I have a dream... about Golarion's distant past, and an adventure path....

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

The Exchange

I have been having a recurring dream for several months, since I watched a show about how man has overcome the greater predators in his evolution from slack-jawed wandering groups of cavemen to modern day.
It is an idea for a campaign that would cover about 100 thousand years of development as a species and wander through the different ages (stone, bronze, etc) and technology levels.
My thought is for a 2-3 level adventure in each timeframe that would involve rooting out threats to the survival of mankind and fighting to ensure safety for the tribe/group so they can continue to grow along the evolutionary track.
The classes and races available would be pretty basic at lower levels and open up a bit as the timeline progressed and they all evolved or were changed by the gods and time. Magic would be shamanistic to start and eventually open up to sorcerous magics before taking the step into learned magics like wizardry. All races would evolve from one race(probably humans) with branches like elves and dwarves appearing as enviromental and divine influences changed them.
Basically it would be creating a game world from a different angle and when it was done it would open up into the existing game world and the players would have an intimate knowledge and familiarity with the world, and possibly shape it's present from the past.
I got this idea when thinking about Golarion's past and how to go further back with the Discovery channel show I watched.
Is this a crazy idea or does it have merit?

I've had similar thoughts, at least as far as the world origin goes. Development of the various races, magical learning, etc. I never thought about working it into an adventure path, but that's an interesting idea.

Have you thought about the origin of the deities in this campaign idea? (I forget if there is anything in the Pathfinder materials about this.) When I was thinking similar things, I was envisioning pretty much EVERYTHING was human-originated. That is, deities were all ascended mortals who just learned how to augment their magical power to those levels.

The various races were due to special breeding and magical augmentation, and monsters were created by experiments or accidents; attempts to create better companions, war mounts, beasts of burden, etc. that often yielded unexpected results.

Anyway, I would be interested to see what comes of this. If it turns out not to be compatible with Paizo's vision of Golarion's origins, it could be an interesting campaign world in its own right.

and you are saying modern man is NOT slack-jawed and wandering? :)

I like the idea.

If you have Unearthed Arcana look in the back at alternative campaigns. They have suggestions for games that change times and planes or whatever. That would work well.

For me and deities I have a creation deity who gives command of the multiverse to a demiurge and leaves. The demiurge then creates two twin servants, one good one evil. These two war with one another and eventually the war kills the demiurge. The two servants create more servants, angels, demons, devils, dragons, elementals and titans (other races are later created as well- such as the PC races and such). Dragons and Titans are the only mortal races, though several of their kind steal the power of immortality and eventually they defeat the warring twins. A smattering of mortal races have gained godhood over the ages. It is said the demiurge and the twins will return and recently two new religions have gained power. The first is a dragon cult of two powerful twin dragons- one good and one evil, and the other is a monotheistic religion teaching all others are false.

It would make an interesting high level adventure path to cause the downfall of the Runelords. Even if the party fails, you can always say someone else succeeds because the Runelords did fall in the current time-space continuum. Or maybe the party can fail and go forward in time and see the future with the Runelords still in power (think Darksun). I have to read some comic books to continue this idea further...

EDIT: I have decided this should be the crowning glory of Adventure Paths. 'Fall of the Runelords' an adventure path for 10-30th level play.

That's a great idea in terms of giving an adventure path that can go into high level/epic play.
How about a stand- alone adventure to test the waters first?

Maybe each adventure can have you destroying a Runelord. And it gives Paizo an incentive to fix high level play and create a PfRPG Epic Level Handbook. Synergy sales!

Crazy and having merit are not mutually exclusive, Fakey! I love the idea. I also hope that there are plans for a bit of Chronomancy somewhere down the line. I think that there is looooooooooots of area to play with since the world is still so fresh and new, but Paizo has given Golarion a very rich history loaded with possibilities. I know my background in archaeology probably has a lot to do with my interest, but I think it would be awesome!
