Doh! They captured the "SPOILER"

After an evening of dinner on the Blue Nixie (or pretending to be sick and reading Amella's old love-letters) the water mephit attacked, spilling Avner into the sea.

My Rowyn is a Beguiler, and her Still Spell meant no-one heard the mephit escape. It flew down into the sea and shot through the rope with an Acid Arrow.

One round later and it was unconscious and about to sink - and then the water genasi jumped in and grabbed it. We ended with him wrestling it to the deck, still unconscious. They plan to interrogate it.

Any ideas? They have no idea Rowyn is onboard, and I'm not sure I want to reveal that yet, but if that's the way it goes then they'll learn sooner than I hoped. So far she's hovered above the ship, invisible and under Non-Detection while they do their daily Detect Poison, Evil, Magic and Undead rounds.

I don't think she'll bother trying to poison anyone, at this rate :) But anyway - Mephit + Captured = Unexpected. What do you all think?

I dunno, one of the fun parts of the game (IMO) is not knowing how the pcs and the results of their actions will change the storyline. I would just let the chips fall.

My memory may be rusty, but as I recall, the mephit is effectively an "item" because it comes from the mephit jar (or whatever it's called). I would imagine that prior to the lid on the jar opening, it would have no knowledge of what took place. It's not directly summoned by Rowyn, and it's not under her direct control; it's sort of a "chaos tool."

That being said, I would think that it has no knowledge of Rowyn, how it came to be on the ship, or who released it (or how). If that's so, no amount of interrogation can reveal what it doesn't know.

Look at it from the Mephit's perspective. All of a sudden, here I am and I'm po'ed about it.

heh kudos to your pcs. The mephit was probably purchased in Sasserine from Baub's Potions, Charms, and Such. If it holds a grudge it would be to the mage who imprisoned it in the first place. I doubt it would even be cognisant of who relased it. If needed though you could have it drop hints about some red herring--a hunched fey touched or a gnomish ear hair or a talking horse.

Run with it. Mephits are self-obsessed little buggers, and this one would never admit that it'd been trapped in a jar and sold for a couple of hundred GP or whatever to the first person to show an interest. Nope, he'll spin a terrifying tale of being bound to the will of some fearsomely powerful and threatening mage/devil/dragon whatever and forced to spy on the PCs, only through his unmatched cleverness realising the way to escape his slavery and could the PCs kindly help him to achieve this by doing him a small (and annoying, or expensive...) favour...

I think it's cool they captured the mephit. It's been a year when I ran this but if it is a water mephit. maybe it could become friendly with the genasi. It's always nice to have little helper's guard the ship and tie up those loose ends. In my game I ran little solo side quests on the ship. One pc who was pirate(swashbuckler)went to get the rum in the cargo hold and the barrel was really a mimic . A very comical fight took place and some how it became their friend and rolled around the ship giving out rum rations when they were off ship duty.

Sweet! Thanks guys! I'm glad it happened right at the end of the session, I was running out of brainpower. After a night's sleep the possibilities are endless again!

The only question I have is did they leave Avner to drown, and "rescued" the water mephit?

I could my group probably would have.

I can imagine he had a few words to say about that...

Sorry - missed your question!

Yes indeed, they rescued the mephit first! Avner has been irritating them already. He arrives late for fights and tells them what they did wrong - and calls the female halfling "boy" a lot.

After hearing people's campaign stories, I now imagine Avner as having the voice (and personality) of Elrod the Albino, from Cerebus...

"No, No, Ah say, NO, boy! You ain't never going to achieve nothing with that technique! Power Attack is for bar-room brawlers, not gentlemen like us! Expertise, boy. EX-PER-TISE!
The name of the game is tumble. That's, ah say, that's TUMBLE! Not RUMBLE!"

does poncy shuffle on the spot. Enemies gape in bemusement, then go to fight PC, except for a 10-year-old cabin boy with a rusty knife.
PC drops one enemy, Cleaves into another.

"Watch in awe, as the last prince of his noble race, carves a bloody swathe through the hordes who would defy his noble destiny..."

swings wildly, knocks cabin-boy's hat off. PC charges across the deck, to engage enemy captain

"NO, ah say NO, boy! What's with the charging everywhere? Are you a goat? Just kidding! Heh, you get it? Kid-ding?"

shuts eyes and flails wildly, cutting a button of cabin-boy's shirt

"Oh, ah'm just a-wasting mah time here, with the old Rep.R.Tee. I just keep setting these straight lines up, and you keep missin' them. Nod if any of this is gettin' through, boy (puff) I'd hate to be wasting mah breath (pant)!"

PC crits enemy captain from head to groin. Enemy crew flee in terror.

"Huzzah! See how they run from a proper noble warrior!"

sheathes his blade, unsullied by a single drop of blood. PC glares at him in disgust.

"Good job you had me here to keep you safe, boy! Ah sure hope you been keeping a good watch of mah prowess, picking up a few pointers here and there. There'll be a test, soon, boy!"
"Now, ah hear ya'll got some Black Pearls on this here ship; bit early for cocktails, dont'cha think? Too much of that, and you'll go blind...No, not THAT! You kids today!"

slaps PC hard on the back, unexpectedly, then strides off below deck. PC falls over the rail into the sea, cursing all the way...

Avner in my game has so far successfully avoided all the fights on the ship.

My PCs also interrogated the water mephit, one of them can speak aquan. They didn't find out much though, as I had the mephit basically say it was pickled before and didn't know who released it.

Well, they interrogated (gargling noises), or Marvin the Mephit, as he's now known. He spun a tale of being torn from his frolicsome home life by an evil human wizard with a long beard about ten years previously. He couldn't be specific on facial details, since "all those scale-free faces look the same to me." He was released as his container hit the water and didn't see anyone doing anything.

After ten years of boredom the first thing he saw was Avner hanging between the ships on a rope chair - of COURSE he was going to Acid Arrow the rope. Who wouldn't? All that other stuff with stinking clouds and acid sprays, well, they WERE trying to kill him.

"Fair enough, no hard feelings, guv. Who's up for a swim? I'm starving!"

He'll be hanging around for comic relief, I think. What do Mephits eat? Not ... horses, by any chance?
