The Origin of Drakes

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

I was reading over the flame drake today and had a fun idea. Thought I'd toss it out there. I was looking at the art for the flame drake and thought it seemed like across between a gold and a red. That got me thinking...what if that was ancestorally the big cause of the chism between metallics and chromatics in Golarion? If rival dragon breeds mate, their young are born...different. They are little more than beasts with no power over magic and lukewarm cunning and intellect. The huge taboo against mating together created the foundations for other differences between them, which eventually took the chromatics toward a dark and tragic path of hatred.

The more I mull it over, the more I like it.

You know, I kind of like that. Its an interesting take on things. Might be worth extrapolating to other "non true" dragon types as well. Good thinking.

Grim, I like the idea of cross-color coitus as well (as you'll see in PF4).

You have an interesting idea there that is a little different from one I had as well. I would like to explore the idea a little more some time down the road, and I'm sure what I've read here will influence my thoughts then. :)

Well good. Glad I could help. Honestly I'm really looking forward to the next issue with the dragon writeups. I love what's been developing with Pathfinder. Everything seems to be finding a very fresh presentation so far, but yet at the same time very classic. I'm impressed. I'm excited to see how the dragons turn out. One nice thing is that dragons are finally released from the old Tiamat vs. Bahamut dichotomy--meaning they hopefully get to find other, deeper reasons for their divergent alignments and opposition of one another. That should be fun to see fleshed out. Not to mention I'm just jazzed to see what they all look like. I've gotten to see little hints and teasers here and there in the art so far and it's got me really curious.

That's a very spicy take, Grimcleaver. (Giggles. Mike said *coitus*)

Also reminds me of Dark Sun drakes.

I also very much look forward to all dragon kind in upcoming issues.

I have a hard time imagining Dragon reproductive processes as "spicy" at all really. Being egg layers, I'm not sure there's much spice involved at all. Eee-yeah. Just not my thing I guess. But yeah I think something like that's interesting, an exploration of some of the more profound social issues between dragon types as well as an examination of where some of the non-"true" dragons of the setting come from.

Not spicy in terms of explicit visuals. I referred to the evolution of animosity for soiling one's breed of dragon with another breed to spread a race of abominations that spread disgrace and shame to all dragons. It adds another level of interest to dragons besides the cliche treasure hoarder stereotype. Not only do the parents of the two mating dragons talk-the-talk, but they actually get proven correct when the offspring turns out to be magically inept and intellectually inert. They have evidence to back up their bigoted views, and they can ignite a cross-dragon breed race war.
