True Strike + Vorpal = ???

So what exactly happens if you whack someone with a vorpal weapon while under the effects of True Strike?

Does it crit? If it does, off with his head!

Well, that's what I don't get. Is it any auto-threat?

Vorpal weapons are only really dangerous if your roll a crit in the normal fashion. True strike doesn't affect criticals or threats in any way.

All that matters is what you roll on the die itself -- if the die (not including any of the modifiers) rolls in the threat range of the weapon, roll again to confirm. Yes, with true strike, you'll probably confirm, but the spell has no effect on the threat range of the weapon.

True Strike isn't an auto threat. It just ("just") adds a +20 to hit. Still need to roll in threat range to threat a crit.

Quoting the DMG 3.5 pg 226

Vorpal: This potent and feared ability allows the weapon to sever the heads of those it strikes. Upon a roll of Natural 20, the weapon severs the opponent's head from its body. Some creatures, such as aberrations and all oozes, have no heads, others such as golems and undead creatures other than vampires, are not affected by the loss of their heads. Most other creatures, however, die when their heads are cut off. The DM may have to make judgement calls about this sword effect.

true strike is not a natural 20, so as a dm i would not allow the effect of the weapon to activate.

True strike would add 20 to the attack roll.

Also note that vorpal only works on a natural 20, regardless of the weapon's normal crit range. This prevents people from getting keen vorpal scimitars and decapitating people left and right. On the flip side, you also do not need to roll a confirmation for the crit if you roll a natural 20. You essentially have a 5% chance to instantly kill almost any living thing.

You actually have a 1/400 chance of using the vorpal ability.

in my campaign's and in the campains i play in we disregard the conformation roll. it seems to light up the game a little.

Save abberations, oozes, guys that are too big, guys with more than one head, and any other creatures that are immune to critical hits.
