A point of interpretation came up at our last gaming session related to my cleric's ability to use Healing Word. It is described as an Encounter Power, but is it limited to combat situations? Say we're out walking through the forest and one of my guild falls in a pit, taking damage. We pull him out. Can I whisper a prayer to hasten his healing? What about right at the end of combat? We defeat that last of the kobolds (or whatever) - can I as my next action, even thought combat proper has ended, whisper my prayer to help an ally heal? This just seems like one of those abilities clerics should be able to use whenever they want. It's not contingent on making a successful dice roll (such as to hit and enemy), just on a whispered prayer. Anyone have any answers to this dilemma?
What this all means, of course, is that Angar is no longer a 5th-level barbarian. He is now a level-2 barbarian, level-3 fighter. It seems to me he would have been a barbarian when he joined up and fought his first several fights as a barbarian but that he would have started to develop fighter traits as he continued to battle alongside others.

The rapier has a greater threat range; it's probably better to keep the rapier.
Taralilia was excited to be back in the big city. Big cities mean people - endlessly fascinating people! - and big cities mean taverns - great places for music and laughter! - and big cities mean Three-Dragon Ante. Three-Dragon Ante was a game at which Taralilia excelled, and she never failed to win big whenever she played. As soon as they came to town, she found a few others who seemed interested in taking advantage of such a bright-eyes youngster, and they set in to a game. One of the best things about taverns was the excessive gossip all around, all the wonderful stories told and retold, getting bigger and better with every retelling. She enjoyed telling stories as well, and her bardish skills tended to make her the focus of other's attentions. Little surprise, then, that within a few hours she discovered that someone was searching for her. At first she was irked. Was it her parents, expecting her to return to the home she had left less than a year ago? Was it Old Man Venebulus, her spouse-by-arrangement, who wanted to get her wedded and bedded? Was it at least someone interesting who wanted to kill her for a little while? In fact, word had been put out in several of the larger cities and trickled down to smaller villages as well. Quintius and Hephzibah - her bandmates! - wanted to stage a reunion. They had set off as a duet several weeks ago when Taralilia decided she should get first billing - she as the bardess, after all; anyone could beat percussion or scream lyrics - and apparently had discovered they wanted her back. That sounded pretty cool to Taralilia, so she sent word of where she was (which should get out to the others even though the city is on lockdown) and set in to play some high-stakes Three-Dragon Ante. Only once did she think it was unusual that Penelo didn't seek her out, but she had a Color Flight to worry about. If Penelo wanted her, she knew where she was. Ante Up!
Jee-Na had 526 gold at the time of her demise; that amount should go to the party fund. I know it was costly to raise her from the dead, and she is ready to go again. She still has her crossbow bolts and she did not use any of her potions on the last adventure (ahem!), so she needs nothing. She is frankly very happy to be alive again. You may notice her being quieter than usual; she has a lot on her mind.
Just in case Jee-Na's rambling was unclear, she is ready to level up. Do we have time and gold to do so? I'll be bringing in a half-orc barabarian, and I'll introduce him by having Jee-Na pick him up in town if that's all right. Colin, can I make the barbarian's greataxe masterwork or even magical? If he's starting at 4th level then he's been in a fracas here and there and might have acquired such a thing. I don't know the process for such things. And fracas is such a cool word that I may just make that his name. Fracas the Bloodthirsty! Frack with the Soultear Attack!
OOG: I apologize for using the term "gay" in a pejorative sense; it was not even really used as a comment on Akathis's sexual orientation - as you said, Colin - but just as a goading comment to rile Akarthis. It seemed to fit the moment. Nevertheless, there were no anti-homosexual intentions behind its use (and my opinion has always been that I am not concerned about other people's sexual orientations unless I myself want to sleep with them) and I very much apologize for any offense the term's utterance may have caused.
Jee-Na and Aerie Moonshadow have no further business in Beetu. The shopkeeper implied at the time of the original "transaction" that he might call for "payment" at a later date, but this conversation seems to indicate that all such business is finalized. He is apparently a very sweet man, and Jee-Na thanks him for his kindness without vamping it up at all. Jee-Na: "I will recommend your shop to my friends and other adventurers I find."
I think I gave that wand to Akarthis in exchange for his Ring of Protection. I just want to pay off that shopkeeper so I don't have an outstanding debt. 13garth13 wrote:

The trio of cautious adventurers ventured to the north..." ???I don't recall warnings...why don't I remember that? Was there a forget spell placed on me? We should have checked out that basement! --Jee-Na
You have not fought against these fungoid creatures, Tas. They're devastating. I can't explain why I was so certain we should go there, but I advise caution. Runfer wrote:
If everyone is agreeable, Jee-Na will equip the morningstar (1d6 acid damage? SWEET!) and the chain shirt. It is my understanding that she will not need to alter the chain shirt, that all clothes pretty much fit everyone - is this so, or do I need to find a tailor? I understand I have an armor check penalty of -2 in the aforementioned areas. On the other hand, my AC just went from 15 to 17! Also, rogues have simple weapon proficiency, so handling a morningstar is no problem, right? I'm selling the rapier, and adding Weapon Focus (Morningstar) as my new feat. Check me on this: my base attack bonus is +3, I get an additional +1 for my strength bonus, +1 for my weapons focus, and +1 because it is a magical morningstar - so my attack bonus is +6. Right? Or (advise the new guy here), should I take weapon focus for my Master Crossbow, thereby giving me a +7 for that weapon (but only a +5 for the morningstar)?
Jee-Na: I believe I would benefit from additional training as we recuperate from our losses. I want to be as skilled as possible for our excursion to the north to visit Squire's brother. I will let Ina'ceer and Akarthis divide the gold as I train. I'm sure they'll deal squarely with me. How can I get this training?
OK, groovy. I was pretty sick yesterday and was worried my tone might have been abrupt and rude (it is so hard to convey tone in this kind of writing). I have asked Colin to just back us up to Friday afternoon when I first posted the list...wich Mike has updated. No one has equipped or claimed anything from the loot or the dead, so what do we do now? Sell everything that doesn't need to be identified, right? Can Jee-Na equip Thorakk's chain mail shirt and the magic morningstar?
I think everyone thinks I'm being disagreeable. I'm not trying to, not at all: I just didn't understand how the loot divvying was supposed to be handled. It's because I am a new player, but I'm not trying to cause a ruckus. I'm sincere when I say I am content to follow Mike and Aaron's lead. 13garth13 wrote:
Repeating from before...
Dear DM: We need to rewind everything to Friday, when I posted all of the booty we looted from Squire and his henchlizards. Holy Symbol (Zuggmoid)
I will let Ina'ceer and Akarthis take care of how to do things and what to do. They know what they're doing better than I. Jee-na is interested in equipping Thorakk's chain mail shirt and the magic morningstar, and she is interested in the magic ring as well. I don't know if the ring would benefit her, so it may be that Akarthis or Ina'ceer might make better use of it...or it might be better off to sell it. Whatever they decide.
I wrote about them on Friday at 3:40:

Also, from the lizard fungoids, we took two sets of extra-fine chain mail. I wish we had thought to pillage the mansion's furnishings - Being new to the game, however, I have to ask: how would we have carried these things? Do we have a cart of some sort, or is it just a sort of meta-gamed assumption that we can carry things with us just because we said we could? It appears Jee-Na can equip a morningstar, so I would like to sell my rapier for that if evceryone agrees that's a good idea. If one of the rings will help, I'd be happy to add a ring...but we don't yet know what they do." No one said anything about it, so I assumed it was okay. I also asked if Ina'ceer or Akathis saw anything they could equip or use before we sold it. Did I err? Morpheus wrote:
OOG: I was speaking in character as I debated the way we would split up the loot and money. It seemed to me Jee-Na would want as much profit as she could have. No big deal, though: I would appreciate some clever mathematician letting me know how much gold I should add to my stores. I took not only the chain shirt but also the magical morningstar and a magic ring. I did sell my masterwork rapier and leather armor, though. Wait: is the magical mporningstar a better weapon that masterwork rapier? If not, I'll keep the rapier. Or ought I keep both? Advise me!
Jee-Na: I will take the chain mail shirt. If you wish to have the value of this reduced from my money, that is fine. However, it seems our practice has been to divvy up the loot as appropriate and then sell what remained, thereby separating the money in that manner. However, I will let the decision for that rest with you, Ina'ceer, and you, Akarthis. At present, I have other matters to which I am attending.
Jee-Na: Is it possible that I might wear Thorakk's chain mail shirt instead of our selling it? It might be a bit big for me, but I can make the necessary adjustments for it to fit. Ina'ceer and Akarthis, are you certain you cannot use any of the items? If not, we can sell it all, but be sure before we commit.
Nielandyr, Tas, and Aerie Moonshadow have already met one another and are interested in joining another party. Each has his own reason for joining, but all are committed. Overhearing questions during Jee-Na's Gather Information, they approach her and her companions to discuss the possibility of their joining forces. Jee-Na and her companions know they need others to help them on their adventuring and are delighted to welcome a knight, a half-elf monk, and a halfling cleric. So now we are again a party of six, and it seems they can all engage in conversation. Aerie Moonshadow, by the way, is incensed that Jee-Na refuses to divulge her real name. He doesn't much care for her; she seems a bit immoral for his tastes. Nevertheless, he is not judging her...he is just a bit on edge around her.
Jee-Na rolled a 15 (11 plus 4) for her Gather Informaiton.
She's willing to lightly grease a few palms here and there, using her sex appeal with the men (using an 18 for Bluff) to make them more willing to tell her what she wants to know.
Ryk: The items we took from Squire's house include the following: Holy Symbol (Zuggmoid)

Jee-Na: It is certain then that we three shall return to Callistor, transporting in some safe fashion the items we removed from the mansion before its destruction (and the loss of our companions). We will want to look again at the items to determine what to keep and what to sell. Training, as you said, is a good idea, and I wonder also if we might find others to join our party. Three of us is too few for the dangers we have faced, and we have lost our healer as well as our muscle. I want to discover what this wand may be used for, and am sorely tempted to start aiming it at things and yelling "Abracadabra!" I do not want to rest too long in Callistor. I feel drawn to travel to the northlands, to see Squire's brother.
An thou callest me by other than my name, mayhap I shall respondeth not. An thou honorest me with my true appellation, then verily will I cherish thee. Yon knight distresseth me not, for a stout warrior of his ken is most welcome as we face the perils to come. Heironeous grant him the strength to hold true in his quest. We three, Tassleleaf Bungleherd, are a scant force. Mayhap we shouldst seek others who also seek to restore rightness to this valley of Nyrond. I must meditate, for the days to come be filled with challenges unforeseable and dire. Praise Ehnolla, goddess of the woodlands.
