Figured this belonged here rather than the 4e boards
My FLGS was mocking me yesterday for not buying 4e. "Oh, you're one of the angry ones" "Oh, you're still in denial." "You'll come around."
Finally, the owner said "Come on, Matt, Admit it, you'll buy the 4e books."
My friend and rommmate then said calmly, "From Amazon, maybe." She's an old magic player who didn't start with D&D until 3.x.
The silence in the store was priceless.
Edit: Don't get me wrong, the Guardtower are good people and the ribbing was in good nature, it was just funny the silence and looks she got.

Your LGS is at least more on the ball than ours. I walked in to see multiple copies of every 3.5 suplment in existence. When I asked the guy if he was worried about the conversion to 4E, his response was: "4 What?" He had never heard of 4E. This was about a month ago. I guess it's part of why we drive half an hour to go to a game store in another town, as opposed to dealing with the local one who is clueless.

Well they had a 50% off special on 3.x WOTC books. I was hoping for a sale on all their OGL stuff, but couldn't be so lucky.

It's also a good reason to post on these forums.

These are honestly the only arguments that completely and utterly raise my cackles and blood pressure. I've got it from a few people locally (and of course many, many places online). I will probably pick the books up someday, used more than likely. But to assume that I'll switch because it's the new popular thing makes me angry, there's a lot of other games out there I'd rather go get, and I do have another option (many in truth) aside from 4th edition.
Oh well, that is pretty funny. Kind of a kick to the groin to the owner.
:)

Is this the one in downtown Eugene? I gave up on that one pretty quickly too - I don't even remember the name of it anymore.

Awesome. Did you get a snapshot of the guy's face?

A shop after me own heart.

Agreed. Arrogant, pretentious idiots, too dumb to think their own thoughts, and thinking everyone else must join the collective.

Modesto, California actually.

IMHO it just looks like the shop owner has taken a class in WotC maketing. Piss off the customer and then expect them to buy stuff from you.

On Friday I picked up the 4E gift set from my LGS. I had a damn good look at all of it over that day, then decided it doesn’t suit me. So on Saturday I phoned the shop owner and asked if he’d refund it. He said yes, as long as it was still in perfect condition, because he was beginning to run out of the sets.
So, I took the gift set in, and chatted with him about it. He did give me the refund, thankfully (I’ve spent enough there in the past decade!); I only wish I hadn’t spent a total of 6 hours and £13 on transportation buying the thing in the first place.
Anyway. Somebody else bought the set, and while handling the transaction, said in a raised voice while looking at me: “A wise choice, sir!”, as though trying to make a point.
Later on, he said that “I’d be back in a year to get the books.”
When he did say that I thought of this thread, but thought better of mentioning Amazon! Even so, I won’t be back in a year.
Shortly after that, he said that people who game do three things:
1. Talk in the shop
2. Actually play the games
3. Buy the books to read them if they’re not actually gaming.
(It seems he also forgot about writing your owning gaming material/homebrew/whatever, and interacting on websites like this!)
Anyway, he said that: “If some one isn’t playing a game, then buying new books makes them happy. If they’re not buying books, and not playing in a game, then they don’t really have a hobby, and must be sad people with their collection of books they’re not using.”
Frankly, I lost all respect for the guy at that point.

Felt I should clarify something, in defense of my FLGS.
It was good natured ribbing. It was just that donna's reply left them completely flat footed. (or gave her combat advantage if you prefer)
They've not marked down their other d20 stuff, (sigh) and are good people. Even if they're on the 4.x bandwagon. Heck, they even pack KQ.

Huh. For some reason I had you mixed up with fellow Eugenian Russ Taylor. Bizarre...

My funny new grognard experience:
Store clerk: "Just to let you know, Fourth Edition is comming..."
Pax: waiving his hand evenly "No, I don't touch the stuff!"
The funny new grognard part is the fact that this just popped out of my mouth, as though someone were offering me some moonshine and I'd recently come to grips with rejecting a drink after battling alcohol addiction.
Yes. Its true. I've aged. And in a humorous way, this was my first encounter with actually, physically deliving on my conviction to "JUST SAY NO TO 4E."
But as a lover of our game, I confess, this was not easy to do. The new books have beautiful artwork, and all the allure of new dnd books was there. The look, the weight, the size, the art... I realize now that the temptation must be maddening, even to those who know its not the type of game they want to play.
But I did it! I see the charming treatment of the materials as a hollow shell that contains a different game, but not dungeons and dragons. Someone I knew once used to say, "You can put lipstick on a pig, but its still a pig."
In my mind I imagine there is a support group for this...
"Hello, my name is Pax Veritas, and I resisted the urge to buy 4e today."
"Welcome, Pax. Congratulations."

If it makes you feel better, keep in mind that the 'great artwork' is on the front of the cover, and is thus against the ancient laws of the D&D Core Rulebooks.

"We are the Borg -- err, WotC. Lower your 3.5 books and surrender your money. Your roleplaying will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile."

It still seems a little weird to me to not be buying D&D books.
I have every 3.x WotC title, so to not be getting any books these days (except from Paizo) seems weird.
I would have thought that on release day that I would have been tempted to go to a bookstore and at least look at the 4E books, but...nothing.
I'll probably pick them up used down the road (maybe when 5e releases), but I've set a maximum of $5 as what I'll pay per book.

1st off, i gotta say, I HATE the word grognard as much as I do Newb :)
2nd, great story
3rd, my LGS is actually buying very little of 4e. They're not too enthusiastic about it, and it seems most of their customers aren;t either (myself included)
I like the term grognard, but the way I see it, you have to have played PanzerBlitz and/or PanzerLeader to have earned it.

Bill Dunn wrote:I like the term grognard, but the way I see it, you have to have played PanzerBlitz and/or PanzerLeader to have earned it.Then why not just replace grognard with old? ;)
Because it already includes it, son.
Ah, I remember my first PanzerLeader game. Boy Scout camp. Hunched over the boards in a tent, under lantern light...

I like the term grognard to describe we hardy anti-4e rebels, here's what Napoleon said of his grognards;
'the most difficult of all to lead. He is not a machine to set in motion, but a reasoning being which you must govern...(he) loves to argue because he is intelligent. He is a severe judge of his officers' ability...when he approves of the operations and respects his commanders there is nothing he cannot do.'
Sounds like an apellation to be proud of to me.
