Indrani |

Indrani wakes after her night of talking with the drow woman.
She cleans up and opens the window to feel the morning breeze on her face, before she dresses, once again putting on her veil and hiding her face before heading downstairs. She orders warm bread, which is very different than the bread she grew up with, being spongy with a hard crust, and any kind of spiced meat they have. When she first left the desert, she hated this bland bread, but over time she's gotten used to the bread of the northerners. But she could not get used to porridge, the sloppy, bland breakfast they apparently prefer. Indrani found it revolting, with it's runny but lumpy texture.
She sits at one of the back tables, taking out some of her dried fruits and nuts to complete her breakfast.

The priest nods at the Drow as she comes downstairs and after pleasantries are exchanged he guides her outside whe he removes his helment saying to Dusk "To properly worship The Lord of Light, you must receive the morning rays upon an unmasked and uncovered head at Dawn, when you can, so you can be properly blessed."
He then raises his hands to the morning sun and begins his prayers.
The service lasts some 20 minutes and when he is done he smiles at the dark skinned maiden and moves back into the Inns common room heading to a booth adjoining the one that the Lord of Waterdeep sat in..."Now milady, how can I be of service to you..."
The purple robed wizard with his raven sat at the bar again, keeping an eye on things...as did the drunk with hios head down at the other corner of the bar...
The party sat in the booth or at a table of their choosing breaking the evening fast with whatever they chose...
When Arrenea offered to pay for breakfast, the waitress waved her money away, saying it was on the Lord...pointing toward the all too familiar shape of the golden masked individual.
sorry took so long, been in training away from home the last couple days during the day...and havent had a lot of time to post ;) shall we move things along?

The service over The Priest prepares to depart, and the party all is gathered in the common room...its just past dawn and the trail beckons...
I have been waiting to see if our Drow wished to discuss things with the priest...
The Drow inundates him with questions, after the service. She tries to make a mental note of the ceremony as well.
Accented Common: "Would your fellows allow one such as myself to join you in worship? What is the next step? What must I do to prove myself? I doubt I can memorize a 20 minute ceremony, is there a prayer book I could buy to learn it?"
The Drow is very eager to please, seeing this as her shot, and suddenly realizes how rude she has been.
Accented Common: "My name is hard to pronounce for me in the common tongue, and one I decided to leave behind after pushing myself to the surface, please call me Dusk."
"I'm glad no one else has yet asked what my name is, and I just decided on it last night. I'm still working on a new surname, though I have a few in mind."
"I'm by no means familiar with most surface customs, what do I call you? Is there an honorific name I should observe?"

The Pelorite grinning ear to ear at the eagerness of the Drow maiden answers "Yes of course you would be welcome ...Dusk is it? of course. We haven't had any of your kind in our ranks before, as I am aware of...but that wouldn't stop us from having a first. The next step is to begin to follow the doctrines of the Lord of Light....I have here a prayer book you may take. Follow what is within, praying at each Dawn, High Sun and with the setting Sun. Try to do right by others and finally shirk the darkness within each of our hearts.... These are the basic tenents of the faith.
My daughter, you may call me Lightbringer, Though my surname is Alaric Zolon ...I understand you undertake a daring and dangerous mission for Waterdeep. I wish you blessings on your mission. This is a step in the right direction for you. Follow your heart, for I see in it a goodness wanting to burst free and stay away from the yearnings of selfishness and you will find yourself in Pelors Light soon enough. When you have completed your mission come back to me and I will make certain the Church assists you in your dreams and wishes.
Walk In the Light Dusk!"
The priest leaves shortly thereafter making certain all of Dusks questions are answered and leaves the party to their mission...
unless anyone has something else of import...if so let me know
The group stood on the cobble stone street outside the tavern and shouldered thir packs, walking their mounts, shortly thereafter and began the journey to the city gate and points south....It would be a 3 day ride to the Delimbyr river and the bridge across it...and there would plenty of time to discuss things on the journey...silence reigned over the party during the first bit of the day...broken by the occasional thought...soon enough the gates presented themseleves and the group left the safety of the city for the well travelled road south........

![]() |

Dusk looks absorbed in the prayer book she received from the Pelorite. She didn't even want to waste time hooking up the bit and bridle to her horse so she is just guiding it with her knees.
The horse is almost a polar opposite of the Drow, stark white with pieces of black leather barding studded with steel. It's obvious the light horse is trained for war due to the control it's rider has over it.
Without looking up from her new book...
Accented Common: "If you two need riding lessons I'd gladly help out. I wouldn't want you falling off and hurting yourself before you even get to the fight."
"First lesson, once your back on you horse, is to keep your heel down. Rather than jamming your heels down, let your weight drop into your heels rather than onto the ball of your foot and into the stirrup. You really only want your heel to be slightly below horizontal, not pointing straight down."
"Remember the ideal position is sitting with your ear, shoulder, hip and heel in a perfect vertical line. Forcing your heel down, or letting it float up with most of your weight on the ball of your foot will distort this line. Letting your weight fall down into your heels allows you to stay relaxed and lets your leg sit against your horse more comfortably, effectively and securely."
Dusk seems to have a solid grasp on horse riding if you need more tips.

Vergor Fenstrider |

Before the group takes off, Vergor has them gather all the horses in the stable and casts his Speak with Animals spell. He explains that he is going to be leading them at some points and that he has a snake friend who would help them. He goes through great pains to explain that the snake knows he is not to strike at the horses and that Ol' Pitch will be riding in his backpack frequently. He takes the cottonmouth out of his pack long enough for the horses to catch the serpent. Once they have been acquainted, the druid returns the snake to his pack and mounts up.

Indrani |

Sorry for my absence. I've been on 8 days straight at work and not able to sleep well.
Indrani nods at Dusk's advice to those not used to horses, seeming as comfortable in the saddle as on foot. While her people were not born riding, they did learn to ride before they could even walk to the horses.
She looks to the cat and the halfling, "Stay close to me. Fareedah is used to being close when ridden. I may be able to reach out to help if your horse is startled or unmanagable."

Eremus Vagabond |

Eremus wanders in as the horses are being blessed and Dusk is giving her instructions on riding.
"Oh. Horses." Pursing his lips amusedly, "I'm not much of a rider... mostly used to walking everywhere I go. I can see how getting to the swamps as quickly as possible might be a good thing. Red Eye's life hanging in the balance and all but..."
Looking around and spotting the halfling lass sitting atop the giant horse, Eremus grins at her, "Mind if I share a ride? I'll do the stirrups and you can do the reins."
-----------
As they pass through the gates on the road to Delimbyr, Eremus' mood lightens even further and he seems almost giddy at the thought of travel, telling bawdy jokes and asking each in turn where they are from and how they liked Waterdeep.
"I hope you all don't mind my chatter... just kind of nice to be on the road again." Pulling out a peach and biting into it,"Now...who wants to hear about the handmaidens shift?"

![]() |

The day grows warmer until near high sun the party seeks the shelter of a copse of trees near the road and takes a break from the saddle...throughout the morning the traffic on the road had gotten less and less until it seemed the group was the only ones on the well travelled cobblestone highway.
a respite that cured the hunger in their bellies as well as eased the bodies pains from riding throughout the morning turned once again to travel as the break ended and the party mounted up...now falling into a rythym that can only be found among seasoned travellers...the afternoon sun brought with it warmth and a drowsiness until the band was startled by a shout ahead from a pair of riders sitting lightly upon ghost gray mounts light lances dipped in formal greeting.
"Ho Travellers, what brings you south on the road?...."
The two men wore chain and had various weaponry hanging from saddles or scabbarded. The terrain near road was particulary rocky and had browning grass that was easily thigh high on a tall man. There was a high ridge to the right, seaward side...and to the left a few trees within a good 50 yards. The two men were about the same distance ahead...

![]() |

...a respite that cured the hunger in their bellies as well as eased the bodies pains from riding throughout the morning turned once again to travel as the break ended and the party mounted up...
OOC Point: Dusk did stop to rest but takes no time to stop and eat, instead she finds a rock or tree and buries her nose in the prayer book, grateful she can read 'common'.
Pulling her cloak down a little more to hide the color of her skin out of habit Dusk shakes her head and whispers in Drow "Amateurs."

Vergor Fenstrider |

Vergor waves a hand over his head in greeting and steps out several paces toward the riders and away from the group. The Drow and the cat woman seemed good and the Waterdeep Lord seemed to think them solid additions to the group, but casual travelers on the road might not be so...progressive. Shifting their focus toward him and away from the ladies might be a good choice.
"Hoy-ya, sirs. Ah'm leadin' ah group'a folk down Daggerford-way. Visitin' bidiness assoicates down dat way." he says keeping it simple and mostly true. Easiest lies to expand on...
While walking out, from the group, Vergor listens for any indication of other riders nearby.

![]() |

As the party came to a halt, Vergor guided his mount to the left off the road and repled to the Riders.
Arrenea sat in front of Eremus and looked around glancing to the trees and into the grass, up the slope not seeing anything of note except a hawk lazily circling above. However as she also strained to pick up any noise, She stiffened in the saddle at what she heard.
Spot roll was 21 and Listen roll was 18 Arrenea:
Merle also glanced to and from, alert but if anything was hidden, it was very skilled at hiding, she also noticed nothing new except the same hawk Arrenea saw...
The Rider nods at Vergor and said "Well Come then. I do have some unfortunate news for you though. You have come upon the territory of the Crimson Nail. We require a Toll...a Road Tax if you will, for safe passage. Simply Put, 100 Gold per person, or an equivalent in equipment and you may pass with no danger. Failure to do this of course will not be beneficial."
With that an arrow arced from the trees to the left and planted itself in the road not 10 feet in front of the party.
Please give me an idea how far apart everyone is and where in relation to Vergor who is at the front of the party and off the left of the road...and Ill do a map of sorts for relationship. This is not to say you are stuck with a combat option here...but in case ;) Yes the Hide checks of the potential bad guys were extrememly good...though the move silent wasnt quite as good :D

![]() |

Dusk: Yes, I will make the rolls unless you absolutey want to, but I do need to be told to do so. I always take into account that characters are on the alert...and will give subtle clues that maybe a spot or listen might be useful...but I consider spot and listen more than just passive abilities. Spot is more than just looking around. Its trying to look around with an eye for noticing something not quite right. Listen is more than just hearing noises...its hearing and trying to make sense of them. How many times have you heard someone talking but couldnt repeat more than a word of two of the conversation? Not listening maybe? ;) So yes, you have to tell me. Merle: Yes there is plenty of waist high grass off to the left side of the road...less to the right because of the slope...which is at about a 45 degree angle.

Arennea |

Arennea slides out of her saddle, yelling "Armed riders!", and moves into the brush (Where she should have some cover for her size), using her precognition ability to give her a +1 to attack for 2 minutes, and drawing her bow and arrow as part of her move action. I assume she is psionically focused, as she would do that as her daily routine, or would you like it specified, Dredd?
To Dusk:
You hear Arennea's voice in your head, "Take out the spokesman, now. We are being flanked. Cover the ridge, expect more on the other side."

Merle Barer |

Trying not to draw attention to herself Merle slowly lowers Seph to the ground and telepathicly tells him to go into the grass on the left side to see if he can find out where that arrow came from and how many of them are there.
http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1685747/
Move silently = 21 http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1685749/
She is also going to try and slowly dismount from her horse.

Indrani |

Indrani takes out her spyglass, looking for any sign of the hidden ambush.

![]() |

With the Halflings shout, The spokesman of the Crimson Nail raised a hand in signal...and the sound of horses can be heard by all.
Arrenea thinks she sees movement in the treees to her left....Indranni notices an upraised hand on top the ridge, and the Hawk stops circling and begins to drop...
Please noone take an action until we've heard from those that havent posted or Monday Evening comes..in which case I will decide where they are and what they initially do. I do need initiatives. If you want me to roll them, just dont roll them yourself.

*<150 feet away through grass and rough terrain>*
*<50 feet up road>* party spread out over 50 feet (Horseback) *<150 feet up road is Leader and 1 Lancer>*
*Road is roughly 15 feet wide*
*10 feet from road ground rises to ridge top some 50 feet away*

I hope that helps until I can figure out a diferent way to do maps...since I dont have a scanner.
Because of this, I will always defer to the player if a misunderstanding of positioning occurs. Try to be descriptive in your posts to aide me

Alrighty then, perhaps I should have been more clear in my post calling them amatures then, assuming it was indeed an ambush I would also assume that a spot/listen would have been made. Drow live in a world full of backstabbing schemeing people and never drop their guard, however it's my fault for not RP'ing that better.
I would like a spot and listen as well to identify targets at this point. I make no hostile motions at this time but I will try to use my reputation to give them pause however.
Mind Voice
Dusk mind talk: Your first words to me are to demand me taking a life? How dare you demand me to kill someone in cold blood. They have yet to draw steel and you little one are not in a position to make me do such a thing.
If it's possible for you to feel an emotion via this link you feel pity, as well as severe revulsion for what you just asked me to do.(that was the tone as well, as it seems this power is 'as speech'.) :)
Lowering her cloak and spilling her hair out she looks to the spokesman and asks.
Accented Drow with an amused tone: "One hundred gold to pass by this road you say? I will ask this once, and only once, do you wish to reconsider the error of your ways here and now? Or would you choose to contemplate the mistake your about to make in whatever afterlife is due to you?"
"My companions want me to draw blood from you where you stand, but I consider myself above such bloodshed without provocation."
"Never corner a widow in her web, thats when she is most dangerous, simply leave and no one dies today. Choose poorly and you eyes will be the first to be closed."
I started typing on this post before dread, I just had more revisions apparently. :)
for the DM:
And you can bet your ass I'm "reading an action" to fast dismount (free if I make a ride roll high enough) and tumble while drawing steel(move action) out of possible incoming projectiles, which I will listen and spot for. Tumbling as close to the spokesman as possible is my intent.

Merle is going to take a ready action.
If the two men on the road or anyone comes out of the woods charge at the party she's going to blast them with a melfs acid arrow. Meanwhile Seph is going to continue hiding in the long grass and try and figure out where the arrow shooting bandit/bandits are.
Oh forgot to mention the Adept spells she has prepared for the day are
0'lvl create water, ghost sound, touch of fatigue
1'lvl 1 sleep 1 burning hands
If ive left it to late to mention what spells are prepared (im guessing I should have probably mentioned it before we set out in the morning?)im okay with that as well.

The party had been travelling up the road when the riders had been spotted immediatly Vergor moved forward and when they spoke had edged his horse off the road. The others warily eyed the ridge and trees off to the right as Indranni began fishing into her saddlebag for her spyglass. Dusk knew this was an ambush and scoffed to herself at their ineptness.... At Arrenea's request Eremus had moved closer to the edge of the road.
Within a few heartbeats the request for payment to pass the highwaymen called the Crimson Nail and an arrow came from the trees to stick about 5 feet in front of the Druid in the hard packed dirt of the trail. For Vergor:
As Indranni's searching went to the top of the hill and noticed the upraised hand there, Arrenea dropped off the mount her and Eremus shared and began reaching for her bow she shouted franticly "Armed Riders" and with a glance at the halfling that had the aura of 'how dare you' Dusk began moving forward, lowering her hood.
At that moment barely 15 seconds or so from meeting the two riders, the spokesman raised his hand and immediatly riders began to come out from behind the ridge to the front and back...
Merle paused in the high grass looking to the front of the party mentally preparing to marshall her arcane powers.

No problem. My A/C went out yesterday...in August in Texas :-P So we were driven from the house to the stores for most of the day and then were just too dang hot to do much of anything when we got home. I was afraid it had gotten to me in the line-up and I was holding things up.

Constructive criticism for you as a DM:
I wouldn't say it was a lack of interest, I would say it was your lack of attention to the game that killed it for me.
You made us skip a few RP scenes that should have played out only to fast forward to your big battle you had planned. Not horrible, but in a game type as this the game is fueled by role playing so much more than the slower pace of round by round combat.
I would of enjoyed spending time developing characters and personalities during the night you fast forwarded. You had the right idea there making the PCs bunk up with other PCs, kinda a 'camp' thing where you get to know someone. But you failed to let it develop by skipping it, you fast forwarded the game bypassing a lot of potential information and development.
Personally, I would of enjoyed trying to even role play that battle, but even that you cut off, and stated I didn't even get a few words out of my mouth before combat begins. That rankled the hairs a bit, but I accepted that as something you had planned in your game. (I'll never know at this point however due to the fact you stopped posting about it back on Aug 5th. Did you lose interest yourself after setting up the battle?)
I didn't like having to point out I wished to make a Listen/spot check when appropriate, I found your explanation as to it being more active weak. That to me falls more under a search roll. Spot is supposed to oppose a hide roll if theres a chance I could see someone in ambush. Listen should also oppose a move silently roll when used as well. No one chooses to 'not' listen/spot. Spots primary function is a mechanic to see hidden people/objects and it's a personal feeling that you shouldn't have to specifically state your using your eyes for something like that. [If thats how you planned on using it, how were we to know that ahead of time anyway? I felt my comment made to the effect of calling them amateurs was sufficient, apparently you didn't. No one wants to run into afterthought rules in the middle of combat.]
Then there was the fact you stopped posting anything useful to the game on aug5th. and are just now looking for updates if we are still interested, despite the fact I have been asking this on the OOC thread for awhile now.
I think in the future if you plan on, or have an inkling that there may be such a dramatic delay in your posting to at least give your players a FYI.
You did us all a great disservice by just disappearing and then popping in after the fact to ask whats up.

![]() |

Well Ill shelve this game them...and for the record...4 things...First, you may have been interested in role playing, but pretty much everyone else in the inn stopped posting, thats why I asked if there was something else you guys wanted to do before moving it along....
Second: every game ive EVER played in, if someone wanted to use a skill...they mentioned they were using a skill. Especially in a PBP game where mind readers aren't present.
3rd...Once omre, every game Ive ever played in, when a player takes a hostile action...role playing is done.
A character grabbed a bow and dropped from a saddle, heading for cover...that means negotiations are done. The Bandits weren't going to let you get in position to start shooting.
finally- I was waiting for Eremus to post in the combat, as passing a spellcaster isnt something I do readily...now I did mention I was going to Gencon. Sorry you missed it.
I am sorry that there was a delay, but it was 'life' driven...not lack of interest.
I am not sorry for the way I run my games, I do have a great many players that enjoy my style, so where you might find your criticism's constructive, I do not. I wish you lots of fun in your future games.
Thank you all for at least trying my game on and best wishes to you all.

I'll join in this discussion.
I agree with both of you on certain points. You did say you had Gencon. Last I checked that wasn't a two week engagement. I have a very busy and hectic schedule, with a lagging internet connection that is spotty at best. I'm a single father, working two jobs, taking care of my gran, and going to school. Yet I have continuously checked all of my groups I'm in at least every other day. You stopped posting for YOUR GAME on the fifth, yet made dozens of posts all the way up through the 12th for other, fairly erroneous posts. No one was relying on them to move the conversation forward. I liked this game, Dred. It was good. I agree, you did cut off RPing twice (At the inn the night before, and in combat), and I've known hundreds of times in combat as a DM where combat escalates, or even pauses while RPing happens. Its story driven.
Sorry, but I think the big failure here, and the ONLY one really, is you dropped us. I work in the film industry as a director. If I ever walked away from a project, and claimed I COULDN'T work on a project people had put me in charge of, one I'd started, yet they found me working on other things, my reputation would be done. Period. End of argument. YOU CHOSE to do other posts aside from your game. Big sin, pal.
Now, that aside, I really enjoyed this game, and many of the characters, and was getting into the story. Enough that I would look into another by you. I'm saddened the way this turned out. I hope we all meet again. :) Until then, roll high, in any edition you love.

Fair enough. Lets look at those two comments.
I cut off role playing. Twice. 1st...that night at the Inn- examine the posts...we had pretty well run the gamut.....all that was left was characters discussing things among themselves, which they werent doing. One person posting and noone answering, means I have to move things along. IF I misunderstood that the majority felt like they wanted to move things along...then I do apologize.
2nd- In combat.....Im sorry, to me, once combat occurs, discussion is over. I play the villains just as I would a character...theyre smart. They look for things. When they see someone drop from a horse and grab a bow and head for concealment where does the logic dictate they would wait and continue to talk?....that makes no sense. This one I won't apologize for though.
Now to the statement that I DROPPED you. Would it be fair to say, i felt the same thing?
We have a combat and players stop posting. Lets look at the timeline. I posted Initiative on the 5th and waited for a player to have his character react. Between then and the 12th was 7 days. Maybe I should have posted the Wizards action...and bypassed Eremus, but I really was hoping hed post...and felt a slight delay wouldnt hurt. Yes there were erroneus posts inbetween, but as far as I know that has never hurt anyone... If that 'ruined my reputation' as a DM, then man what a short rope I was given.
Left for Gencon on the morning 4AM to be exact, on the 13th...and drove 10 hours (after working on the 12th I might add)...returned from Gencon on the 18th...arriving back at home around 9PM...yesterday ran a dozen errands after I got up, and looked in today.
Still no posts.
This isnt my first PBP game....nor the first one Ive DM'd. My experience has been that you cut each other slack, because this isnt our lives. this is a distraction from our lives. We play to have fun. Many games bog down from time to time, and pick back up when folks are ready again...especially at times when folks know things are going on, such as the Holidays or Gencon.
But hey, each to his own.
Thank you for at least saying you liked the game. I doubt I will be running a game on these boards though, as I think the expectations don't match mine. I think for PBP, Ill stay where folks are a little more 'friendly' about this sort of stuff.
No matter what edition you love. (nice sideways jab by the way). Good Gaming.
