How many other BESM players are there out there? What were some of your favorite BESM settings?

I have not played it, but I have wanted to give it a shot. I can not get people in my area off the D&D crack to try other games.

[Raises Hand]

A friend of mine (now in another state sadly) crafted a homebrew based out of his own version of Graviton City (super powered high school students), liberally seasoned with just about every other anime reference we could pull in.

Some of the most fun ever had at a gaming table. We laughed so hard sometimes it hurt. Good times... :D

Deep respect for BESM, one of the best game systems out there. Used to run BESM 2nd Edition (Revised) for a while.

I ran two campaigns:

First was a typcal anime style Sword and Sorcery setting based loosely on the "Voyagers of the New Dawn" setting idea in the 2nd Ed rulebook.

The second was set in a dark fantasy parody of Japan. This was my favourite. The battle between good and evil was over (the forces of good had lost) and the PCs were eastern vampires. (Water burned them instead of sunlight which made an interesting twist). On the old idea of fight fire with fire, the PCs had been raised by a powerful sorcerer to fight the demons that had taken over the land, and hopefully bring an end to the age of darkness. Great campaign to run, but never got the chance to finish it. Shame as i had this great plot twist for the end.

I also have the Anime d20, but it does not capture the true versatility of the game (IMHO).

I now have BESM 3rd Edition, which looks to have resolved the few issues with the 2nd Edition version of the rules (suprising a lot of the changes made for the 3rd edition I had already incorporated as house rules in my games). Unfortunalty, working on a major project at the moment, so not had any time to play 3rd Ed as yet. (But looking forward to it).

The Exchange

I like that it expanded the 9 size categories to 17. You can play anything from a speck-sized creature that is no bigger than 4 millimeters, weighing 5 milligrams to a monumental-sized creature that is no smaller than 823 feet tall, weighing 331,000 tons.

Okay - geek moment here (you're free to vomit all you like):

I used the dX Tristat system to create an RPG version for Phantasy Star Online. While the video game had hideously repetitive gameplay, I still love that game. Pure geekdom there.

I think, however, I wasn't the only one amuzed by the science-magic aspect.

Courtfool will appreciate this one, myself and a couple friends did BESM as a HERO System adventure, where we were high school students with the expected soap opera connecting everything. was a blast! have BESM myself, and it also looks fun to play tho my group never got around to picking that one out specifically.

That's just nuts. My personal favorite settings were Centauri Knights, Uresia, and Imago from BESM 3. However I have never been able to get anyone to play it around here either.
P.S. Imago is the greatest. How can you not love a cyberpunk pokemon setting?

So who is going to run a PBP?

Sounds like fun, but I'm not sure if I have the time.

That is a common theme.

Okay, I have decided to go out on a limb and start a BESM PBP, just because the poodle asked so nicely. So what I want to know is who wants to play, which edition do you want to use, I have BESM 2R and BESM 3, and what style and genre of campaign do you want. I've told you what I like but am open to almost any type of setting. Once I have this info I will take the next step.

The Exchange

I'll play any kind of campaign in BESM 3.

I only have BESM 3, so that is my vote as well. Fantasy, Espionage or Supers sounds good. I would also not be opposed to Pirates, Sci Fi or Western. Or are all of those too much of a stretch for Anime?

Dark Archive

I guess I'll have to convert Uresia over to 3rd edition. It's the most fun fantasy setting I've found.

I've only played in homebrewed settings mostly fantasy, but a couple modern, and one cyberpunk.

I made a home brew multiverse setting. The pc's start out as space mercenaries that are crew on a nice sized ship and end up going from place to place "solving" problems for cash (being contracted out by the captain of the ship.) The pc's travel a few planets getting their bearings (so they understand the setting at first, and how to play) but are soon caught up in a rivalry between their mercenary captain and the captain of a few other merc ships that are trolling their part of the Federated Union for contracts. A few conflicts happen planetside, then the pc's ship and a major competitor both get to work on a similar contract.

This sets it up for a few fights with the opposing ship on a harsh garbage planet, a secret lab below the surface, and a dangerous cult that has entrenched itself onto the planet. Later in the game they get shot onto (they could've snuck if they wanted) the opposing merc ship to steal something from the enemy vault and escape the ship in-cognito.

At this point, the pc's are stuck on a midevil fantasy (with some psi/high-tech relics) and are trying to figure out how to get back to the mothership since they lost their shuttle to some officers screwwing something up.

... really wish i had a few more solid players in my game. Twin Cities, MN (northeast part)
