Skill points / Ranks and Intelligence Loss

3.5/d20/OGL

I can't find any refrences to losing Ranks in skills if you have Intelligence points permanently drained from you. (Possibly because this does not happen) Is this the case? Help please, a wizards leveling up is on the line. :-)

You do not lose skill ranks from Intelligence loss. However, if your stat is permanently reduced and you gain a level with that reduced stat, you gain fewer points for that level than you would have at your previous score.

Ah ha! I knew I wasn't looking at this the right way. Thanks!

Likewise, if the character permanently increases Intelligence, they do not gain extra skill points for levels already gained. Which, unfortunately, makes statting-up wizard NPCs a pain (just using the Elite Array means 15 Int at 1st-3rd, 16 Int at 4th-7th, 17 Int at 8th-11th, 18 Int at 12th-15th, 19 Int at 16th-19th, and 20 Int at 20th without counting an increase from a tome of clear thought).

By RAW, a permanent Int boost does not grant retroactive skill points. However I and quite a few others house rule otherwise.

Especially for the bad NPC enemies I just use their high end stat version to determine skill points as it makes my life simpler and they almost never have much chance where it becomes overwhelming to the party.

Fighter: Whew that was one tough vampire!
Cleric: I will have a greater restoration cast on the party in just a few moments.... *shuffle shuffle* now where is that scroll?
Rogue: These new daggers of positive energy kick ***! Finally I can backstab undead! Yeah!
Mage: Good thing that Count Salvatore there didn't get to use his drum set (2 ranks in perform), show us his black rose collection (6 ranks in profession gardener) or challenge us to a trivia game (2 extra points in each knowledge!!!).
Party all together: Heck yeah. We were so lucky!

Well enough sarcasm... I guess... for now....

Yes, the Intelligence mechanic is somewhat unfortunate. I makeup for it (and compound it) by allowing Int boosting items (headbands) to affect skills gained when worn for most of the previous level.

I figure if it's not retroactive in the good way, shouldn't be retroactive in the bad way either.
