"Thank you, Gyorgy, but that won't be necessary," Kenzo replies. "Although unarmored, as a monk, I have to have faith in my natural abilities and my training. Please, save your spells for our adversaries."

"Rather than breaking a window and drawing attention from those within, I would suggest we try the side entrance by the monastery. We may well need all the advantage we can find, and stealth & surprise could turn the tide of battle."

"Fair play, Kenzo; lead the way."

Hopefully this other door isn't locked. When we get there I'll have another listen at the door.

Gyorgy hears the faint sound of singing and breaking glass through the double doors of the worker's entrance.

These doors are also locked. Examing the workers entrance draws attention to the fact that there are two additional windows facing the monastery, also with curtains drawn.

"They're singing and breaking stuff in their. I think we might be able to shoulder the doors without getting their attention."

I look at the doors, then at the more rugged members of the party, then back at the doors...

Jessa shakes her head. "If they're breaking things, they're probably not going to notice if we break a window, too. Especially with those heavy curtains drawn. But if we go pounding on a heavy locked door, that's probably going to attract attention a lot faster than the alternative."

She looks around at everyone else who's gathered by the door. "Is there no other way then? No key? No lockpicks? Then why spend all our energy hammering on the door until it breaks when we'd be better off conserving it for the fight? Especially if they've got Ameiko and doing who knows what to her? The fastest way in...is through there. And the faster we get in, the sooner we'll save Ameiko and all those missing workers..."

She bends down and picks up a rock, eyeing the window with its drawn curtains.

"Who's with me?"

I losen my mace from it's loop at my belt and pray to Desna to give it Light.

I smile at Jessa, "Could Blackwing unlock the door if we only broke the window a little and let him through, or should I just smash it with my mace?"

OOC: Interesting question. I've kind of viewed Blackwing as a rogue in a raven's body. He certainly demonstrates stealthy skills from time to time...and the occasional sleight of...claw?...beak? But as to whether he has lock manipulation abilities...I'll leave that to Wicht to decide.

If it seems reasonable Blackwing could pull off such a task, I'm not averse to the idea of sending him inside to do it, though.

Short answer: It won't work but feel free to try it if you want.

Long answer: The bird is too small and lacks the strength, mass and leverage necessary to turn the bolts locking the doors. However one is never truly certain of success or failure until an attempt is made so sometimes it is necessary to experiment in order to prove conclusively what one already knows to be true.

If you want, you can make an intelligence check (or Knowledge: Breaking and Entering) with a DC 13. Those who succeed can read the following:

Spoiler:
The doors, windows and bolts are arranged in such a way as to make it possible to break the window on the door, reach inside and turn the bolt.

Male Human (Varisian) Bard 1 HP 10/10 | AC 15/11/14 | CMD 12 | saves F+2 R+2 W+3 | Vision: Perception +5, Sense Motive +1; Init +5 | Status: Normal

I examine the lock and window;

intelligence check (1d20+2=16)

And then use the butt of my spear to smash the window, before reaching through and unhooking the bolt.

Then I push the door open with my spear and peer inside.

The room behind the door appears devoid of life, but it is dark within the room, save for where the sunlight enters through the now open door.

Male Human (Varisian) Bard 1 HP 10/10 | AC 15/11/14 | CMD 12 | saves F+2 R+2 W+3 | Vision: Perception +5, Sense Motive +1; Init +5 | Status: Normal

I step back from the door; "I can't create magical light like Magazin."

As eyes adjust, It is possible to see that there is a wheelbarrel and several shelves within the room. There is also a set of closed double doors straight across from where the party stands. On the wall to the right are two more doors, both closed, and on a wall across from the open doors and to the left there is yet one more close door.

All told, there are five entrances/exit in the room, including the one that leads outside.

The sound of glass shattering can be heard beyond the other set of double doors and a shrill voice sings out, "Breaking bottles is what we do, watch us smash some just for you."

Further details about specifics in the room will require drawing the curtain or creating a light source.

A tingle of fear, anger, and loathing courses through Jessa at the sound of the tiny voices again. "What now?" she asks, "Should we face them directly? Or look for Ameiko first?"

OOC: I believe Magazin already cast light on his mace. Is that enough to illuminate the room?

Kenzo draws his sword from the scabbard on his back and steps into the room. He switches the sword to his left hand and draws a dagger with his right, holding it in a throwing grip. "For all we know, the goblins have Ameiko in there with them," he says, pointing to the double doors. "Maybe we just surprise them and try to take them quickly."

"I'm ready," Jessa says, summoning her courage again, "But before we face them..."

She steps to Kenzo and whispers, "Percevos." Then she gives him a kiss on the cheek. The words and her touch infuse him with a small measure of her arcane power. "For good fortune..." she explains, "Now let's save Ameiko..."

OOC: Jessa uses her diviner's fortune specialist power. Kenzo should receive a +1 bonus to his next attack roll, skill check, ability check, or saving throw as long as he takes such an action within the next 3 rounds.

As the party steps cautiously into the room, the contents of the shelves are revealed to be minerals and chemicals, most of them labeled. There is an open safe on the floor under the window. Whatever was in it is gone now.

More glass shatters in the next room. The roar of a furnace can also be heard through the closed double doors.

"Alright then," Kenzo says, blushing. Eugen, me & Magazin first, with you two following. When I go through the door, I'm going to step to the right to make room for anyone behind me. Everyone ready?"

It's probably a good thing then that you guys are going to get a surprise round. :)

Opening the double doors reveals a rather horrid scene. Goblins seem to be everywhere in the room. The long room houses several roaring furnace openings on the left and there are tall windows (with the curtains drawn) to the right. Down the middle of the room are marble tables, though there is a relatively clear space about twenty feet in.

There is something large and glass encased in the middle alcove on the right (there are three such large alcoves). It appears to be a man, encased in glass. Several of the goblins are throwing what look to be body parts into the furnaces and others are pouring molten glass atop various arms, legs and heads on the marble tables. One goblin, holding a drum, is banging on it and singing a song in his own tongue.

Two of the goblins are less than ten feet away, at a furnace door feeding the fire. The rest are between twenty and eighty feet away. The one with the drum is about forty feet away on a table against the furnace wall.

Post your actions for the surprise round. I'll try and get a map up later but I'm taking the family to the museum today and won't be able to post again until this evening or tomorrow.

"By the gods!" Jessa surveys the room in horror. An immediate sense of revulsion passes through her at the sight of the goblin atrocities commited on the workers of the glass factory. Then she becomes angry...very angry...wanting nothing more than to exact retribution for their crimes.

Seeing at least some of the goblins as close as ten feet inside the door, she takes advantage of their surprise to cast a quick cantrip. "Go!" she calls out to Kenzo, Eugen, and Magazin, encouraging them to take the fight straight to the nasty creatures.

OOC: Jessa casts daze (DC 14) on one of the nearest goblins to make it easier for the warriors to either take him out or slip past him to face those that are deeper inside the room.

Male Human Ki Mystic Monk 4

Without a glance around the room, Kenzo throws his dagger at the nearest goblin.

He then switches his sword back to his primary hand and closes the distance with his target.

Goblins in the Glassworks! - Surprise Round!
Summary: Gyorgy delays in acting. Eugen charges a goblin (as of yet undazed) and slicies into it. It lets out a surprise grunt of shock and then snarls at the fighter. Magazin casts bless and Kenzo under the affects of the blessing manages to harmlessly bounce his dagger off of the shield of a goblin, thus getting its attention. Gyorgy then springs into action and throws his starknive across the room. It strikes a wall and bounces onto the floor with a clatter that arrests the attention of every other goblin in the room. Jessa casts daze on the goblin Eugen injured and the creature stops in mid snarl. Will Save (DC 14): (1d20-1=5)

Good news and Bad News: The Bad is that the Surprise round was pretty much wasted. The good is that The goblins rolled low on their initiative as well and the party all gets to act first. Work and helping my kids with various schoolwork will likely keep me pretty occupied today but I still plan on getting up a map for the battle today if I can. Actually I meant to do it yesterday but was under the weather and didn't do much at all.

Should we post in any order or initiative order? Any order would be quicker, but leaves open the possibility of somebody with an earlier initiative posting last, but their action having an impact on what someone else would have done. Either way is fine with me, I just want to be clear.

As I get more comfortable with PbP, I am tending more towards the attitude of allowing posts out of order as i realize that some only check a thread once a day or so. Nevertheless, you are right in that sometimes posts end up being wrong because of this, or unecessary (if the enemy is dead for instance). If you know want to posts your actions and rolls out of order go ahead, but if you know you'll be checking in often enough that it won't matter then feel free to wait your turn.

Eugen's goblin goes down.

The goblin next to it is the one that Kenzo will likely rush at following Magazin's action.

There are two other goblins within charge range of the party.

Female Human Wizard (Diviner) 2 / Cleric 1 of Sivhana

Once the others resolve their own attacks, Jessa takes aim one more time on the nearest goblin left standing. "Rob the senses, cloud the mind," she states, and then gestures with her invocation, "Bedezerine!"

OOC: Jessa casts daze (DC 14) on the closest goblin, preferrably one who's about to charge or looks to be gaining the upper hand on one of the warriors. She also makes sure she moves to keep within range of the spell (25 ft.), as necessary. Lastly, she's keeping an eye out for any larger groupings of goblins upon which to eventually target with color spray. But, for the moment, it seems they haven't amassed yet. Next round, perhaps...

Jessa gives Gyorgy an encouraging smile. "Nice!" she says, noting that he uses an entirely different method for casting the same type of enchantment. 'It's funny how two people can learn the same thing in different ways,' she thinks.

Sorry for the wait.

Kenzo charges forward but the goblin, though surprised, manages to dodge aside. Magazin hovers just behind him.

Kenzo moves into a defensive position as he expects the goblin he just rushed to attack him but Jessa’s spell causes the goblin to stop in mid stride. A little bit of drool gathers at the corner of the monster’s mouth as he blinks in confusion.

Will Save vs Daze (DC 14): (1d20-1=0)

Gyorgy focuses on the goblin that is about fifteen feet past the one Jessa just dazed and casts his own version of the spell. That goblin likewise stops, befuddled.

Will Save versus Daze (DC 13): (1d20-1=7)

The goblin on the table in the middle of the room with the drum begins banging on it and breaks into a quick little song, with a catchy beat…

Break the Glass and Smash the Pan,
Hit the fools and kill the man,
Smash…. Smash…
You don’t want to make her mad!
Smash…. Smash…

On goblin laughs uproariously at this and hefts a piece of glass across the room towards the party. It falls short and smashes to pieces in the middle of the room. The one goblin twenty feet from Eugen shrieks and then charges forward at the young fighter.

Charge at Eugen: (1d20+5=21)
damage: (1d4=1)

The breaking glass delights the goblins on the other side of the large room and they all rush to pick up large chunks of glass to throw at the party.
