"Your bird...?" says Mitnal.
“Yes, he’s from Magnimar,” Jessa explains.
"I am Mitnal the basketweaver, son of the Shriikirri-Quah, what you would call the Hawk Clan. The Raven ... 'your bird' ... has been visiting with us. Perhaps he thought you might need some help."
Jessa looks at Blackwing with a dubious expression. “Is that so? Just trying to be helpful, huh?”
“Yes,” Blackwing bobs his head, then leans past Jessa’s chin to spare an appreciative nod to Mitnal. He definitely liked this big barbarian Mitnal of the Shriikirri-Quah.
"Many people are coming into town for the festival. I have sold a few baskets but hope to sell a few more. If you permit, I will go with you to the Rusty Dragon," Mitnal said. Smiling at the chance to lighten the mood he adds "The Shoanti have a saying: 'Many adventures begin in a tavern'."
"I've heard that one," says Kinmorn as he begins slowly walking once more towards the Rusty Dragon. "Shall we see what Ameiko is cooking today then? Seeing as how the bird is hungry?"
“It seems this whole day has been an adventure. And we could all probably use a bite to eat," Jessa agrees, "The caravan didn’t have much in the way breakfast this morning. So you’re friends of Kinmorn? Have you lived in Sandpoint for long?”
OOC: Yaay, triple-digit posts in only 5 days of gaming!

"I don't live in Sandpoint," says Mitnal without further explanation. Noting that the two women are not carrying many goods, he begins to walk towards the Rusty Dragon.
Gengar Whittlewood
Gengar uses the interchange between the lady and the bird to regain his composure. "I am Gengar Whittlewood." The dwarf bows to Jessa and then Shantare. "I'm just out and about, enjoying the festival preparations. Are you a mighty wizard? Going to the Rusty Dragon? Great! Mitnal here owes me lunch. But aren't you two lovely young ladies going togive Ameiko a run for her money?"
If the ladies are carrying anything Gengar signals Mitnal to hand over the baskets so the barbarian can help.

Jessa smiles at the dwarf's exuberance. "Nice to meet you. I'm Jessa Eventide. A wizard, yes. Or more of a witch, I suppose. But a nice one. And since Blackwing no doubt ate at least some of your lunch, perhaps I should be the one to repay you and Mitnal for your troubles?"
"As for the Rusty Dragon, it seems like a lot of people have heard of this place," Jessa continues, glancing at Kinmorn as they travel down the street, "Who's Ameiko? Does she work there?"
OOC: Jessa is carrying a simple backpack, but it doesn't look overly burdensome. Blackwing probably weighs more and Jessa doesn't seem strained by having him on her shoulder.

"I gotta warn ya, I can get mighty hungry on another's tab." Gengar laughs.
"Have you ever killed anyone with a fireball?!? Do you think you could throw a fireball now? I mean, over the water of course." Gengar smiles to Kinmorn.
"The Shoanti have a saying: 'Many adventures begin in a tavern'."
"An adventure!" Gengar exclaims. "I desperately be wanting to open my own shop - hey, you could sell yo' baskets there!"
Gengar pauses a moment and seems to be counting on his fingers. "I need to see a druid before we go off slaying dragons though. Anyone know a good druid?"
Addressing Shantare, "Hey, you look more the outdoorsy type. Know any druids?"
Kinmorn Erastilson
"Who's Ameiko? Does she work there?"
"I hope the only dragons around here to slay remain well rusted," says Kinmorn, and then to answer Jessa's question he explains, "Ameiko is the owner of the Rusty Dragon. Her family helped found Sandpoint. Sandpoint glass is popular in places still I am told and the family makes glass. At least her father does. Ameiko left home a few years ago and when she came back, she bought the Dragon. Her kitchen is very popular, though I'm a bit partial to the Spiced Potatoes at Risa's myself."

"Sounds interesting. Glass, you say?" Jessa muses, "That's good to know. I've been reading some books on how to brew various potions. I may need supplies for that if I eventually decide to try it. And, if I do, having a glassworks business right here in Sandpoint would be very convenient."
OOC: I'm ready to move on to the Rusty Dragon and advance the timeline a little. It should be interesting to see Mitnal's interaction with Ameiko judging by all that color in his cheeks.

As the five of them reach the Inn, with its rusted namesake adorning the roof above, Kinmorn hurries forward to open the door for his four (five counting the bird) companions.
"After you," he says with a gracious smile.
The Narrator
Despite its name, the Rusty Dragon is considerably nicer than Jessa was perhaps expecting. A large, three story building, the inn is an old building, but well maintained, though the corrosive sea air has given all the buildings on this end of town a faded, weathered look. Atop the inn's roof, a large, rusty weather vane in the shape of a dragon leaves no doubt as to the identity of the building. Above the transom on the front door, deep gouges and scars in the wood indicate some sign or carving once lived there, but has since been removed. A riot of smells fills the air on this street -- blood and offal from the Sandpoint Meat Market just down the street behind you, the earthy smell of horses from a stable next door, and the pungent, yeasty smell of a brewery somewhere nearby -- but the salt tang of sea air dominates all.
A small but steady stream of people pass in and out of the front door to the inn, and the warm, spicy smell of food beacons you inside. Although wide windows of fine glass light the common room, it takes a moment for everyone's eyes to adjust to the dimness once you've stepped inside. The L-shaped room takes up much of the ground floor, and many large round tables fill the room. On the left hand side of the room, a large hearth stands unlit, though a significant coating of black soot speaks of frequent usage. Along the right side, a long counter serves as a bar, and a door behind the counter leads to the kitchen and service areas. Across from you, where the bar meets the back wall of the room, another, smaller counter, situated next to a stair leading to the upper floors, serves guests seeking rooms at the inn. On the wall next to you, a board with a sign over it saying "Help Wanted" is covered in bits of paper and parchment.
Most of the tables are full of people, eating, drinking, conversing and laughing, but it's easy enough to find an empty one large enough to fit your group. Within minutes of you sitting down, a young, raven-haired Varisian barmaid approaches the table.
"Well met, friends. My name is Kynni, and welcome to the Rusty Dragon inn. For brunch today, we have prepared a spiced rabbit stew, with peas and carrots, a side of apple smoked bacon, and mincemeat puff pastry. To drink, we have a nice lager, a red Korvosan table wine, or a lemon honey mead."
Shantare

Shantare gives a rare smile to Kinmorn, then sits down with the others. This is an interesting bunch Shantare thinks, after silently listening to their conversations. She looks around, trying to find the Ameiko the others were talking about. It'll be fun to see what will happen when Ameiko and Mitnal meet She wonders with a sly grin. I havn't seen a man that red for a long time.

"My dear Kynni, how many times have I begged you to just bring me a glass of your finest wine as soon as you see my shadow darken yo' threshold?" The dwarf beams with joy and laughs a little too loud. "Make it two glasses today lassy, I've wandering all over this town. Matter of fact, the first round of drinks for my companions is on me! Oh, and a big plate of tha' spiced jerky, please."
Gengar tries to sit between Shantare and Jessa. Then while everyone gets settled he scans the room.
Spot: (1d20+1=3) - bummer.

"Nothing fermented for me either," says Kinmorn with a smile, "Juice or water, but the rabbit stew sounds good, and both sides."
"Its maybe good you arrived when you did," says Kinmorn to the two women sitting at the table, "By tomorrow I expect most of the rooms in the inns will be filled. I really would like to see a large crowd here for the festival."

Mitnal also scans the room, but not for the same reason Gengar does.
Rolls a spot check.1+1=2. heheh.
Whatever you each think you're looking for in the room, your minds are clearly elsewhere this morning. I do wonder what could be so distracting for either of you.
Kynni
"Some of your rabbit stew and ... no wine ... Could you give me sweetened hot water?" asks Mitnal.
"Nothing fermented for me either," says Kinmorn with a smile, "Juice or water, but the rabbit stew sounds good, and both sides."
"Teatotallers, eh? Well then I have a treat for you. Our Lady Ameiko has recently acquired a supply of a delicate, fruited tea. Don't ask me where it's from. She won't tell me. But it's delicious, and not the slightest bit alcoholic. You'll love it, I promise."
And with that, Kynni heads back into the kitchen.
Jeslara "Jessa" Eventide
Jessa spends most of her time silently soaking in the atmosphere of the Rusty Dragon before finally declaring, "This is...nice. Much nicer than I expected. I don't know what the rooms are like at the White Deer, but I think I may have found a better inn than poor Torrick."
"So...what to eat? If our good friend Gengar here is ordering drinks for everyone, why shouldn't I offer to pay for the meal?" She waves away any protests, especially those offered by Gengar or Mitnal. "It's the least I can do. To repay you for the kindnesses offered to Blackwing here." She nods toward Shantare, "And the company in being new to Sandpoint." Then nods once more to Kinmorn, "And the excellent advice and guidance you gave us."
"Now...all those featured dishes sounded good. I can't wait to try them. I'm positively famished." Jessa looks around the room once more. "So...where's this Ameiko you mentioned? I should probably see her about a room after our meal."
Kinmorn Erastilson

Mitnal nods quietly "You are very kind. Perhaps I can repay you somehow. ... I hear that Ameiko has a policy of offering a half price room to anyone who tells a story of exciting adventure. Should we ask her about it?"
"Is that so? Hmmm..." Jessa ponders this new bit of information, "Well, as long as it doesn't have to be tales of adventures one has personally experienced, I should be able to spin something interesting from all the myths and legends I've read while studying the history of distant lands. And if it saves me money on securing a room during my stay in Sandpoint, you'll have repaid me far beyond the cost of a mere meal. Thank you, Mitnal."
Mitnal
"If she will allow tales that we have not personally experienced I have one as well. It is a tale that I heard last summer in Galduria and would repeat. I believe that in the evening, one may tell their tales to the guests of the Rusty Dragon but I am not sure. If that is so, perhaps we can both take a turn," says Mitnal.
Shantare
"Half pay for a good story? Hmmm...Actually, this is the first time I have been out of my home town, so I haven't had many experiences to tell about. I expect you have a few tales of situations your raven has gotten you into." She says to Jessa with a wry smile. "He looks like a curious one.

"I suppose so, but I wouldn't care to build up his significant ego by describing those situations as inspiring adventures," she winks, "This bird is a troublemaker sometimes. But I do love and care for him."

Knowledge (nature) 1d20+7=19+7=26That sound isn't right. Almost like something is still under (or inside?) the cow and eating its way out. Nothing natural does that. Nothing that large, anyway. "What do you think, Spot? Hey, where'd that human go? Sir? Sir!?"
Ruano sighs. It seems unlikely that he had been led into a trap, but the human had disappeared. Maybe he was just cowardly: a lot of humans seem that way. For now, his problem is dealing with whatever attacked the cattle.
I'm going to resume the 'poke it with a stick' plan.

I'm going to resume the 'poke it with a stick' plan.
Your staff poke to the cow carcass provokes a definite response. The sound changes to a snarling, high pitched growl and the cow's skin begins to bulge and split at the neck, closest to you, as if something were trying to punch its way out from inside. You and Spot both back away instinctively as a stout animal muzzle, slick with blood and saliva, chews its way out from inside the cow, its sharp teeth snapping and biting wildly.
Once it has pushed its head through the side of the cow, the wolverine - easily as big as you are - begins to push and claw its way through the hole it has created. It is, for the moment, stuck halfway out of the cow, but it doesn't look to be stuck long.
It also doesn't look too happy about being poked with a stick, even through a side of beef, but that's a wolverine for you.

"I do indeed allow my guest to share tales of adventure in the evenings, as you well know, Mitnal," says a voice from behind you.
The woman standing behind Mitnal surveys the table with a welcoming smile. Her delicate features give her face an ageless, youthful quality, but something about her iridescent, hazel eyes speaks of weary experience. She wears a colorful Varisian top that liberally exposes her tattoo covered shoulders and cleavage, and her jet black hair is pulled into a tight braid.
"Well met, friends, and welcome to the Rusty Dragon. My name is Ameiko."
Kynni appears from the kitchen and places a set of fine glass cups on the table, as well as a pair of tea cups and saucers in front of Mitnal and Kinmorn.
"I think you'll find you've made an excellent choice, Gengar. I thought of you when I purchased it yesterday. I'm glad to see it will be making its way into your gullet." Ameiko uncorks a bottle of wine and begins pouring the fragrant red liquid into the glasses. As she does, Kynni returns with a small brass pot, and pours the contents into the tea cups.
"As Mitnal mentioned, I do allow my guests to share stories of adventure in the evenings, after supper, true, embellished, or otherwise. I even share my own tales and songs. All anyone who wishes to share a story need do is speak up." Her last sentence seems directed at Mitnal in particular.

As you finish your spell, the wolverine bursts from the cow's chest and charges at you, its tail and back fur standing straight up. It closes about half the distance in an odd sideways hop before it gets a strange look in its eyes and stops in its tracks. It cocks its head at you, then spins around in a slow circle, looking for the threat that was present just a moment ago. Finally convinced the threat is gone, it lowers its blood matted hackles and walks over to you.
As it gets close to you, you realize the animal stands at least two inches taller than you and probably outweighs you by at least fifty pounds. It nuzzles up against your chest, leaving a broad, dark stain across your jerkin and almost knocking you to the ground. It gives you three quick licks to the face, soaking your head in a thick coating of slobber and giving you a good solid blast of reeking carrion breath in the process. Then the wolverine turns and waddles away across the far pasture.
He wonders what would make a wolverine attack three beef cattle. Knowledge (Nature) check = 1d20+7 = 5 + 7 = 12.
You've known wolverines to attack cattle before. You've known them to take on bears five times their size. But something here isn't right. You're not entirely convinced it was the wolverine that killed the cattle.

"I think you'll find you've made an excellent choice, Gengar. I thought of you when I purchased it yesterday. I'm glad to see it will be making its way into your gullet." Ameiko uncorks a bottle of wine and begins pouring the fragrant red liquid into the glasses.
"Ahhhh, may Cayden Cailean bless you abundantly." Gengar says reverently and swirls the glass. He sips the wine and appears to ponder the deepest mysteries of the universe. After a second he swallows loudly and sighs. "This will indeed do..." and he takes a more sizable gulp.
"As Mitnal mentioned, I do allow my guests to share stories of adventure in the evenings, after supper, true, embellished, or otherwise. I even share my own tales and songs. All anyone who wishes to share a story need do is speak up." Her last sentence seems directed at Mitnal in particular.
"Now this will be good!" Gengar elbows Shantare rather hard and finishes his glass of wine. The dwarf holds up his glass to Ameiko for a refill.

Shantare pulls the glass to her, and takes a sip with a sigh of relief. Looking about her, she settles down in her chair, getting ready a long night of story's.

Mitnal shoots an angry look at the dwarf and then says "Ameiko ... I have a story to tell. It is not my own but I believe it to be true and worth telling."
He then reddens deeply for no good reason whatsoever. "Perhaps, I shouldn't ... No. Yes. After supper we will participate in the tales and songs."

Ruano exhales deeply with relief. Animals, especially upset ones, don't always take well to having their minds influenced, even if it is for their own good. Looks like this one was stuffed full enough that he decided to go home, where it is less crowded. He swipes lightly at his armor, trying to wipe some of the blood off. The scent of blood always draws the wrong sort of attention in the wild. And he doesn't need Spot chewing on his armor all night, either.
The wolverine might have done this, but cows aren't competitors, so there's no reason for it to have attacked and killed all three. It'd have a hard enough time eating one. And why wouldn't the other two have at least run away while one was being mauled?
"What do you think, Spot? Did our new friend do this?"
Time to examine the bodies.

"I shall certainly speak up at the appropriate time then," Jessa smiles at Ameiko, "Being new to town...and intending to stay for awhile...I most certainly need a room. And considering the White Deer is off-limits to me, thanks to a certain 'colleague' of mine, the Rusty Dragon is where I'd prefer to stay. And a less expensive rate would certainly allow me to enjoy your inn's hospitality that much longer..."

I assumed this was my 3pm meal - I had lunch up at the cathedral, then some smoked fish about an hour and a half later, and then we ended up at the Rusty Dragon...
OOC: My how time flies then. Jessa just arrived on the caravan in the morning. So she and Blackwing must have spent quite awhile exploring the town before meeting up with Kinmorn at the cathedral. I guess she wasn't kidding when she said she was famished. :)

Gengar stairs blankly for a moment at the priest.
"Oh, yeah, a druid. Someone said we were going on an adventure! I like to get a handfull of goodberries whenever I venture to the wilderness. Leaves more room in my pockets for gold." The dwarf laughs loudly.
"Isn't there a crazy ol' druidess in town? Maybe I'll go hit her up for some before dinner."
How much does Gengar owe for the wine?
Kinmorn Erastilson
"A Druidess?" says Kinmorn. It is his turn to stare blankly for a moment. "There well might be."
Suddenly flummoxed Kinmorn sits back. A second later he smiles. Maybe the dwarf meant old Madam Mvashti.
Kinmorn falls silent for a time as he tries to recall what he can about Madam Mvashti and whether she might indeed sell goodberries.
Of course, he then thinks to himself, it is possible the dwarf was only trying to be funny.

For supplies, Master Gandethus often traded at the Feathered Serpent and that is where I myself bought the supplies necessary for the scribing of scrolls when Father Zantus helped tutor me in that art."

"But what about entertainment?" she asks, "Aside from telling tales for half-price rooms and the occasional Swallowtail Festival, what do the citizens of Sandpoint do for an evening of fun?"
