Amargeddon Echo: Who's at war in Celwynvian? Is that a elf city? mixed city? The battle has been a stalemate for "some time" - is that elf time (decades?) or human time (months?)?
Endless Night: Why would the elves ask the PCs to go? Why don't they do it themselves?
Armageddon Echo: Celwynvian is an elven city... more precisely, it's a ruined elven city that was abandoned 10,000 years ago when the elves fled Golarion to escape an apocalyptic event involving a near-end-of-the-world meteor strike on Golarion. The drow and elves have been fighting over the site for many many years (we don't ever nail down an exact number, but the goal is that it should have been going on, at least, for the entire lives of most PCs in a group). A few decades is probably a good number.
Endless Night: Because the PCs are, by this time, higher level than most of the elves. Because the PCs have displayed strength and power and the ability to stand up to the enemy. Because the elves would take too long debating the best way to strike into the Endless Night to get the job done, and sending PCs is a faster, better solution. Because if the elves go then the adventure is short and dull. And because the elves are pretty afraid of confronting the drow in their city...
More details are, of course, given in each of the adventures; the outline is necessarily short, so if you see something that feels too brief, either post here or just assume there's good reasons for it to be like it is.

The Gazetteer states that Celwynvian was one of the Elven capitals before Earthfall, and that during the Age of Darkness it was overrun by drow, with whom the elves have been fighting for control of the city since their return to Goalrion. I get the sense from this and the Varisia gazetteer in PF3 that it is an elf-only city, and that they don't even live in the city proper, as it is unsafe and tainted by the drow.
Endless Night: Why would the elves ask the PCs to go? Why don't they do it themselves?
I'm sure they will explain this in the adventure itself, but there have been no hints as to the elves' motivations that I've seen.
