Drizzt and the new FR

4th Edition

Grand Lodge

So... with the FR advancing 100 years into the future, does anyone know whats in store for Salvatores Dark Elf series? I tried checking around the web-tubes, but didn't find anything.

WotC is welcome to advance their FR timeline... but I don't know if I can handle it if they advance the big D's storyline. I mean... if Bruenor lasts another 100 years, I'll be impressed but everyone else is either human or halfling. They'd be long dead, and I don't know if I want to read that.

The impression I got were that there were no exceptions, which saddens me greatly. So if anyone has the dish, please scoop.

Note: This is not an anti-4e/pro-4e thread, PLEASE do not turn it into one.

The Stowaway: Stone of Tymora
Tuesday July 08, 2008
From the author of more than a dozen New York Times best sellers and his son, comes the first installment of a brand-new fantasy trilogy written just for young readers...

Barely a teen and already guarding a secret that could jeopardize his young life, Maimun is marked for death. With the help of a mysterious stranger, the boy escapes his village and flees out to sea, stowing away on the pirate hunting ship, Sea Sprite, where he comes across a most unlikely ally: the dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden. With a half-demon determined to destroy him, and a crew of sailors resentful of the trouble he's caused, Maimun must find the courage to prove his worth, both to his friends and to himself.

Nearly two decades ago, R.A. Salvatore introduced the world to Drizzt D'Urden in a series that has since become a fantasy classic and a consistent presence on best seller lists. Now, for the first time, Salvatore partners with his son Geno to craft a brand-new story just for young readers, featuring a cameo of the most beloved fantasy character of all time.

For young readers seeking the next great fantasy saga or for long-time fans who can't miss any installment in the Drizzt saga, this book delivers all the action, intrigue, and magic you've come to expect from the Salvatore name.

The Pirate King: Transitions, Book II

Drizzt returns to Luskan, and the Realms will never be the same!

The Arcane Brotherhood has long held the city of Luskan in their power, but when corruption eats away at their ranks, Captain Deudermont comes to the rescue of a city that has become a safe haven for the Sword Coast's most dangerous pirates. But rescuing a city from itself may not be as easy as Deudermont thinks, and when Drizzt can't talk him out of it, he'll be forced to help.

Drizzt is back in action again, and bringing more changes to the Forgotten Realms setting. This all new hardcover adventure will keep Drizzt fans guessing the whole way, with edge-of-your-seat action and plot twists that even the most casual reader of the Forgotten Realms novel line can't afford to miss!

Coming October 2008!

Are these two things actually linked or are they completely unrelated in the new timeline?

;-)

Ok, so Deudermonts alive. That's a good sign, right? I haven't read a book with him in it in a while. He wasn't some secret, immortal lich-mage in the disguise of a ship captain, right?

Sorry... feeling paranoid. I desperately need more of Catti-Brie's half-dwarf/half-irish drawl

Those books are still set in the old timeline I think.

The new series is called Transitions and it opens and closes after the Spellplague, from what I understand. So it looks like they're at least preparing to move the Drizzt books into the current FR time, which will mean that many of the characters won't be around anymore.

Which is totally fine by me. How many books can people want to read with the same characters over and over and over again? I really liked Swordmage, and I'm looking forward to a new generation of heroes and such for the Realms.

It looks like Drizzt will still be hanging around though. I suspect that many of the people who like the Drizzt books will be sad to see many of the other characters disappear.

I totally understand, but the old Realms was just soooo overused. It needed this change.

I'm even looking forward to reading the 4E Drizzt novels. I admit, I got bored at Spine of The World. Back then I felt that the Drizzt series should have ended with Passage to Dawn. But Drizzt in 1479 DR, that's interesting....

Yeah FR is a complete mess to begin with. Blowing it up was a good idea. But that's another argument :)

I always felt that the character has always been defined by his companions. If anything bored me it was constantly seeing Drizzt moping off by himself. I really don't want to read a Drizzt story that doesn't have the fully developed character dynamic I'm used to.

As for overused, I think that comes down to the writers. Some books/tv/movie series gets tired and worn out after a single trilogy/season. Others can go on for years. Some even get better/fresher over time.

Obviously we have a difference of opinion, but there's nothing wrong with that. One of us will be happy, one of us will be sad.

Or... it'll suck on its own merit and we *both* get to be miserable....

I mean... this IS the guy who had to put a public apology on his website for killing Chewbacca....

If it's over used, rather than change it, couldn't you just .... not use it?

Yeah, and it was a strange thing to apologize for it because he was told to do it from what I understand.

Ah, at least Chewie died well.

I did stop using it. I've been playing in campaigns set in Eberron for the last couple of years, which is a setting I really like. But now that FR is changing with 4th Edition, I'm very interested. And again, I read Swordmage and I really liked it.

To me, this gives Salvatore a blank canvas to create new and interesting characters. Things can't just stay the same forever, that's just not realistsic anyway.

Yeah, and it was dumb to apologize for it because he was told to do it from what I understand.

Yeah, I know. When he objected to the idea they said "Kill Chewie or you don't get to write the book and we'll have someone else do it. We don't care how you do it, but do it"

So he figured if someone had to do it, it might as well be someone who really cared about the character. I guess he figured if you're gonna go out, you might as well go out holding a planet in each hand....

Heh... he may as well have gone out wrestling Galactus....

While I'm not keen on the new setting, I feel the need to play devils advocate and say "couldn't you just use the old stuff and let the new kids have their new setting?"

I was highly objectionable at first (not flame war level objectionable, but quietly complaining to my computer screen level), and I'm still not interested in post-kaboom FR, but I've simply come to the conclusion that there is more than enough old-skool material out there for me to play with.

In my mind, Azoun is still the IVth, Manshoon is still the bad guy, the Blackstaff is still Khelben Arunson, and it's still only a year or two after the Time of Troubles.

I'm not mad, but sad. I grew into reading when the Crystal Shard was first released, and I insist on being an old fogey who wants to use every new novel to wax nostalgic about a time when I didn't have to worry about deadlines and vendor prices. Without Cattie-brie, Bruenor, and Regis... I simply don't want to read it.

Ce la vie....
