Magic missile targeting

3.5/d20/OGL

Let's say I have some kind of horrid bloodsucker, like a leech or a tick, locked onto my flesh. Would a Magic Missile (cast by a buddy, presumably) obliterate it without causing me any damage, even if it's small? Does the missile size down for a very small target?

Short answer: Yes. Magic Missile will do just fine.

Long Answer: The best "guideline" in this case would be to consider it as a grapple. What are the rules for firing an arrow into a grapple? What are the rules for casting a spell at one grappled target but not the other, etc? Then consider that Magic Missile is an "rules exception" for casting a spell in its spell description (most spells are). This long (non) answer is so you can read up the relevant rules and determine if my short answer is valid.

regards.

SRD Magic Missile:

Spoiler:

Magic Missile
Evocation [Force]
Level: Sor/Wiz 1
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Targets: Up to five creatures, no two of which can be more than 15 ft. apart
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: Yes

A missile of magical energy darts forth from your fingertip and strikes its target, dealing 1d4+1 points of force damage.

The missile strikes unerringly, even if the target is in melee combat or has less than total cover or total concealment. Specific parts of a creature can’t be singled out. Inanimate objects are not damaged by the spell.

For every two caster levels beyond 1st, you gain an additional missile—two at 3rd level, three at 5th, four at 7th, and the maximum of five missiles at 9th level or higher. If you shoot multiple missiles, you can have them strike a single creature or several creatures. A single missile can strike only one creature. You must designate targets before you check for spell resistance or roll damage.

Yes. But the missile can only affect one creature (per missile) with no chance of "blow through" damage. It hits unerringly (even if it is a fruit fly moving at mach 10) as long as you can see the target and it isn't completely blocked off (say in a cube of wall of forces).

Expensive fly swatter/leech killer but...

Basically, if you can see it, you can hit it. No worries about hitting bystanders. No collateral damage. The magic missile hits what you target.

Saltwater or a cigar would be simpler, and your buddy would still have his spell. :P
