Standardizing Racial Starting Hit Points with Hit Dice (with a note on hp inflation)

Combat & Magic

I like the idea of giving starting hit points based on race. There is only one minor nitpick I have with the idea. As it stands now the racial bonuses are 4hp for 'frail' races, 6hp for 'normal' races and 8hp for 'though' races, yet the three types of hit dice have been standardized as d6, d8 and d10. In light of this, I would propose bringin the racial starting hit points in-line with the maximum rolls for these hit dice - effectively the character would then get a maxed out racial hit die at level 1.

Note: I am a bit concerned with hit point inflation in the Pathfinder RPG. Low level characters would benefit from the enhanced survivability of a few more hit points, but at higher levels I am a bit loath to see hit point inflation. As such, I would prefer to see the three poor, standard and good hit dice not be d6, d8 and d10, but d4, d6 and d8 (and racial hit points then to remain at 4, 6 and 8), but I know that is not going to happen and I like standardization, hence my above proposal to change the racial hit points. Hmm, perhaps at least NPC classes could be reduced to these lower hit dice (then it might even make sense to keep racial hp at 4, 6 and 8.

I would like to stay class hp+con mod stay standard. but having the side bar stay is a good ideal

Alright, but how do you think the side-bar should set the racial hit points?

I'm pretty sure the side bar says starting HP, so...
What about 1/2/3 for racial hit points but make it per level? Or every so many level like feats and stat bonuses.

Yes, it does say starting hit points and that's how I also meant my modification.

Well, this is certainly an interesting idea and would make race relevant even at later levels. It would exacerbate the problem of hit point inflation, but if combined with smaller hit dice, it could perhaps work.

I don't mind the 4/6/8 (or even 10/12/20 for Large/Huge/Gargantuan) Starting PCs.

It means that an elf mage has 10 HP before con at 1st level, and 77 HP at 20th. That 4 points almost doubles his first level HP, but is barely 10% of his HP at 20th.

A Dwarf Fighter OTOH, has 18 HP before con, and 123 at 20th. a 3.x fighter 20 has 115, again, not a staggering difference at high levels, but at 1st level it means he won't panic at the sight of a falchion wielding orc.

I have to object to the gnome being considered a frail race. They have a freakin' bonus to Constitution. Like a small Dwarf. That is all.

Personally, we've been using 2xMax of the class + Con at 1st, and it works well. If they do do the racial bonus, Gnomes should not be frail, but instead normal.
