This book is the scariest book I have ever read.
The section in Chapter 11 called "Incident at Guangdong Providence", has Call of Cthulhu adventure written all over it!
I love this book! Did anyone read the sequel? It didn't get great reviews...

You know he wrote a sequel a couple of years ago, I can't remeber the title off hand though.
the sequel is called 'Deeper'.
The Descent is a fantastic read, and although I was also hesitant to pick up the sequel after reading some of the reviews, it was pretty good, too. Not as good as the original, in large part because the novelty of the concept was not there, but still pretty good. Mostly, I enjoyed it because it was a return visit with some interesting characters, and I wouldn't dissuade anyone from giving it a go.

Deeper comes out in paperback on Aug 26 (or something).
The first chapter was by far the best part of the book. Parts were good, parts were blah, and the shroud chapter was just stupid and unnecessary. And, uh, the section about that poor kid in Nebraska...I think Jeff Long has some issues which should be addressed.
That said, I wish more had been said about Osprey and his butterflies...
All in all, a fantastic read - especially if you want some inspiration for a Darklands adventure!

The first chapter of "The Descent" is one of the most incredible and horrifying and awesome novel openings I've ever read. The rest of the book's great too, but wow does it start with a bang. In fact, I've read a lot of Jeff Long's other stories, and ALL of them I've read so far (particularly "Year Zero") are good stuff. And while I do agree that the end of "The Descent" is kind of anticlimactic, the sequel does do some really cool stuff with it.
As for that sequel, "Deeper," it's quite good. It's very different from "The Descent," in that it doesn't feel nearly as epic. It also doesn't feel "new" since we're dealing with known quantities. But it does expand the underworld in some pretty nifty ways (there are more than hadals down there, in other words).
And of course... both of the books are great sources of inspiration for D&D.

Is this from the movie, The Descent, where the group of women go spelunking and discover......stuff(don't wanna ruin it)? or is this another Descent? If so can I get a quick overview sans spoilers?
They are different entities with very similar points - caves, people dying, that kind of stuff.
Descent 2 began filming in May: woo-hoo!!!

It's an amazing, disturbing, claustrophobic book. The sequel 'Deeper' is good as well and Jeff Long says he intends there to eventually be a third.
