Noble Status

Rise of the Runelords

We know about four so-called noble families in Sandpoint (Deverin, Kaijitsu, Scarnetti, and Valdemar). We know that these families also have cousins in Magnimar. What I'm not sure whether we know is the status of these families in the Empire. Are these four families noble Houses? Were they recognized as noble before they left Korvosa?

Good question, I know they are NOT mentioned in the Guide to Korvosa under the noble families. Perhaps they came straight from Cheliax?? Either way good question, i'd like to know the answer myself.

The noble families in Sandpoint are among the nobility of the Magnimar region. As far as Cheliax, and even Korvosa, are concerned, they're the new kids on the block: They're basically descendants of the dozens of initial families who took to the west to find their own place after Korvosa failed them; they founded Magnimar, and after a generation or few, the nobility formed from the richest and/or most respected families of Magnimar. They don't have ties to Korvosa, really, or anywhere else as nobility.

Thanks! So there might be some Valdemars, for example, in Korvosa (since not necessarily every single member of any given family would have left to found the new city) but they wouldn't be recognized as noble by the Houses.

It could also mean that there might be actual members of the nobility in Magnimar, but they aren't necessarily that important. For example, if some young member of House Ornelos decided to make his own way in the world he might have moved to Magnimar with the rabble, but that doesn't give him any standing there.

Have I got this right?

Thanks for the help!

That sounds right by me.
