Going into the first module, should the PCs alreay be pathfinders, or become pathfinder members over the course of the mAdvemture Path.
I don't see it stated either way.

I've only just started as well (three sessions in).
Generally the role of the Pathfinders seems to be poking into ancient things, investigating, recording, and preserving antiquities.
That might make an interesting "hook" for binding all the PCs together for a common cause. Or it might not.
The general stance from the AP seems to be, make the PCs locals and give them some reason to care about what happens in Sandpoint. This can be approached in a variety of ways.
Making them all Pathfinders beats having them all meet in a tavern.
For my players I might have them approached by Pathfinders (and perhaps invited to join) after they have done some more poking into the Thassalonian ruins -- but I really expect to keep them too busy to go off and "play" at other things.

The Pathfinder society isn't directly referenced with regards to the PCs. This is up to each individual GM. If you want them all to be Pathfinders already then go ahead. Alternately you can recruit them during the path, possibly exploiting the connection with Lyrie Akenja.
For myself, my PCs are unsuitable to be Pathfinders so the society won't be playing much of a role in the AP.

I just started as well and I'm making them locals for the most part. it ties them to sand point and gives them a bond. even the Sczarni thief and the cleric of Abadon have an interest in protecting their home. they can then be approached to join the path finders later as their fame grows.
