message boards. I appologise for the rant.

Back to my origional question, How much would a slave cost? What do you guys think?

Sovereign Court

Looking at 3rd century Rome, 16th century Italy and 19th century U.S.A., slaves seem to cost somewhere between 4 and 10 times as much as horses, depending on their health and age. Very skilled or remarkable slaves don't seem to fall into any reliable range though.

So...about 500 gold. Gee, I wonder why this didn't make it into the equipment lists.

Silver Crusade

Selk Thank you for your post. 5x the gold of a horse, that seems like a good bench mark. so 500 gp. I'll use that as my bench mark. Thank you

The price for slaves found in Lords of Madness is CR (minimum 1) squared times 100 gp. This number is then multiplied by two, three, or four for the slave's great strength, beauty, skill, or exotic origin.

Scarab Sages

The Kalamar Player's Guide breaks it down as follows:
Skill and Class Level
unskilled - 10 gp
laborer - 25gp x Level
Craftsman - 75 x level
Scholar - 60 x level
Adventurer class - 100 x level

Age
young age - x 1/2
Adult - x1
middle aged x 3/4
Old - x 1/2
Venerable - x 1/4

Ability modifier total
1-3 +5 gp
4-6 +10 gp
7-12 +25 gp
13-24 +100 gp
25+ +200 gp

Race
Dwarf x2
Elf x3
Gnome x1.5
Half-elf, Half-orc, human x1
half-hobgoblin, hobgoblin x1.5
halfling x.75

EDIT: The Kalamar setting presumes a widespread and active slave trade. In places where there is a greater supply of slaves, the price will be lower than places where slaves are harder to come by. Also, places where slaves have greater legal protection will likely be places where slaves are more valuable as you must give them greater care thus creating a greater investment.
