Just what I need, something else to suck up my time.

The Exchange

I cannot imagine what this will do to Star Wars canon. Bioware is one of the last great RPG companies. What they did in KOTOR was fantastic. I am certain that this will be the definitive Star Wars Game. Years and Years from now it will debut, but when it does I won't be able to handle it. It will be worse than WoW in its ability to suck you in. I feel this game will be the end of me. I will die of a heart attack while playing it. The divorce and the loss of my custody battle for my children (since I didn't show up, being to busy playing this game) will ruin me. I will be forever rooted in cyberspace trying to escape my meaningless existence. Yes, this game will be great. Too great. Shoot me now, so I don't have to let anyone down once they release this selfish seed of evil incarnate.

Cheers,
Zuxius

~LAUGHTER in RT~

~grins~ I feel your pain, my friend. After 3 years of playing City of Heroes / Villains and wasting more time than I want to think about, I worry about a Star Wars MMO taking even more of my time. ~thinks~ Can we petition someone to add a few more hours to the day so we can play all of our games?

Sovereign Court

I don't like MMOs in general, but I am also terrified that this will be good. I just don't have that many hours to serve...

I dunno. I'm terrifically upset by this. I've been waiting ages for KOTOR 3 and now there's this. I don't play MMORPGs. I don't want to. I like the immersion in stories of the single player games. When I want to play something with my friends, I have a tabletop designed for just that. On my computer, I play single player RPGs. Nary the twain shall meet. Really, I'm so downed by this, I'm thinking of boycotting BioWare forever. Blech.

One of the THings they are Hyping about this MMO, is the Single Player story experience feel you got from the Original Games..

Just because it is a MMO.. does not mean it can't be played with out others..

Edit: Also If KOTOR III was anything like KOTOR II it would be a disappointment anyway.

KOTOR2 wasn't perfect, but that was because it wasn't finished. With the fan-made dialogue patch, it was a lot better. Still, blame the publisher for that one. I liked the intended plot, even if production constraints precluded it from being a truly great game.

On the MMO: Will I be running into PCs named Revn666 talking to BadsszJDI42? Will I be overhearing idiots talking about phat lootz, thus ruining my immersion? Will I see other characters who look like me toting around the same followers? Will I constantly be dodging requests to join raidz and engage in PvP? Will the enemies be designed to present a challenge to raiding parties focusing on DPS as opposed to the single player immersive character experience? Will I have to pay money for the privilege of playing a game I've already payed for? If the answer is yes to any of these questions then this game is not for me.

The following would have to be true for me to buy it:
1) there would have to be an option to make all other players invisible, both visually and textually.
2) I would have to be able to save and load just like a CRPG.
3) There would be no fee on top of the original purchase. At all. Not even for special add-ons and texture packs.
4) The actions of other players would have no effect whatsoever on MY gameworld.
5) In all ways, I would have to feel like i was the only person playing the game, and that the plot was designed for my character alone.

The above is incredibly unlikely to happen. I understand other people like the MMO experience. I don't.

Stuff about hatred of MMOs

Your loss...From how they are describing it, it seems it will be a very story intensive game, with the majority of it being able to play single player.

This is from their FAQ *Alot more info of the game is on the page*

Spoiler:

BioWare wrote:

What is Star Wars™: The Old Republic™?

Star Wars: The Old Republic represents a new approach to online entertainment, featuring immersive storytelling, dynamic combat, and groundbreaking companion characters. The game takes place in the Star Wars™ galaxy approximately three hundred years after the events of Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™.

Can I play alone?

While there are some tasks that cannot be completed without the cooperation of others, the majority of the game can be accomplished by playing alone.

How does Star Wars: The Old Republic differ from other MMO titles?

Star Wars: The Old Republic will be similar to other MMOs but with several key innovations. Traditionally MMOs are built on three pillars; Exploration, Combat, and Progression. We at BioWare and LucasArts believe there is a fourth pillar: Story. Our mission is to create the best story-driven games in the world. We believe that the compelling, interactive storylines in Star Wars: The Old Republic are a significant innovation to MMOs and will offer an entertainment experience unlike any other.

Will I be able to travel to other worlds?

Yes, you will be able to travel to many of the planets featured in the Star Wars movies and in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. There will also be a number of new planets and star systems to explore.

Will I be able to play on the Light or Dark side of the Force?

Yes, during character selection you will align with the Republic or the Sith Empire. In addition, throughout the game you will also be faced with many decisions which can change your path down the Light or Dark side of the Force.

When does Star Wars: The Old Republic take place in relation to the movies?

Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place more than 3,500 years before the rise of Darth Vader. The most powerful Sith Empire in history has emerged from deep space to attack the Republic and its legendary Jedi guardians. After decades of war, a tenuous truce has been established between the Sith Empire and the Republic, but events occurring in the game are leading the galaxy back to an all-out war.

How does Star Wars: The Old Republic relate to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic?

Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place approximately three hundred years after the events of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR). At the conclusion of the Jedi Civil War in KOTOR, Revan disappeared into unknown space in search of a great threat to the Republic, an expanding Sith Empire led by a mysterious Emperor who planned vengeance for his ancient Jedi enemies. Revan never returned from unknown space, but the Sith Empire did, kicking off a war with the Republic that lasted for decades. Now, despite the uneasy truce created by the Treaty of Coruscant, the tension among the divided star systems is threatening to once again tear the galaxy apart.

Will I see any characters from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic?

Given that it is approximately 300 years since the events of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, many of the characters have passed away. However, their legacy does live on as many of their descendants will be part of Star Wars: The Old Republic. Some droids can last a long time as well.

Though I can understand not wanting to pay monthly fees.. some people just can't afford it..

The funny thing is that I can afford it. Comfortably even. I just will never buy into the MMORPG model. I'd pay $100 or even $200 for a game I would never have to buy extras for, but I will never pay a monthly fee for a game. That's just not how I want to game. Sadly, since that seems to be the direction gaming is going, I might have to find a new hobby. Clearly the great RPGs of the past are no longer being made. Maybe I'll learn how to ski. I recommend the millions of lovers of single player RPGs come with me to Vale. Maybe in few years the game companies will miss us and start making games for us. Then we can play games again. Maybe not. Then at least we'll have our new hobbies.

I suppose that this is bad news for Sony Online Entertainment's SWG.

That was a Big surprise for me.. That Lucas Games would put out a Competing MMO for it's own game.

Though the developers of SWG Insist that the new Bioware game will not affect SWG.

Good, SWG jumped the shark ages ago...I stopped playing it 3 or 4 years ago.

Hopefully this title will be the true star wars MMO.

Yeah, that or people who are legitimately unhappy about the fact that TOR is an MMORPG, and that a true KOTOR 3 is unlikely to happen are venting their frustrations in one of the few places where others might understand. It's similar to the less argumentative but more simply saddened anti-4e people on the WoTC boards before the release.

People know what they want in a game (tabletop or computer). When all available information points to a game being one a person doesn't like, he has every good reason to decide he is very unlikely to enjoy that game. I, for instance, don't enjoy the very premise of MMORPGs. I will not like TOR. I don't have to wait for it to be released. There are many others like me. We are writing into the ether to seek out reaffirmation of our unhappiness. We have a right to do so. And in some small way, we hope that BioWare sees just how unhappy they are making a sizable portion of their fanbase.

I saw a lot of people do the same thing during the edition wars. I agreed with them. I don't like the tactical aspect of DnD, and I don't care about balance. I knew I wouldn't like 4e, and so did many others. Many of us (though not all) were right.

Do you really lack a sense of empathy to such an extent that you cannot comprehend that people just enjoy playing games differently from you, that they know what they like, that they need a place to vent, and that they want to be heard? TOR looks to be right up your alley, Dragonmoon. You're excited. You have every right to be happy and post about it. I'm happy for you; really I am. My disappointment is not going to ruin the game for you. Perhaps you could return the favor.

Blah blah blah

You are making huge assumptions here...

I think I saw one person complain about it not being a Single player game..brought up once in a thread that was not even related to that.

If you are going to assume I am complaining about whiners about it being a MMORPG you could at least check before you assume that..

You are way off...And being inappropriate in thinking I lack empathy and pushing your anger of no KotoR towards me where it does not belong.

What I was talking about, which you would know if you had bothered to look before you spoke up, was people complaining about what they want in the MMORPG... Raids, PvP..stuff like that.

Before you attack someone with poor assumptions... think and check your assumption.

Now we know of 3 classes... Jedi, Sith, and Bounty Hunter.. and more still to come!

I hope they make a cross platform version of the game (Xbox 360). I prefer console games to computer games.

as long as they don't reduce the complexity of the UI to be able to work better on a controller, I have no problems with that, But if making the game for a console causes them to reduce the options in UI to better take advantage of a controller I am wholly against the game being made for Console.

Sovereign Court

MMO for a console? Hard to do.

Now, while I still want KoTOR 3 more then anything ever, this does look exceedingly cool. Bioware have never made a bad game, and this looks like no exception, so it'll probably suck my life away.

No release date announced, so I'd bet the absolute earliest we'll see it is late 2010.

This Video has gotten me the most excited about the game of all the videos!

Talks about the immense Voice over in the game for NPC and Your character! And has some good in game video. I have never seen this level for Voice over for a MMO before.

I watched that video last night. Pretty good. Looks almost exactly like KotOR, which is very cool and should give a sense of continuity.

I like the vioce acting and the carry over of a 'Darkside Points' like feature. Though I wonder how flexible it would be. Can a Jedi turn to the Darkside? A Sith be redeemed?

Dang .... I'm a total World of Warcraft fan, but this is going to be hard to resist.

"Hard to resist" being, of course, code for "impossible to resist." ;)

Just found out about this game.

Like Satorian above, I'm not much for playing mmorpgs. For me, it's mostly about scheduling and/or playing with people I might not know. That being said, I might actually make an exception in this case. From what little I've seen so far, storywise this looks to be exactly what I was hoping for in a KotOR III, albeit without such a huge time difference.

What will decide it for me is (1) whether I can successfully complete the game without having to team up with others, and (2) how much a monthly fee would be. They said you can get through most of the game by yourself, but that some things require playing with others. If that includes plot points necessary to complete the game, then I probably won't bother. A monthly fee is not something I'm too worried about, except that if it's some outrageous price then the wife might give me gried over it.

Also, I see that they've set a tentative release date of spring 2011.

My guess is that the initial product would cost anywhere between $30 and $60. Then it would probably be the usual $15 per month.

Yeah, I was talking with my younger brother last night, and he was saying pretty much the same thing. He and I will consider playing the game, and may team-up for some of the quests/missions, or whatever they call them in MMO-land.

The website announced their latest playable class today....

:)

That's gotta be a april 1 joke.

Im not sure about any mmorpgs for me atm. I just quit WoW just before Icecrown Citadel went live after being there from the beginning (multiple 80s, exalted rep-grinding, hard core raiding, running guilds on both sides, etc). It takes so much time to keep you character up to date and on par with everyone else. (I kind of miss it tbh) :) .

I told my former guildies that if I ever returned to mmorpg games it might be Star Trek Online or Star Wars: The Old Republic. This was before Trek was released and I havent really heard much about it since it was released.

All that aside, Im a fan of KotOR and mmorpgs in general, im just not sure I want to devote that kind of time and energy into the mmorpg "life" again. I love the KotOR setting so this will be hard to resist, but the thought of all the time put into all kinds of in-game grinds and potential end-game commitments are whats holding me back from any mmo.

I love it. Especially the video were "the Sarlacc will wait in the sand until its prey approaches, before pouncing in a flurry too fast for human eyes to see."
