Samurai of the Empire,

Let it be known that The Splendid Emperor will be attending this year's Topaz Championship held annually in the City of Tsuma.

Be brave and strong and register your Clan's attendance. Will you be there?

Shisumo, TerraNova and Arcmagik have all manifested their intention to join. There are five (5) more slots left.

Radavel sorry if I show a measure of ignorance but is this a PBP campaign or just a limited scenario? Thanks.

Dark Archive

No need for apologies, Pat.

Topaz Championship is more of a start-up adventure than a whole campaign.

Just a point of clarification: I am offering to run a L5R PBP here using the classic d10 roll and keep system.

I'm the interested player for both Crane and Lion clan. I can live with either, and probably come up with something for the other clans easily enough once i get my concepts lined up a little straighter than the "hey, an XYZ could be pretty cool, too".

Question regarding the format: Are the characters supposed to be contestants in the Championship? Hanger-ons to them ("I just have to watch out for my sister / cousin / betrothed")? Something else entirely?

Also, are we limited to bushi, or is any kind of character open? I personally must admit to being more partial to Bushi than any other character type, but some people feel lonely without some Kami to talk to. ;)

Dark Archive

I would like to see the players as contestants. It's your time to shine, the eyes of the Empire are upon you and you are there to strut your stuff and gain bragging rights for your Clan. Besides, I don't think you'd have as much fun being on the sidelines.

Further, shugenja characters are not barred from participating. There have been some shugenjas who won the title in the past.

Stealthier characters called N!@#% can also join in. So long as they are no clad all in black and wielding a ninja-to, I suppose.

I'd be interested in Crab or Dragon clans. I used to play the card game all the time and dabbled a little in the role-playing game (unsure what edition but it was early so 1st I think). In reality, I have very little idea of the mechanics right now. I'll see if I can locate my old books. If you think my inexperience will cause too much of a hardship however just let me know and I'll stand aside for others and watch instead (no hard feelings).

Dark Archive

Fortunately, Topaz Championship is meant to be an introductory adventure.

I do not know how different 3rd ed L5R is as against 1st ed L5R but I do recall that ancestor advantages previously available in 1st ed are no longer available in 3rd ed.

I am willing to work with you in the character generation process.

I am partial to monk-types but I have nothing against the Bushi as well... I would probably either go with a Lion Samurai, a Dragon Samurai (monk?!), or a Crane Harrier(sp don't have my book with me).

Dark Archive

You can go Tamori, a shugenja clan that also favors the sword.

Be back tomorrow; gotta sleep now.

Not to spend your money for you, but if you have any interest in the RPG at all, now is the time to buy the core book. (Well, maybe in a few weeks, when the revised edition comes out.) The current iteration of the rules is, at its core, the most mechanically robust, and does a very strong job of handling a number of issues that cropped up in previous versions. The tweaks that make up the "revisions" of the new printing notwithstanding, L5R 3rd Ed is a very solid game system.

I'm not familiar to d10 system so I am out :(

My first idea would be a Matsu bushi who (a bit unusually) studied at the Akodo Dojo. Alternatively, a Doji Cortier could be fun as well, and if the group needs rounding off, I could always drag back the Hida berserker i made for another game. Very good to round off enemies to processed enemy products. ;)

I'm currently leaning toward a Tsuruchi-trained Moshi, in the absence of any mention of the Mantis whatsoever...

Dark Archive

Tsuruchi archer or swordsman?

Little of both. The swordsman path is Rank 2, isn't it?

Dark Archive

You are correct. Rank 2.

Liberty's Edge

The idea was the Tsuruchi Archer school, but with more interest in the sword than most actual Tsuruchi develop. Was actually thinking about some Iai, even.

Four (4) slots still open.

Sovereign Court

I'd be interested in joining. Standard creation rules?

I can play anything. How about a Mirumoto bushi?

Dark Archive

Update: One (1) Slot remaining.

One more player to represent the hardy Unicorn Clan. We start the game this Saturday.

Is there a spot left? I've never played d10 L5r but I have the current core book.

I read the clan war novels way back when.

I think the Unicorn spot is still open. We are just waiting to hear from Radavel at this point. He had a busy week last week.

Well there goes my chance... I have played L5R for years now, and the card game... it would have been nice to get in on this one.. I have all the first ed books, but haven't yet gotten the 3rd ed book, but have played a great campaign with some friends.. if the Unicorn slot still remains I would like to jump in as well, but I understand first come first serve, so if it goes to the other interested party then I'll just keep an eye on this thread.

GM... are you planning on continueing this game after the Topaz championship... ??? If so then possibly I could jump in then if anyone decides to drop out, or can't continue... I should be able to borrow a book to get the character generated in good time...

Even if I can;t get into the game I am still keeping my eye on this one.. it's coming along nicely.. good luck guys...

You can enter as a ronin, assuming the other poster signify his intent to take the Unicorn slot.

Assuming the players survive the tournament, I plan on continuing the game after that.

Adding a Unicorn and a ronin would add spice to the game. I'd welcome additional players.

You are most generous.... I will try to get a book and then I'll work on a Ronin and a Unicorn.. just in case..

For DragonBelow

Spoiler:
Will you be joining us? Please let me know by Friday, August 22, 2008. Thanks.

Scarab Sages

I was looking at the book last night, trying to figure out what kind of character to make, I think a Moto Samurai, but I realized I have a lot of reading to do, for which I have yet to find time for. I would appreciate any help with character creation.

However, I don't want to stall the game, how frequent should our posts be?

Ideally, once per day. But we understand RL gets in the way. Just let us know if you are going on an extended vacation.

Is an Ide Duelist from Emerald Empire Ok?, it makes character creation easier I have a template to base my char on. What an awesome book btw, found an used copy yesterday, I have lots of reading to do

Scarab Sages

I am going to stay out for now, I would to catch up with the game and system before trying to play, I will follow your PBP in the meantime, thanks.
