Burnt Offerings: Help PC under arrest.

Rise of the Runelords

OK this is just a quick plea for help. I am running BO and was just about to send the PC's on the Boar Hunt. Our fighter decided he wanted a boar spear for the hunt and the party rogue and LE member of the Sczarni informed him he could get him one at a cut rate. He then proceeded to break in to the Red Dog smithy to steal one and fell afoul of one of the dogs. Now he has been arrested and is sitting in the goal. this is were we left off and I have until Sat 9/13 to decide what to do.

My only idea is to use our cleric of Abadar as his parole officer and link them with a magic item or curse that forces them to stay near each other. An idea I stole from Belkar and Greenhilt in Order Of the Stick.

Any other great ideas out there?

I think that you should use this as the first step in building the eventual antagonism between the PCs and the Magnimaran justice system. Having the evil PC free on probation, perhaps in light of his heroism during Swallowtail Festival, means that next time he gets caught they can throw the book at him and ship him to Magnimar, where he'll be tried by Justice Ironbriar. It'll be a good way to tie together the first two volumes, though some encounters might take place in a different order than as written.

thanks for the idea I'll look in to it.

If the PCs haven't been asked yet to stick around in Belor Hemlock's absence, you might consider making one of the more good or lawful characters the "interim sheriff" to present a way for them, within the party itself, to release him. Of course, this might make their reputation in the eyes of Deverin and Hemlock lessen a bit, but played correctly I think you could make it work. In any case, a PC breaking the law should have the same consequences as any other character to maintain the illusion of reality, and they aren't high enough level yet to have that much sway to be above the law, so I'd suggest doing something other than just letting him out. Perhaps require community service or a fine?
