Can a character use the UMD skill to emulate a lower ability score than they actually have? There are spell weaver doors in Demonskar Legacy that require INT 6 to open automatically, but if a player wants to emulate a score of 5 so they can check the door for traps without it opening automatically, how would she try it?

Sorry, Chris, but no. UMD allows you to emulate an ability score when the UMD-user would not otherwise qualify. You don't "qualify" to have a lower Intelligence to have an item that would normally work for you not work for you. Besides, you need to have contact with the item in question . . . and by the time the UMD-er (ostensibly with INT 6 or higher) went to attempt such silliness, the door would already have activated.
