A damaged corpse may be able to give partial answers or partially correct answers, but it must at least have a mouth in order to speak at all.
All I really want is his name and where his band operates from. Anything beyond that is a bonus, though it would be nice to know who the Resurrection Man is. BTW - the spell is level 3, so we need someone to cast it for us. Also, it can only be cas once per wek per corpse, so we'd better make the questions count.
dungeonmaster heathy
Right on. The high priestess could do it; 5 questions. I'll get you guys to figure out what you want to know, then I'll figure out what he says; we can retcon it to where she told you last night she'll cast it this evening if you like,...she wouldn't have necessarily had it prepared.

In the morning as well, you also learn the place was secured.
They took the dreamers into custody; some of the dead were Saltmarsh residents. The dreamers aren't talking about anything very useful; they all sound like Manson family members just taken in.
The shoddily dug tunnel is masoned over, and somebody from the Library spends a considerable amount of time warding it with all manner of magicks. There are plans to go in with the Holy Fist of Righteousness at some time in the future.
It's a boring day. The whole day feels like aftermath; the town feels it too. By midafternoon the whispers of the grapevine have all but the oblivious and comatose as completely informed as is usually the case.
By evening, the priestess is ready to do the talking head hoodoo thing.
"I don't like this sort of thing," she prefaces, "but information is information, I don't wonder."
dungeonmaster heathy
Take 2. I'm curious about the Blackmoor as well, so:
Who are you?
Where is your base? (Lair? Temple?)
Who is the Resurrection Man?
What is your relationship to the Anderhoffs?
Who is Kid Blackmoor?
We're waiting on the others to give their input, I take it.

"I pray Pelor's light guide your divination, Lady." Becton adds for support. While I'd hardly call it any physical attraction, I'd say Becton wants to make a good impression - it's like he's talking to the regional manager and doesn't want to screw it up. So, maybe he's sounding a little too corny?

Well ,I'd rather keep the spiritual weapon scrolls, or maybe the potions of cure moderate wounds. But, I'll wait for a verdict otherwise from the group.
Altai Iscarni
Something like this, perhaps?
Okay, the loot again:
cloak (gives off abjuration magic) - Needs ID
a caduceus wand with 2 baboon heads - Might want to just give it to the church. Who would buy such a nasty thing?
4 scrolls-silence x2 and spiritual weapon x2 (all divine) - Becton
2 oils of magic weapon - Gittik?
2 potions of cure mod wounds - Gittik and Stiggy?
1 potion of bull's strength. - Stiggy?
1 nonmagic masterwork mace - sell
2 nonmagic mwork greatswords - sell
1200 g.p. total all three guys

Let me get the rest of it up; that was just from the final combat.
dungeonmaster heathy
also,...
mwork rapier (evocation)
mwork std leather armor (abjuration)
4 mwork daggers (evocation)
keys to the slaughterhouse
magic whetstone (evocation)
200 g.p. worth of knives
1 potion cure moderate wounds
800 g.p. in stolen cash/jewelry
hookah....evil....necromancy......
mwork shortsword (evocation)
300 g.p. in mixed coinage
the bagpipe pipes (?)
I'll be back; gotta go to Wal Mart.
Altai Iscarni
I've never cared about keeping the wealth even - instead, my groups have always wanted to put items where they wold be most useful. So:
- Beldan gets the armour and the rapier.
- Stiggy gets the whetstone
- Mwk daggers w/evocation?
- Altai wants the bagpipes. He should probably give the hookah to the church; he kinda wants it, though.
- Who wants the shortsword?
dungeonmaster heathy
The church will reimburse you guys 3,000 g.p. for the hookah.
Identifying all the stuff I assume?
900 g.p. cost;
rapier +1
std leather +1
4 +1 daggers
short sword +1
cloak of resistance +1
The whetstone, upon sharpening any bladed weapon on it, will make said weapon into a +1 magic weapon for 24 hours. One weapon per day. No charges or anything.
All salable at standard phb/dmg prices.
Saltmarsh has a 3,000 g.p. limit.
I think the next city over, being Seaton, has let's say at least a 5,000 g.p. limit.
dungeonmaster heathy
Beldan will put in a bid for the rapier and the studded leather in that order. If we want to do a “buyback” sort of thing, that’s cool.
Wow … that whetstone rocks – except, does it only work once per day, or like unlimited?
Just one weapon per day, but it doesn't have charges or anything. Edited above post for clarification.
[ooc]It's my answer to "damn, I wish the badguy had a +1 small kukri/whatever my character uses..."| Altai Iscarni |
rapier +1
std leather +1
4 +1 daggers
short sword +1
cloak of resistance +1
whetstone
In addition to this - including money for the hookah and subtracting the identify costs, we get 5100 gp in coin, jewwlry and the assorted other crap. Nice haul! I wouldn't mind a magical dagger - but I'd like money more...
Altai Iscarni
And any time you guys wanna fire up the first question feel free to do so; also you should probably go one at a time; there might be other questions you want to ask based on the answers to the answers...
The first three seem straightforward - after that, we might perhaps want to change directions.
dungeonmaster heathy

Who are you?
Where is your base? (Lair? Temple?)
Who is the Resurrection Man?
What is your relationship to the Anderhoffs?
Who is Kid Blackmoor?
She puts her hand on Becton's shoulder:
"I'm ready."
She invokes powers. The head, sitting on a table, stirs and murmurs.
Q1 "Who are you?"
A1 "I...am Brother Cyros Dominatus. A Skull of Mighty Orcus. I am.....Puffin....no....Brother Cyros Dominatus. Puffin is no more."
Q2 "Where is your base?"
A2 "We don't work like that, fool. Praise Orcus! We have friends everywhere. Of late, I am enjoyed the hospitable table of Eohainn, long buried, long sucked wisdom from dogwood roots in his great Mound in the Rushmoors, to the north. Of late, I am enjoyed the hospitable table of the Anderhoffs.
Q3 "Who is the Resurrection Man?"
A3 "Oh, praise Orcus. He is Orcus' voice in the Oerth. He is sublime guidance, and perfection of means, and the bringer of the ideal. He brings the New Day. He is everything; he is the Messiah of a New Day.
All Praise might Orcus, his eternal might, his wisdom forever."
Any changes?....I gotta crash anyhow.

I'm thinking we forget that 'Kid Blackmoor' character for now - we can ask Kinto about him later. Instead, we should ask the Skullface's head about how many other Orcus-followers there are in town, and how many he brought with him.
dungeonmaster heathy
Q4; Q5
"I brought ten skull-swords, to see them well-horsed, and 20 church laymen disguised as pilgrims. We have 25 faithful here in Saltmarsh, so far; yet the future looks bright."
With that, the head slumps; and is lifeless again. The priestess looks as if a chill has come over her.
"Steam me some wine please, Obercrambie;" she says to the old doorman.
Elgan Dreadwood
Elgan shudders when the ceremony is over.
"Dat's jes' spooky chere'!" Is all he says.
Yep! gimme my money honey! I wanna go SHOPPING! Figure I'll mostly go for utility items. unless I can get a set of shifter armor for less than 3G's, (and I believe I can!) I'm tired of getting hit while I'm slicing and dicing! If I get get shifter armor, I'll probably go for one of those basic 'build it yourself' items in the SRD. You know, the 'lvl 2 spell @ caster lvl 3 @ 2times/day =XGP''
I'm thinking of building me a necklace that casts Barkskin and magic fang for me once or twice each per day, so I can concentrate on other things! :)
Altai Iscarni
"What a nasty, nasty man... Here - as interesting as this thing is, I feel it is better that the church of Pelor take care of it." Altai hands over the hookah to the clerics. "Now, how many pilgrims are in town? Perhaps we could round up the lot and find out who are Orcus infiltrators?"
Hookah out - 3000 gold into the party coffers. I'd say that's a nice trade.
Becton of Pelor
Becton merely nods at the order. "It's the least thing I want to do, Great Lady of Pelor."
"But I'm worried how the standing of the church will affected by some of these 'pilgrims' running around committing foul deeds."
"I will engender only to pursue those responsible for villany against Saltmarsh and this temple - wherever that may be located."

dungeonmaster heathy wrote:Elgan: you've heard the name "Eohainn" before. Can't remember where,....How about me? Knowledge (history) 16+4=20, Knowledge (local: Keoland) 11+4=15.
Via history....he was an ancient warlord; somewhat like "King Arthur," nobody knows with any certainty exactly who he was or when he existed, or indeed, if he was an amalgamated mythological figure attributed many heroic deeds, imagined or actually perpetrated by historical figures from the old times.
He quite possibly existed before the time of the Suel's appearance in the Sheldomar...| Elgan Dreadwood |
"Eohainn,... long buuried, long sucke' wisdom from da' dogwood roots in his great Moun' in dah Rushmoors,... to da north." Elgan muses aloud, trying to jog his memory. "Ah know ah've heerd dat name befo'e,..."
Ah'm,... I mean I'm pretty sure that 'Beastskin Armor' is found as a magical modifier to any armor type, and is found in the MIC. If memory serves, it allows the armor to NOT be absorbed when shifting into beastform, allowing it to function normally when shifting. Only problem I see is that any decent armor has a 'maximum speed possible' limit, which would seriously curtail one of the main reasons for shifting! I'll look at it again. Tell me what you think when you get a chance. Thanks.
Altai Iscarni
Aren't you thinking of Wild Armour? That stuff's expensive...
dungeonmaster heathy
Aren't you thinking of Wild Armour? That stuff's expensive...
I found Beast Skin in Complete Adventurer; it's a +2 bonus cost, and each armor shift uses up a daily use of wild shape; so I don't know how to compensate for that for a shapeshifter; guess I might not, or figure out some other little ploy. I'll think about it; tell you what I come up with.
I kinda dig the shapeshifter variant, and plan on playing one if I get a chance some day. Wish it had some more peripheral rules support, like fun magic armor or something.
That's the pisser about the splats; the later the work was produced in the history of 3.5, the less likely that whatever it is has much in the way of additional support.

Just to finish off the bookkeeping:
rapier +1 - to Beldan
std leather +1 - to Beldan
4 +1 daggers - sell all four?
short sword +1 - sell it?
cloak of resistance +1 - to someone with dodgy saves. I'm thinking Gittik or Stiggy
In addition to this - including money for the hookah and subtracting the identify costs, we get 5100 gp in coin, jewelry and the assorted other crap. If we sell the daggers and the shortsword, our net haul becomes 10100 gold!

ok. I'll take the cloak and one dagger.
dungeonmaster heathy
Stiggy tries out the bagpipes. After washing them carefully.
He can't make much of a noise with them; the bag was the creature's throat sack and as such they have to be reattached to an actual bag to work in any reasonable fashion. I don't even know if the canter or any of the drones could be winded, or if so with any effectiveness.
