Goblinoid roles in Golarion

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Grand Lodge

While posting to another thread I got to wondering about the roles of goblinoids.

I have not read all the Gamemastery modules, just the Pathfinder ones. And so far the only real development of goblinoids is the goblins.

Are orcs a race of wandering tribes, or are the more settled? And where?

Are hobgoblins a race of lawful evil soldiers conquering lands before them (and if so who rules them), or are they rare small tribes more interested in subjugating weaker goblinoids than more populous humanoids?

I have always used orcs as small wandering tribes, too chaotic to remain strong and threatening for long and forced to wander the lands by their more populous and more organized humanoids.

But the organized Lawful evil hobgoblins have always been a thorn in the side of humanoids. They organized into a small nation that is always a threat. Too powerful to destroy utterly, but too warlike to maintain a vast kingdom. Neighbors are always fighting battles with them and occasionally find they have temporarily lost whole regions to the hobgoblins.

Or do all goblinoids just represent small wandering dangerous pests, akin to wolf packs in middle-ages europe?

I think almost all of your questions would be answered in the gripping pages of Classic Monsters Revisited. It has a section on all the goblinoid races, from goblins themselves to hobgoblins to bugbears. There's also one on orcs, so you should check it out for all your monster fluff needs.

I'll second this. As a side note, it made me want to use gnolls.

Me too. For the first time ever.

Same here. Hyena-headed bandit slavers have never seemed so interesting.

Personally, I think the Bugbear entry was the best. It did the most as far as re-envisioning the monster and drawing on classic folk tales. And really, anything that has a pulp era feel, or a fairy/folk tale feel to it makes me want to buy it.

Well, maybe if we could get the darned thing in stores, more of us would check them out for our monster needs!

Just get it from Paizo. It's very worth it.

If I hadn't already ordered it through my FLGS, and if he wasn't in my game group, I might have.

Your FLGS should have it very soon, like this week. I believe the release date is tomorrow for FLGS's (I am at home, sick, so I can't check the schedule...I'm doing this from memory...a very old memory). So hopefully your friend's store will have it in and you can get it then!

*Pours a bowl of chicken noodle soup for LIsa* Feel better soon

I was just at my FLGS today and got a copy. I am about to read some. Very eager to see what they did. On a side not... FLGS cannot get any more Harrow Decks! Please print some more :)

The Gazateer also answers some of the questions (i.e. Belkzan).

(I hope you're feeling better, Lisa.)
