As designed by Turin the Mad:

AUGMENTED ANTAGONIST TEMPLATE

"Augmented Antagonist" is an assigned template that can be added to any creature you deem fit as the GM which will be facing a party far in excess of where you are in the campaign arc. An augmented antagonist uses all of the base creature's statistics and special abilities, plus the following:

Size and type: Type does not change, subtype changes to augmented of whatever the critter is to begin with. 'Nuff said.

Modify the ability scores listed for your critter / NPC by +4, +4, +2, +2, +0, +0 as you deem necessary. Adjust all pertinent bonuses, saving throws, attack bonuses, hit points, skill points, etc. as necessitated by the adjusted ability scores (ex).

Hit points per Hit Die are maximized (ex).

Add an attack bonus (as an extraordinary or supernatural ability) for all attacks the critter / NPC is capable of equal to the highest of thier mental ability score bonuses. If none are applicable, add the DEX modifier to the STR modifier for melee attacks, add the DEX modifier twice for ranged attacks. If all else fails, tack on an appropriate attack bonus to bring its best multi-attack sequence to where it can generally hit your party's best normal AC on an 11 or better. Type it appropriately: insight, sacred, profane, luck, morale, enhancement,

Challenge Rating: At best this warrants a +1 increase to the base creature's CR. Award XP accordingly to how much of a kiester-kicking your augmented antagonist actually dishes out to your player characters. Be sure to award any of these that survive full XP for any PC's they frag, according to how easy (or hard) it was for them to kick your PC's rear ends.

The link post also contains a sample creature, the famous "super deathbug".

Enjoy!

Thank you sir, That will help very much :)

Yes, that template works wonders on crappy bosses such as Vanthus in Tides of Dread. Here's what I got from applying that template on Vanthus and I shuffled his feats a bit (he has skill focus bluff wth?), and swapped his level of Aristocrat with another lvl of Tempest (for the much needed two-weapon versatility). I also gave him a potion of protection from good to negate summoned creatures (there's 6 of them already), displacement in order not to get slaughtered against a rogue/dervish and shield of faith just to make him even harder to hit. And I also gave him DR 10/good instead of 10/magic which is pointless at that level, everyone has magic weapons by then.

Don't forget the Deathfog (or what ever I called 'em) variants that are an unpleasant CR 9 variant. Glad you like it!

I'll eventually get to posting "higher end" versions of the baseline Augmented Antagonist template. :)

BTW, I significantly altered Vanthus for my own campaign. Even with the Augmented Antagonist template he simply required too much retooling for the group of characters he was facing down.

Turin I ended up watering your version of Vanthus down a bit and while he did tear up the groups babarian pretty good the Demonwreckers timely use of a Miracle to cast Ghost trap really hosed my Wraiths and Shadow Demons. They went from potent threats to ineffectual speedbumps.

Vanthus was hard to play having to choose from either being an 18th level Sorcerer with the Black Rock or a wily Tempest each round. I even used the Death pact on him but losing the Deathknight template did a number on his AC and saves; -4 Natural AC and -5 deflection and -5 profane bonus to saves from the Unholy Grace. The Rhapsody of Pain certainly saved him a few times with timely save bonuses!!! However a natural 1 against a Hold Monster and he was toast.

Ouch - Nat 1's happen. Glad he gave your group a run for the money though, which is all we really ask of the villains.

Well, ok, the more malicious of us seek high body counts, but that is a tale for another time...
