In and Around Rise of the Runelords

Rise of the Runelords

I'm planning my own game--not RofR precisely, but rather one that happens in its shadow. My characters won't be going after Nualia or the Grauls, but they will be affected by many of the events of the game as they go about their own stories.

I'm looking at setting the game in Ilsurian, a small town right on the edge between the recruitment zones of Magnimar in the far west and Korvosa in the far east. Established shortly after the fall of the Chelaxian god Aroden by First Sword Ilsur as a staging point to return and murder the new family of monarchs. Time passed and his people, once bitter soldiers, have had children who are primarily fisherfolk and woodsmen--at least on the surface.

I'd like there to be a hidden underground, dedicated to the god Rovagug, who still remember their bile and desire the heart's blood of the ruling family of Korvosa. They routinely slip back and forth amid a screen of travelling merchants to engage in terrorist attacks and disappear back home during the ensuing chaos. One of them has been captured, and rather than execute him--they have let him escape, hoping to track him back to their lair.

I was originally thinking of tying this into Alanzist's lesser runewells of wrath--but I don't know if that's stretching or not. Then again, if there's one under an out of the way place like Sandpoint it might make sense for there to be others. It would be nice to trigger this group toward some large act of dispicableness if they mistook the nightmares and rage as a vision from their dark god that their time was at hand. Then again, perhaps it isn't a runewell--maybe it's something else related to Alanzist and his obsession with wrath that has festered in this small rural town.

Anyhow just thinking out loud. Feel free to tell me what you think.

Spoiler:
I think that this would require tinkering with the borders. Didn't Sandpoint represent Alaznist's eastermost holdings? She faced off against Karzoug with her towers (eg the Old Light) and he had his humongous statues (eg Thistletop).

It's your game so you can make these changes if you like, of course. :)
