The World of Aereth by Runfer

Campaign Journals

This Journal is for a group of would be adventurers seeking fame and fortune in the world of Aereth. The group has lost a few members and gained some through out the time they have been together. But rather than me bore you with that, I'll let the players tell you about their characters.

This will also be a place for me as the DM to hand out experience. As well as when items are identified and sold.

Enjoy.

EDIT:

Players: DOn't forget to use IC (In Character) and OOC (Out of Character) when talking about different things.

EDIT 2: Don't forget to include current level and classes when describing your characters.

The small band of fresh adventurers agree to escort a caravan carry silk clothing and other stuff from Stalgard to the great Arvale City.

The quiet caravan was not quiet for long as the caravan was besieged by kobolds. The group was able to follow the raiding kobolds to the abanded catacombs honor the god of peaceful death. The party gained entry and found two people who where being trotured by the kobolds. The party added to their ranks and was able to defeat the kobold leader and regain the strange box the caravan was transporting.

The party arrived in Vaqueria to rest and for the caravan to buy and sell goods. While the half the party rested, the others went to the market, were a fisherman plead with them to recover a magical fish. The party agreed, as did two other people from the crowd (A gnome and large elf). The gnome went down into the well and came out into an decayed bathing house. The rest of the party found the main entrance and traveled there. After walking through nasty water, they managed to find the fish with a old senile woman. The gnome sweep the floor and was rewarded with the fish. When the fish was set free it came back as amermaid and rewarded our party with 10 pearls.

The party had to rest from a filth fever they caught in the bathhouse, and so the other members enjoyed a side show that cam into town (and a murder to follow). The group, along with two new people (a half-orc, and a human) looked into the sideshow and discovered that the man, The Great Gadrian, had murdered the man and had something to do with the missing boy. Before anything could be done the man left town along with his "Creatures".

Before leaving some of the group decided to go their separate ways, leaving only the warmage, barbarian, ninja, rogue, and beguiler to aid the caravan.

The party arrives in Dhavoson, and is quickly escorted to town hall. They are informed that they need to leave quickly and are not to welcome in the town.

That night, Sabian, Aleksander, and Angar eat from food that knocks them out. They awaken chained to the wall and blindfolded. A tremor had released them from the wall and they were able to escape. But without weapons and armor, they were in trouble. They managed to find their equipment, minus gold and gems. And they worked their way out of the Black Larder. They learned that there is another warehouse and they were to be food. They also uncovered two notes.

They learned the Larder was in the cemetery of Dhavoson.

After a long journey, the party makes it to Arvale City, where they decide to set up an adventuring guild, to make money and gain fortune. They also looked into buying a bar to use as a base headquarters.

While trying to think of ways to earn enough for their dream, someone caught their attention. He was in the corner playing a card game known as Three Dragon Ante. He introduced himself to the party as Sirius, and they joined in a couple of hands.

After a few games, Sirius felt that they should move the game to his home (It was going to get loud with the bards singing). So the games continued at his place.

In the middle of the game, Thieves broke into his house and seeked out to kill Sirius. The party of the Barbarian, Ninja, and Rogue was able to subdue the thieves, unfortunately, one of the thieves escaped.

Speaking with Sirius, the party learned that he knew of the attack, and was looking for people to help protect him. The party was not happy. After much discussion, Sirius agreed to hire the party for 2000 gp for the month to help reveal and protect him. He also agreed to let them stay at his place, for this duration.

OOC: members of the party can fill anything they might have to add. I will be adding the next two meetings later this week. The last will include the xp earned.

OOC: The last adventure was really cool. I liked the gruesome details :)

Episode 1: The Eye of the Night (I know this isn’t the first adventure but I thought this would be best.

Angar, Saiben, Alecsander, and the Beguiler are called to Sirius. He explains that a person known as Thistle was important information regarding the attack on himself. He asks the group to go to the Druid village of Fairweather and seek out this Druid. The journey is uneventful. The party reaches Fairweather, on the edge of the Oldarch Forest. The village has been razed to the ground. They find that a fight has taken place, and very few of the villagers are around. One of the members notices that the invaders are wearing the same type of clothing as the thieves who tried to kill Sirius.

They find some tracks that lead to a still standing barn. Ignoring this, they head to the local tavern, were they find a man trying to forget the outbreak that occurred. The man was rambling on about the thieves attacking the village and then rats, or goodness the rats. They swarmed out of the barn followed by a larger rat, and took Thistle back into the barn.

The party determined that they needed to go to the barn. They found more people dead, and a hole leading down into the earth. Following the small tunnel, they discovered a rats nest all around them, and were attacked by many rats, and dire rats. Continuing deeper into the caves, and battling more rats, they come across door. However, a pit stood between them and the door. Trying to cross the pit, a couple of the party fell in, encountering a grey ooze. Instead of attacking they seeked to escape the pit, and with the help of those that stood their ground managed to get out.

Making it around the pit, they reach a chamber with rats just crawling all over the room. Entering, they were ambushed by Blood Whisker ( a wererat) and several Fiendish Dire Rats. Defeating Blood Whisker, they still had the rat swarm to deal with. They realized it was an endless swarm. They also noticed a staff sticking out of the swarm. They found a way to rid themselves of the swarm and found Thistle, the plant creature druid they were looking for.

Back at Thistle’s place, the party learned that he knows were the Llandeyr family (They were the ones that kidnapped some of the members and left them prisoner in the Black Larder). He also has entrusted them with a gem known as the Eye of the Night.

After, wishing them good luck in the future, the party headed back to Arvale City to meet with Sirius to discuss everything.

OOC: This is when you can make comments or ask Sirius questions…

I will post Episode 2 later.

Episode 2: Hangman’s Noose

Having returned from Fairweather, the group came down with filth fever, from the Dire rats. While recovering, Saiben and Angar both had strange dreams. Thinking it was part of the fever, they thought nothing of it. Unbeknownest to them, a young cleric named Sandereos was also having strange visions of a trial.

Having recovered from the fever, Saiben and Angar went about deciphering what Thistle had talked about, and across town, Sandereos was continuing his studies. That night they all went to sleep. When they awoke, they found themselves in a courtroom with 9 other people. The courtroom appeared as though it hadn’t been used in close to 10 years.

After talking with the other nine, the three strangers realized that the other people were the jurors of a trial that took place 10 years ago. A man named Jarbin Mord was found guilty of murdering his wife and kid. The sentence was hanging. The hanging took place 10 years ago. The members of the jury and the party knew they had to get out. They left the courtroom and headed into the main hall. While checking out the hall, Saiben managed to uncover a haunt in the clock and Angar a job out of the way of a chandlier falling, when they heard a scream coming from the courtroom.

Rushing back they discovered Malgrim the hobgoblin dangling from the rafters, hung by his own chain spike. The others said he shouted out, no your dead you can’t be alive, and went to strike at the phantom and ended up killing himself. After the story, the jury decided they had to get out and quickly left through the door…Or did they.

As the party went to inspect the rooms, and quickly learned that Jarbin Mord was wrongfully convicted. Sir Rekkart, a paladin from the jury having stayed behind believed that he would never send an innocent man to his death, continued to believe he did the right thing, even though he had little memory of the event. What proceeded throughout the night was the revenge of Jarbin Mord upon the jury.

Tablark the dwarf upon seeing the shadowy image of Jarbin, went mad trying to pull and claw his eyes out. Halgark, the half-orc, was found trying to stitch his toes back on, when a fungus consumed and killed him. Ebin the gnome was found with his tongue in his hand rocking back and forth on the ground. Madge the Halfling thought she saw her dead dad, and when she went to greet him, he hugged her and then broke her neck. Finally, Patrissa was found stabbing herself in the gut, and pulling out her intestines.

During these gruesome acts, the party learned that indeed, Jarbin Mord was innocent, and they also learned Jarbin seeked closure by killing those who caused his death.

Upon further investigation, they went into the juror chambers, where the jury was sitting there, with the intestines of Patrissa controlling them. A battle ensued. Killian and the Sir Rekkart came to the rescued and helped the party through this battle. Upon defeating the vile undead creatures, they heard a sword fight in the main hall.

This fight was a battle between Judge Trabe and Alastir Wade. The battle was one-sided as Alastir Wade made short work of the judge. Then he turned towards the party and claimed innocence. Too bad one of the members noticed the scar on his cheek and realized he was the one who murdered Jarbin’s wife and child. Battle was quickly engaged, and just as quickly over.

The party then learned that Killian was really Sveth, a long time friend of Jarbin. He explained what must be done and the party hung Alastir, as the shadows or Jarbin, Malene, and Gabe watched on. When done, they spirits went on to rest and calm was brought over the courthouse. When the party left, the courthouse seemed to collapse behind them. The end of the wrongful death over.

OOC: Here is the list of items you recovered, let me know what you sell, identify and keep: 3 Potions, a cigar case, necklace, scroll, bracers, rapier, cloak, and pocketwatch

XP: for Sandereos and Saiben: 1747 xp each
For Anger: 1348 xp

Let me know what you do.
Let me know if you leveled up

"OOC: Here is the list of items you recovered, let me know what you sell, identify and keep: 3 Potions, a cigar case, necklace, scroll, bracers, rapier, cloak, and pocketwatch"

Does our cleric have Detect Magic so he can tell us what's worth looking at in more depth?

OOC: Yes the Cleric can cast detect magic, but does he????

OOC: I think the cleric may be in GA for a few days, isn't he? Can we assume he does?

Angar wrote:

Sure. The potions, rapier, scroll, bracers, cloak glow with magic

The rest seems to be normal

So what are you going to do with the items. It will cost 125 gp per item to identify.

Runfer wrote:

I can't speak for the others, but I am not sure we have the money to have things identified right now.

Any chance the jester's hat (which I retained) was magical also?

Sorry but no. Remember if you wish to sell an item, we can take the cost of identifying it out. THat should give you money then.

Again, it is not for me alone to say. Sabien and I can discuss it later.

OOC: Anybody know when Colin will be able to join us again? I say we plan our next session around that. (unless it's not for weeks) Saiben likes Clerics.

Saiben wrote:

I think he will be out for a couple of weeks. But that is what happens when no one wants to play a cleric. Of course at level 3 the bard will be able to heal.

Episode 3: Death in Freeport

Sirius calls in Angar and Saiben and explains that he has a job for them. He needs them to go to Freeport and locate a man by the name of Lucius. He explains that Lucius might have information regarding the Eye of the Night. Nervous, Angar was worried about Sirius’ safety (and also the money they were going to get paid). Sirius told them to not worry, for while you two were going, others stayed behind to help protect me. Still not convinced, they asked him to place 2,000 gps in the bank of Arvale City to release at the correct time.

The journey was uneventful, and they arrived at Freeport, and quickly introduced to the less desireables of the city, as the Press Gang gave them a greeting and attacked them. Not alone a bard name Benito was also part of the attack. The group quickly overcame the Press Gang, and introductions were in order. At this point, Egil, introduced himself to the group and asked the party to help find Lucius (he didn’t know they were looking for him). They easily agreed.

The first order of business was to check out his house. Searching the house over again and again (the rogue might want to put more points in search). They found a diary and a to do list. The diary talked about strange things that were happening to him, as well as the fact he felt like he lost time.

On the list, was to ask for a meeting Captain Scarbelly of the ship Bloody Vengeance. They went to the ship were they were meet by 2 Orcs, and quickly were told to leave. That night they came back and snuck on board unfortunately, the bard decided other things and battle was quickly joined. The party battle the Orcs on the ship and went up against Captain Scarbelly and Aggro. Angar subdued the captain and asked about Lucius. The captain knew nothing. Where to next????

The next day the party went to the temple to meet with Egil, however, he was not in. So they went to see High Priest Thuron, about Lucius. This meeting was quickly turned down by Milos, a priest of the temple. So they left the temple, were they were ambushed by a some people who thought they were going to deep into the situation. They battle was over quickly. And upon searching the bodies they found an address and a dagger with an “L” etched in it.

Checking out the address, they found a boarded up old tavern. Breaking in, they found there way to the wine storage room, and discovered that one of the barrels with hollow and lead to an underground area.

They journeyed down and into the Temple, were they battled some skeletons until they finally reached the temple, here they came across 3 Temple attendants, and Milos, who looked like a serpent and not human. Battle was joined, while the bard sang. Seeing the battle turn against him, Milos pulled out a scroll of teleportation and vanished. Angar (not being the smartest, charge at the wall).

They found Lucius underneath the altar, tied up. Freeing him and taking him back to the temple, they learned that Milos had sent him to the boarded up Tavern and Milos spoke of an extraplanar entity. Brother Egil is happy to see the safe return of his friend and pays them each 50 gps.

Lucius his also willing to answer any questions the party may have.

Here is what the party found:
560 cps, 10496 sps (which you require a few trips to get all), 615 gps, Magical Staff, Magical Scimitar, Brooch, a dagger with “L’ on it (Lucius asked for that back), a silver ring, 1 potion, 4 onyx gems, and a magical shield.

Xp:
Benito gets 1650 xps
Angar and Saiben get 1566 xps

please post if you level up. and what you take that level in.

Before we began this latest adventure, Sabien and I sold the rapier, bracers, cigar case, pocketwatch, masterwork daggers, and necklace. We split up the potions (2 CMW and 1 Cat's Grace <which we traded for 3 CLW>), and I took ownership of the Cloak of Resistance +1. We also split up the gold we received from the sale of these items.

Colin - you receive 1070 gold, which is how we calculated your share of the booty.

I'll do a Sense Motive on Lucius when he asks for his dagger: I rolled an 8.

Benito will appraise the broach, ring, and gems. His appraise rolls are 11, 18, and 19.

Can anyone equip and use a scimitar?

Can anyone equip and use a staff?

Unless there is dissension (which I doubt), we will pay the identify cost for the potion and the shield.

I have levelled up to a 5th-level badass barbarian.

Not very trusting are you... Lucius sees the dagger and knows it as his. It does have an "L" etched on the edge.

He estimates the price for the following
Brooch: 4 sp
Ring: 5 gp
onyx 60 gps each

I'll wait to hear about identifing the items. Get your boy to get online to post his stuff.

"Not very trusting are you... Lucius sees the dagger and knows it as his. It does have an "L" etched on the edge."

It's just a little Sense Motive check. I believe him...but "what if"...

"Get your boy to get online to post his stuff."

It will be a few days before he has access to a computer again. What "stuff" do you need from him?

Angar wrote:

What his character is doing and if he leveled up. Also in character stuff such as the magical items and monies he may be interested in.

He definitely leveled up. We'll dig him in for a share, just as we did with Colin. Can he use a staff as a bard? Can the cleric use the staff?

Angar wrote:

Benito finds that the spells stored in the staff are unusable by him.

You go to the local magic wares shop and he says it will cost 375 gold to identify these three items. The first is a +1 scimitar, the potion is cure light wounds, and the staff is a staff of defense with 50 charges.

What does the group wish to do with the items?

Angar wrote:

The cleric would be able to sue certain spells from the staff

Ok guys I need two things posted before Friday, or I'll make my own assumptations.

1. Where is the Eye of the Night? and do you keep it with you at all times?

2. Since Dustin can't make it, what is the bard doing during this time?

I am carrying the Eye of Night since it seemed safer in my care than in allowing Sirius to have it. We did not want rumors to get out that it was at his house while we were away.

I would prefer it were somewhere safer. It seems to be of value to Sirius and we have had all our belongings stolen before.

Any suggestions? Does the bank have safe deposit boxes?

Runfer wrote:

We'll hold on to the staff until we meet the cleric again to see if it is of use to him.

Runfer wrote:
a +1 scimitar

Does anyone have a use for this? How much could we get for it if we sold it?

Since you are currently in Freeport, you really don't have a bank to put it in. However, there are safes in the rooms you are staying at.

The +1 Scimitar is can be sold for 1155 gp.

IC: Alecsander (sp) shows up while rest of you are resting. You relate your story to him. He then hands you a letter from Sirius

Saiben and Angar,

I hope your travels were ok and you have not found yourselves in too much trouble. The rogues that tried to kill him have made their way to Freeport. Through some research, he has also learned that there is a connection between them and the and a group known as the "Yellow Shield". THere must be a relationship between them. Please keep up your investigation. As a result of these discoveries, I believe you are close to finding the culprit. I am releasing you from your contract and attached is a voucher for the money I have promised you. Thank you for all your efforts, and I hope that we can work more in the future.
Sirius

OOC: OK guys what do you want to do?

We now have enough money to start a guild, if we'd like. That was our original intention. Having a guild would give us access to training facilities and libraries, provide contacts, etc.

At the same time, there is something to be said to simply hiring ourselves out as soldiers-for-hire. My years of living on the land have given me something of a wanderlust, and I find great excitement in travelling and testing the heft of my waraxe.

Of course, we could put this money in the bank and save until we had enough to purchase our own tavern in the Thieves Guild; I think we can find something for between 10,000 and 20,000 gold pieces.

I am open to what the others think...other options...

I could use the scimitar, we can sell my +1 rapier.

I don't remember the specifics of starting a guild, but if we have enough gold to do it now and there is not further cost later to keep it going, it might be money well spent. The benefits of having a guild probably outweigh the benefits of having a tavern (although having our own tavern would be seriously cool).

Saiben wrote:

Is a +1 scimitar better in some way to a +1 rapier?

The only difference between the two is that the rapier is piercing and the scimitar is slashing. They do the same damage.

The rapier has a greater threat range; it's probably better to keep the rapier.

O.O.C.
So this my first post as Benito "The Brilliant" (cue a soft melody on my lute). This should be interesting.

I.C.
In the morn' I have received a letter from my father. He tells me my mother is dying and that I should see to it that I spend one more day with her, by her side. He tells me to play for her one last time before she goes to be with Pelor again. So that is what I am doing. I shall see you all again in the near future, you won't really need me. You haven't thus far. I shall now sing you an inspiring song to bring happiness and courage for all your days.

"Four mighty warriors fight together,
Building a name for themselves.
Along side sings a bard.
He shines with good looks and charm.
Angar is strong and firey in his technique
Sabien is quick with his fingers and fast with his sword
And we all combine to create a fearless adventuring squad.
So all those who see us as their enemies,
BEWARE!
We don't hold back, we don't stand around
We fight for what's right and we die for what's justice!
And with that we ride into the sunset."

And WITH that, I set for the ride back to my family.

I shall sing for you all again soon.

O.O.C.
I'll level up my Bard after I actually level him up.

A BIT OF RETRO, if you please.

My name is Angar, and I come from a village you have never heard of because it was destroyed when I was a young lad. My mother saved me - me alone of all my brothers and sisters - by pushing me into a corn crib when the orcish raiders began the destructive invasion of my village. I watched with horror as I saw my mother slain, my brothers slain, my sisters led off in chains to sate the appetites of their new masters. Or so I envision.

My father was a warrior, and he taught me to fight when I was young. He never returned after my village was scoured. It is my belief that the orcs slew my father's band of warriors as they were returning to us and in so doing found our village. Again, I do not know this for certain.

All I know is that I lay in that corn crib long after the orcs finished their destruction, waiting for someone to discover me, and that no one ever came. All I know is that I emerged from my hiding place to find buzzards already picking at the remains of my friends and family. I ran from the village then, screaming curses I had heard from uncles use, and ended up sleeping in the wilderness that night. And the next night. And the next. I tried to return to civilization once or twice, but I could not bear the closeness of others. It was safer for me to live in the wilderness as a barbarian.

Until recently, that is. I lived alone for almost 30 years by my reckoning, and then something began to draw me to crave the company of others. I joined a travelling band and hired on as a bodyguard, and there I met several others who have proved true friends. I remain in their company.

Although I was satisfied to survive as a barbarian for so many years, I have found myself feeling less barbaric and more like a warrior (as my father was) since joining these fine men. Although I still find myself occasionally becoming enraged as I enter battle, more often I find myself planning strategies the way a true fighter does. Instead of avoiding strangers, I find myself actually engaging in conversation with them and sometimes even swaying them with my words.

I will deny this if anyone asks, but I have never been happier than I am right now.

What this all means, of course, is that Angar is no longer a 5th-level barbarian. He is now a level-2 barbarian, level-3 fighter.

It seems to me he would have been a barbarian when he joined up and fought his first several fights as a barbarian but that he would have started to develop fighter traits as he continued to battle alongside others.

You and your boy rock with the last to stories I read.

Another night awakened by nightmares. I am unaccustomed to such dreams; only since coming to Freeport have my night stirrings taken on such disturbing images. This night, I roam the streets and follow drunken revellers into an alley. They scream in terror when they see me. Then the dream flashes and I find myself licking blood from my hands...but my hands are claws.

I have never put muich stock in dream interpretation, but these dreams haunt me even in my waking hours. If this is what it means to dwell in a city, then I shall surely return to my wilderness home and happiness very soon indeed.

Bah.....an island of rapine buckaneers, controlled only by their access to rye and flesh and the guileless graspings of the "Sea Lords"?!?!

This is the beautiful asymmetry of lawlessness unanchored from the moorings of basic decency and goodness, at once hugely attractive, yet simultaneously repugnant in the extreme.

So why did we come here?

To hear the ravings of some poor sodding scholar by the name of Lucius?

Bah, I say.

I'd rather be locked in a room of paladins than suffer the din and stench of festering dung and despair just to interrogate some sodding librarian who claims to have been witness to things best left unseen by mortal man.

Bah.

And so I train in the streets, and in the taverns....pummeling those who haven't visited the wisdom of Kord, and helping them to come to grips with the lessons of the Brawler....certainly he has much to teach in this ungodly place.

Much as I appreciate the shares of treasure from our harrowing adventure in the haunted and spacially interdicted court-house, I sometimes question the wisdom of travelling with this lot of "adventurers".

And what's this I hear from my new and occasional compatriots, but tales of half-serpents and undead?

Hmmmm.

These latest events, and the whispered rumours I have been hearing about serpent men and hidden cults call to me, and set fire to the tinder of my ire. For oft' have theocratic heresies of all branches sought to suppress the common people under the thumb of some dictatorship (with their bloody paladins as enforcers, no doubt) and so I sense that there is some hidden threat to liberty and the freedom enjoyed by the men and women of the street that must be vanquished!

I shall enjoy bringing the crushing grip of the Brawling Lord to those who endeavour to keep down the freedom of the people!!

And so, I throw off the meditative (yet soporific) chants of Kords mantras and the sweaty, grasping dances I hold with the supplicants and curious passers-by outside the temple, and gird my loins for genuine combat!!

Hail Kord!!

Hail glorious freedom!!!!!!!

I find myself in another unfamiliar city, this time with a new group of companions. I'm usually not one to align myself with wandering adventurers, but I seem to be comfortable here. I've found people I seem to work well with. If I can resist my urges to take things on alone, working as a group might be a welcome change. I've been with one or two of them for some time now, and it's a new experience for me to feel that my contributions are regarded highly. To my surprise, I rather like working toward a common goal instead of the usual hand-to-mouth life that I'm used to. And now, as new people join our band, I again surprise myself by welcoming them and appreciating the additon of their skills and talents. For too long I have avoided the companionship of others. This is a good change.

I do, however, continue to have desires that I fear will be a detriment. A fat purse dangling from the belt of an unsuspecting fop is almost too much to resist. How many times have I given in to my greed, only to find myself fleeing a city with soldiers on my heels? The profit from this new adventuring group is quite promising, and that will go a long way toward satisfying my lust for coin. Soon perhaps the purse on my belt will be as fat as those I covet. Still, the young braggard in the corner with the sparkling sword and mail that have obviously never seen action is such a ripe target, I might have to take a stroll across the taproom and relieve him of his belt pouch...

Be ready to play it out tomorrow. Angar and I should be there early, the workshop is at Spoto which is about 3 miles from your house.

As my mother said her final words (which were, "Will you keep that racket down!") I was able to tell my father that I have found friends that which I am planning on getting together again with to go out and adventure once again!

O.O.C.

Alright...I'll be able to come play on the 25th of this month. Tabor, set that up!

"The morning my mother passed away,
The tears fell down my cheeks.
But I got on my feet again,
To go out and adventure again.
So, beasts and burdens,
Let me tell you here.
Benito The Brilliant is on his way
So watch your back and your front."

That was a melody that I created. I hope Angar and Saiben enjoyed it.

Peace be with you all.
