Gaming Tiers

I know there has to be other system junkies out there like me and I'm curious as to how you would rate your favored systems by "Tiers"

For the purpose of this I'll use 3 tiers.

Your 1st Tier game (or games) is what you play in or run a large majority of the time.

Your 2nd Tier games are what you play or run when looking for a break from the tier 1 category. Mini-campaigns, a few sessions, etc then back to Tier 1 usually.

Your Tier 3 games are the ones which you only occasionally play in or run, usually as a one-shot just to take a big break from your normal gaming.

Games in queue: These are the games you want to break into one of your tiers, just haven't been able to yet.

Games in lower tiers don't mean you like them less, just that you get less a chance to use them.

My breakdown would be:

Tier 1: Castles & Crusades and AD&D 2nd Edition. I run campaigns in both with high regularity.

Tier 2: Rifts, Savage Worlds, Shadowrun 4, BECM D&D

Tier 3: Crimson Empire, Talislanta, Werewolf: The Apocalypse (and the Wild West)

Games in queue: Scion:Hero and Exalted. I'd like to see how these are.

Tier 1: We play 3.5 D&D almost exclusively. Like 95% of the time. I can’t say that it is even in my top 5 favorite games.

Tier 2: Home-brewed Transformers 4.5% of the time.

Tier 3: Star Wars d20/d6, Marvel Super Heroes (TSR or Home-brewed d20) .5% of the time. You’d have to go back nearly 10 years for the last time we played this.

Games in queue: Iron Heroes (modified), D&D 4e (Heavily modified), Powers & Perils. Any of these games I would be willing to run in lieu of 3.5.

First TierHackMaster, Star Wars d6

Second Tier HERO/Champions, d20 (any), Chill, Call of Cthulhu

Third Tier Anything else.

In Queue Deadlands (any version), Aces & Eights

Scarab Sages

Um... I don't have any regular games at the moment so no Tier 1. :meh:

My fave games are Champions, Cyberpunk, Castle Falkenstein, Providence, Feng Shui, Deadlands, 3-3.5 D&D, Amber, Over the Edge. (In no particular order.)

Right now,

Tier 1: D&D 3.5, Spycraft 2.0

Tier 2: Spirit of the Century

Tier 3: D20 Modern and variants (Mars D20, etc.), though it seems I have an endless list of games I'd "like to try".

Dark Archive RPG Superstar 2013 Top 32

This is a very interesting spin on the "What Games Do You Play?" thread. I like it.

Mine are:

First Tier: New World of Darkness, Dark Ages Vampire, D&D 3.5 (Pathfinder currently)

Second Tier: Trinity (this one may be reaching First Tier status very soon), Vampire: The Masquerade, other d20 (Dragonstar, Ravenloft, Star Wars, etc.)

Third Tier: 7th Sea, Aberrant, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Mage: The Ascension, Kindred of the East

In Queue: Changeling: The Lost (nWoD), Serenity RPG, WoW RPG, Star Wars d6, Shadowrun

Tier 1: D&D3.5 (dm), C&C (player)
Tier 2: Silver Age Sentinels, CarWars, GreedQuest
Tier 3: Big Eyes Small Mouth, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness
Games in Queue: GURPS (anything, please!), Twilight:2000, T&T, CyberPunk 2020, MechWarrior/BattleTech

Dark Archive

Tier 0: Online games (City of Heroes/Villains, EverQuest 2)

Tier 1: D&D 3.5, Mutants & Masterminds 2.0, Vampire the Masquerade

Tier 2: GURPS 3.0

Tier 3: Trinity, Aberrant, Adventure!

At last, I was thinking there was no love for GURPS here! GURPS is actually my preferred, I just don't have players for it. Maybe after RotR, I can convince them to try a conversion to one of the "in queue" games for the next campaign.

Tier 1: D&D 3.5

Tier 2: Warhammer FRP

There is no Tier 3, unless you count Descent.

In queue: True20/Fantasy Mutants & Masterminds; GURPS 4th

Note that Steve Jackson Games has just released a PDF ($8 or thereabouts) on how to make D&D characters in GURPS; one on running dungeon adventures is due next.

Tier 1: Hero System
Tier 2: none currently
Tier 3: D&D 3.5¹
Games in queue: BESM, M&M, PDQ, Spirit of the Century and True20

¹Because someone has told me that their game focuses on role playing and is somehow ‘different’ than all the other 3.5 games out there. This is never true and thus far I have been disappointed in every one of them.
