Did WotC lie us?

4th Edition

Checking some 3.5 archives and getting all what I can before they delete it, I found a curious page where after the success of 3rd edition WotC was already (in 2001) talking about a countdown to 4th edition an according to the information provided over there 4th edition was escheduled to april 1 2011. Check it for yourself:

So we were cheated for 3 years, 3 years less for my favorite system, that is not fair.

Did they lie us?

Perhaps you should ask Bryan Rancey.

Thanks for the correction. But in the site was like that, check it.

Lantern Lodge

April 1st, D30 system, etc ... it was an Aprils Fools joke.

Dark Archive

That's what I meant with "April 1st": It was an April Fools joke.

NOTHING serious about it. :-)

Heck, I have Project: A-Ko - The Role Playing Game kicking around here somewhere too...

Liberty's Edge

Isn't the original poster the same dude that started that bizarre "I downloaded a pirated copy of Book of Vile Darkness and now I think Monte Cooke is obsessed with evil etc" thread???

At the risk of sounding harsh, methinks someone is more than a little ... confused.

Or perhaps the person is new to RPGs, or perhaps the person had an off day and didn't notice that it was posted on april fools day. Or maybe they don't have april fools day in his culture. I don't know.

Just remember, the only dumb question is the question not asked, so please ask any question you feel like asking. If its a sincere question seeking information, it deserves a sincere answer.

Unless they thought the hobby wouldn't be there in three more years. Or unless they think the new system will replace 3.5 as your favorite system. Or unless some change in technology or legal stuff meant pushing up the date was a better idea. Or unless they thought there'd be the exact same 'we won't play 3rd edition' talk repeated for 4th edition, no matter when the release was.

We should give the system a chance. The same arguments were made, the same number of people swore off the game before 3rd ed, and it was brilliant. WotC have been good stewards of our game. And it's really their game. They know if it doesn't have dramamtic roleplay potential, I won't buy it. They know if characters have more stuff to do when they level, new people will buy it. They have two groups to keep happy in order to stay in business. If they fail, they'll sell the rights and then you can lobby Paizo to bring back 3.5e.

Just give it a chance. The poeple that brought us 3e deserve that from us.

Isnt anyone seeing the horrible irony here?

WotC decided to pull an April Fools joke on us by scaring everyone and announcing 4th edition is comming in 2011.

I remember this when it was done. Everyone was horrified that 4th was announced and a big commotion went up. Some people figured it out but WotC eventually said "Settle down its OK we were just fooling you."

Now it seems this joke meant to get everyone upset is actually a better scenario than the reality of it all!!!

Hardly. And you didn't have the added benefit of reading this on an April 1st.

It's not unusual that many people fall for those jokes.

I can remember the old "3.51e with rules boosters" jokes that was pulled. I did it myself on forums I run, presening them with "evidence" that wizards plans to remodel D&D, releasing all rules as boosters, where you get your classes and the like piecemeal.

People fell for it, and got quite belligerent before I let them in on the joke.

No harm done.

I realy wouldn't worry too much about the 3.5 archives going away. Unless there is some kind of statement that has been released saying they were being removed. If you look at the archives, they go all the way back to 2000. They also have a bit of older stuff they have available..

.

But then they put out D&D miniatures and almost made the joke a reality...

(As an aside, Games Workshop pretty much DID this with Warhammer Quest - you got, IIRC, six characters in the base game, and they had about 6-10 more you could buy in "booster packs" along with two scenario packs)

With the planned release of a new set of core books every year, it looks like you were more correct than you could ever have known.

I'm a prophet I guess. Cassandra had it good compared to that.

I do think that they're not through yet with that idea. They just need a way to lead up to it.

Thanks for the support, in my culture the fool's day (known as the innocents day) is on December 28th.

Believe it or not when I was seeing the oldest archives those from 2000, there were some links did not work. So beware.

In the United States we have a Fool's Day on December 28th too...only we call it "the day the Christmas credit card bills start arriving". :)
