I recently brought my group back from Occipitus (we had the Redgorge siege played out before plane shifting) and they needed a few thousand XP to make it to the appropriate level for Secrets of the Soul Pillars. I just told them that and they agreed on doing a bit of roleplaying for picking up extra story bits and loot (you can always lure players into a certain direction, if you can afford to dish out some hard to come by loot .-)
First they cleaned out the plain of cysts and the dragon hoard (using a divination to find it) then they returned to the material plane with plenty of treasure (total worth of over 100,000 gp as they had collected stuff since 2 chapters without distributing it properly).
I picked up an old idea by Delvesdeep and ruled that their plane shift spell brought them into the vicinity of Sasserine with the full intention to hook them up with the "Navalant goes searching out Vhalantru" idea.
I went through a few monster books and found a Beholderkin "Gouger", which is essentially a Beholder-killer, bred by some wizards exactly for that purpose. Monster's a CR 11, perfect match (which it was!).
But to make a sound useful write-up, let me put this into a format in true Delvesdeep fashion...

The search for the real Vhalantru
---------------------------------------------
Event 1 - Reaching Sasserine
The party returns from Occipitus and their plane shift spell sends them into the vicinity of Sasserine. Being the major city in the Cauldron region, it offers a wealth of opportunities to adventurers just returning from planar travels with a big treasure bag to boot.
Near town they meet a farmer from the Cauldron environs, who recognizes the group from earlier deeds and briefs them about the most recent news.
Event 2 - Looking for a tavern
They hear about or experience some of the taverns (I actually used Delvesdeep's write up about Sasserine, available from therpgenius.com, which contains a lot of very neat ideas for memorable taverns) and may chose their inn freely. Steering them to a particular one is also an option. (Deep Sleep would fit very nicely)
Event 3 - Gather information
The PCs recognize that Navalant has been seen in the city. They track down the place where he stayed and learn about his motives for coming. It helps if they have already heard about rumors of Vhalantru running the Cauldron show or about the fact that Navalant has been missing in Cauldron for some days / weeks. It strikes them as strange, that he did seem to travel alone and it has obviously NOT been a business trip.
Event 4 - Investigations and visits
The party learns that Navalant just left a few days ago presumably going back to Cauldron. He had visited the Winking Eye on several occasions and stayed at the Deep Sleep instead of the Golden Giant, where he would spend the nights if he were here on Cauldron business. It beomes clear that he was trying to look into the history of a noble that had moved from Sasserine to Cauldron and is now part of the council.
Event 5 - Retracing Navalant's steps
The party learns that Navalant has been doing research on the Vhalantru family. They are told (or find out in libraries) that an old mansion has been deserted for more than 15 years. According to some people who saw Navalant on the day he left, he seemed to have succeeded in what he was trying to do and left deliberately. (In reality, Mhad, the vampire, who had already been contacted by Lady Rhiavadi about the upcoming meeting, had been visiting the "Deep Sleep" proprietors and realized that Navalant was on to something. She dominated him and sent him back to Cauldron, right into his doom, to Vhalantru's doorstep)
Event 6 - Beholder assassin
The party should be encouraged to search the old Vhalantru mansion (if necessary, by NPC tips) and find a long abandoned 2 story mansion with a roof trapdoor and finger thick dust inside. They are bound to stumble across a living room with signs of a battle and a blood stain (aged 15 years) on a door. When they make it down into the basement, they find the Gouger, trapped in the basement (he got down there after using a polymorph potion) and still waiting to kill Orbius, which he was sent to do. They also find the skeletal remains of a long dead person (the murdered real Vhalantru), dead since 16 years.
The advent of that assassin prompted Orbius to make a quick run for Cauldron in disguise of Vhalantru instead of covering up the murder and preparing properly.
That's so far as we've played already, further events (and details about the events so far) will come during the next week.
Comments and tips about the current sequence are certainly appreciated.
Cheers,
Nib

Sounds good Nib. I haven't written this one up yet but what you have done follows the basic storyline I envisaged. I was going to start the adventure from Cauldron and use Ophellha Knowlern and her last meeting with the Lord Mayor as the adventure hook.
I haven't got use of the Forgotten Realms books but the Gouger sounds like a clever addition. I found an old boxed set of the Undermountain which included a write up on something called the Death Kiss and another few beholderkin. I was going to use an venerable 'Elder Orb' as the main villian of the adventure and Orbius' previous leader.
My idea was to have the adventure as a minor adventure/side trek staged between Secrets of the Soul Pillars and Lords of Oblivion or even half way through LoO after they despose of Jil but before the Party.
It was meant to provide the shock factor when they find all the suits in the beholders lair of Vhalantru and others.
I'm glad to hear someone else is using the Sasserine document and you are enjoying the Taverns and Inns. I really enjoyed writing up this city.
Well done nib and if you need any help with ideas or just need a sounding board feel free to let me know

Event(s) 7+
To be decided, but I've stumbled across a great fit in the d20 adventure "Vampires and liches", which is perfectly level-appropriate. I will try to run the party into the sewers of the underguild with a few hooks they can learn from the "Deep Sleep".
And then report on how they're doing.

Event 7 - More information
The house of the former Vhalantru had some letters which let the party track down relatives, who they can get extra info from. They can retrace the steps of Navalant, who went to the town stacks and retrieve info that about 16 years ago, the taxes for the Vhalantru mansion were no longer paid. The house was found deserted and it was tried to sell it off. Since rumors of it being haunted exist, it didn't find a buyer. The church of Pelor may also help, as (the real) Vhalantru was about to get married by a priest of said church, but after arranging everything didn't show up to the occasion.
The party should conclude in the end, that the Vhalantru in Cauldron is not the same as the one that lived in Sasserine in past times.
Event 7b - Beholder dinner
Meanwhile Navalant gets eaten by Vhalantru. If the party happens to scry upon him in time, they may get a last glimpse of his breakfast at the (almost) rebuilt "Lucky Monkey".
Event 8 - Vampires
The characters hear - again - about Vampires in the city (a kobold sorcerer vampire gets a bit reckless) and - whether they stay at the Deep Sleep themselves or not, they may want to go investigate. They can assault the kobold, who is trying to get his share of blood during the night and follow him, once turned gaseous, to a locked door, behind which a staircase leads into the vampire lair.
Event 9 - Attack
The party goes to solve the vampire problem. Whether out of their own motivation (for being bitten) or because they are asked by hard to turn down petitioners. Another motivation may be that they need a second base of operations while their presence in Cauldron is only tolerated by officials (after the Redgorge incident). Becoming heroes in Sasserine would certainly help to create another location for access to certain resources.
In my campaign, I've used "Vampires & Liches" from Necromancer games as the lair of the vampires, but you can easily devise your own tomb.
Event 10 - Resolution
Resolution of the problem (or ignorance of it). The party gets to keep all treasure retrieved from the underground complex and as much story related material as you like.
I imagine setting up links to Mhad (obviously), Vervil Ashmantle, having been inspired by the idea from the module, that the vampires also run some slave trade, while a glabrezu held prisoner at the vampire hideout, might get freed by the party and would become a recurring villain with the remaining demons from the Demonscar.
There also is the possibility of bringing in the Necrocants and Khyron Bonesworn, since he is supposed to be from the Sasserine area. Maybe his adventurer group has been set up by a vampire and he goes to take revenge on some vampires that he can find more easily.
Once I find some spare time, I'm gonna go into more detail and post the result on the rpgenius.com site.

Additional ties to other organizations in town, which which the vampire clan has (or had) dealings with can be (in no particular order):
Ebon Triad, Orbius (before he assumed the identity of Vhalantru), Order of the Silver Dream (especially when combined with references to Mhad), one of the rather nondescript cagewrights, who might have had to do with that group. They are around for quite some time after all, being vampires and all that ;-)

Nib,
Thanks so much for this adventure sketch. It's a great idea and I think I'll adapt it for my campaign. Please drop a note here when you post to rpgenius! We are midway through TotSE now and this would be a nice backstory for Orbius/Vhalantru as well as giving Navalant something to do before he is so ignomimiously eaten. Awesome.

Hey,
I finally got around getting that write-up finished. I'm afraid I didn't add too many monsters or details about the underground guild, but I found a clever module, which did the job perfectly for me. And while giving back some work to the community comes naturally, putting in extra work, which may never get used, is another story.
It can be found at the RPGenius under chapter 6 (as it was my link from chapter 6 back to Cauldron).
Cheers,
Nib
