Liberty's Edge

Apparently Stan Winston died yesterday. For those of you (heathens) who don't know who Stan is, he is one of the foremost practical effects creators in the business, picking up from the work Ray Harryhausen did and creating a huge body of work. Stan's designs litter the landscape of sci-fi and fantasy film, including the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park, the Predator, Aliens, and the Terminator. His most recent work was Iron Man and he still has more to come, including James Cameron's "Avatar".

No word on cause of death (although believed to be cancer).

Scarab Sages

I found an article about this on the Sci-fi Channel website.

Death was from cancer.

R.I.P. Stan. I'm sure everyone here knows you and will miss you and your work.

*sniffles*

Aw man. This guy ranks right up there with Harryhausen for me. :(

Scarab Sages

All credit to the man, when a new movie came out, I searched the Trailer Credits (or IMDb) for 2 things:

Who wrote the music?
Did Stan do the FX?

When I was 12, and Jurassic Park came out, he made me believe.

I felt the same way too. That kind of movie magic is priceless.

Thank you, Stan - we will miss you...

Liberty's Edge

There is a very excellent memorial thread at Ain't It Cool News with memories of Stan from his colleagues, family, and friends including James Cameron, Joe Dante, Jon Favreau, and Rick Baker.

Such a shame -he was old school and very talented.

R.I.P.

A legend.
