Overall Plot Hopes & Fears

Second Darkness

Liberty's Edge

First let me say I trust Paizo plenty. They've never done me wrong. Still, back in the day Bruce Cordell also tried to

Spoiler:
? block out the sun
during the old TSR days with a trilogy of modules.

Darkness Gathering, Dawn of the Overmind, and Masters of Eternal Night. Only that time it was the mind flayers. And while I also trusted Mr. Cordell, I couldn't swallow most of the plot without a healthy does of cheese (since I don't do drugs). I ran it for my Forgotten Realms group 2 years back and literally reworked/rewrote nearly 75% of the thing. Then promptly sold them on ebay. Yeesh.

So while I'm trusting Paizo will do this cool and give us reminders of D1, 2, 3 and other underdark classics, my conscious (and players) might squint a bit at the overall plot.

I have no idea why I'm writing this except to mention this isn't the first time in fantasy gaming it's been done, but I trust Paizo to do it gritty and right. Who came up with the concept for this series?

I came up with the majority of the plotline, with a fair amount of help from Erik Mona, Wes Schneider, Jason Bulmahn, James Sutter, and Mike McArtor.

And the goal of the drow is not to blot out the sun...

Spoiler:
...but rather to crush the elves of Kyonin with a meteor strike similar to the one the aboleth called down 10,000 years ago to destroy Azlant. The collateral damage to the rest of the world doesn't really interest them that much, and while the repurcussions for Kyonin if the drow are successful are dire... it probably won't be enough to cause a mass extinction or end the world... unless that's what the GM wants for his game so he can move into a post-apocalyptic genre or something. It's a pretty worldshaking plot, sure, but we've established from day one that this magic exists in Golarion, so it's not an out of the blue development for there to be powerful magic that can call down meteorites to smite foes...

The drow actually don't really have any desire to dwell on the surface at all; they see the Darklands as a better place to live.

I have on occasion been sympathetic with the drow plot.

I'm curious, was this at all inspired by a Jim Butcher book? He did something similar against the Red Vampires in the Dresden books.

Well if that isn't enough right there to give me confidence I don't know what is!

That is a big relief, that we're not going off world or anything. Just hearing that has me itching to get the first book and dive in. Thanks for the info James!

Nope; I haven't read any of the Dresden books (and to my knowledge, none of us at Paizo have...).

It's mostly inspired by Golarion's own history and various sci-fi movies and Queen of the Spiders.

Totally not. However, if you ARE into that, there will be information on what's beyond Golarion in Pathfinder #14.

You really should try them. A very nice Noirish magic tale with richly detailed characters and shifting alliances. Highly, highly, highly recommend. (And as I like Paizo stuff, you know I've got good taste. ;-) )

I find this teaser plot interesting because it seems to contradict the text of teaser for The Armageddon Echo.

I'll just assume that your word trumps the marketing blurb ;)

At one point in the Dresden Files

Spoiler:
One of the Wizards pulls a satellite out of orbit and destroys a lair of red vampires they are at war with. Not identical but there are parallels.

So far the info on the solar system, other planets, and that there's actually stuff going on there has me very stoked to see how you're going to handle that route!

I too look foreward to the solar system info; I like the idea of planetary exploration using old-school fantasy resources. (I wonder how useful endure elements would be on a venus-type planet. maybe they'd have to go for resist energy (fire). and then there's the Air issue.

If you ever do stat up the monsters and ecologies of the more habitable worlds, I really look foreward to that as well.

A few of the other planets will actually have pretty mellow conditions so that if a PC gets there, he CAN explore to his heart's content. That said, there certainly are some where you'll need immunity to fire or cold or poison or whatever to last long...

I was pretty excited to see what this AP was going to offer. Now Im really wanting to check out this sucker! Ever since I read Malhavoc's event book When the Sky Falls Ive loved this idea, and Im glad to see that it was refrenced as well. Will there actually be any open material appearing in the AP or was it more for inspiration?

You forgot your spoiler tags.

Sorry my bad. I didnt really think about it when I was posting, too excited about this one.

Honestly though, while spoiler tags are good and all they require a bit of effort and really if you intend to play in the AP you probably shouldnt be browsing the threads in that AP's section. For example when my old group played Shackled City at the request of are DM did not read the threads in that section until the campaign ended. Most of that stuff is intended for DMs anyway as I see it.

Anyway I'll take spoiler tags under consideration in future posts.

Mostly inspiration. The parts of "When The Sky Falls" that are actually open content are a lot of things that don't really fit into Second Darkness, alas, since the vast majority of the open content there is for stuff AFTER a big cataclysmic event. Since Second Darkness is about preventing such an event, not adventuring in the aftermath*, there's actually not a lot in "When the Sky Falls" we can really use.

*of course...

Spoiler:
... the second adventure does take place after a minor impact event, but since it's a low level adventure, it didn't mesh TOO well with the majority of the stuff in "When the Sky Falls." So we came up with our own meteor monsters!

The way I understood it was that the blocking out the sun would be a side effect of the Drow succeeding, but not their main goal.

And yes, that scene in the Dresden Files was awesome.
