Shadow in the sky inspiration?

Second Darkness

I'm watching Futurama: The Beast with a million Backs, and it starts with a huge rip in space appearing over the city of New New York.

Is that where Shadow in the Sky's blot comes from?

Now I regret not having warforged on Golarion - you could throw them into the blot and watch them blow up.

While I LOVE Futurama, I have not seen that many episodes...including the one you mention. No, my inspiration was more from late-70s/early-80s sci fi/horror comic books with names like "Strange Phenomena" and "Tunguska" and such.

It's not an episode, but a full-length movie (the second they did).

It starts with a huge rift appearing in the sky, and it just struck me as similar to a certain adventure I recently read. :)

A good scene from the movie (right from the start) shows the News, and the newscaster say something like this: "The rift in our universe has been hangin in the sky for over a month now. Panicked citicens are getting tired." (Shows people pointing at the sky and screaming hysterically for a couple of seconds before stopping, looking exhausted)

I won't say too much about the movie, but I'll just say I learned a new word: Gentacles. :D

(And it's a Billion Backs, not a Million)

Awesome! I didn't even know that movie existed! I'm going to have to check it out. Thanks for the tip...Gentacles [[shudders]]

It is a follow up to the preceding movie "Bender's Big Score", although I'm pretty sure that you don't really need to watch it to understand what is going on as they are mostly separate.

I had heard it was based on some video game (e.g., Final Fantasy).

And, since we're talking about Futurama: There's two more movies coming: Bender's Game (apparently this November!) and Into the Wild Green Yonder next year.

From the wikipedia about Bender's Game:

"In a comic-con 2007 cast reading previewing the four new movies featured in the Bender's Big Score DVD, it is shown that this chapter in Futurama's adventures will feature a Dungeons & Dragons-like setting where Bender dresses like a knight, Leela is a centaur and the Professor is a wizard. A teaser image depicts Fry as a Gollum-like creature, while the trailer shows him as a dragon. Amy will be appearing as the queen of the "Water Nymphos". Zoidberg will appear as a squid-like blob. Hermes, like Leela, will also become a centaur, as well as a hermaphrodite. According to David X. Cohen, the movie will be Futurama's "first real foray into the fantasy world as opposed to straight sci-fi".[4] The trailer also shows that much of the feature will spoof elements of Peter Jackson's version of The Lord of the Rings trilogy."
