I just picked this up a bit ago and it's a blast. Anyone else playing this game? Or is it just WoW and Eve around here :(

I play GW. A lot. Which campaign did you get?

I have been playing GW since it came out.

All three campaigns and Eye of the North.

I eagerly await GW2.

Liberty's Edge

Just beat Eye of the North Friday, have already finished the other three campaigns with my (assa)sin. I've found it to be quite enjoyable.

What is 'Guild Wars'?

Liberty's Edge

Guild Wars is a Massive Multiplayer Online RPG (MMORPG) which is run by Arena Net. While it hasn't had as many subscribers as World of Warcraft, its still sold Millions of its games world wide. There's a sort of rivalry beteen GW and WoW in that some people have played both and claim one to be superior to the other. Alternatively some play both on a regular basis. I've never played WoW but my brother-in-law is an avid WoW player so we've discussed some of the differences. Apologies if my info on WoW is incorrect, but I believe some of the differences between them are:

1. WoW has a max level of 70 (used to be 60, but recent expansion upped this). GW has a max of 20 but you continue to earn skill points (used to learn skills and now make items) after reaching that cap.

2. WoW has multiple races, generally split between the Hoarde (orcs, undead, blood elves, taurens) and the Alliance (humans, dwarves, night elves, gnomes), each race has a limit to the classes they can choose. GW has only the human race (announced that GW2 will change this)but you choose a primary class (which can never change for that character) and a secondary class (which you may change after certain points in storyline).

3. WoW has had one storeline, but with multiple expansions. GW has had 3 campaigns (one with a European feel, one with an Oriental feel, one with and Arabian/African feel) with a newly released expansion for max level characters (Eye of the North).

4. Not sure how WoW's skill system works, but I've seen my BiL's screen covered with skills/powers. GW you can only have 8 skills equiped at a time, but you have utter flexibility assigning attribute points amoung the category of skills.

5. WoW charges a monthly fee of $15 (not sure if this is accurate or not). GW has no subscription fee, buy a game and you have unlimited play time.

There are a lot of other differences I have not mentioned, but I wanted to give you a general overview.

And don't forget one other important thing....

The graphics in Guild Wars are far more realistic and look much better.

You may be restructed to playing human characters in GW, but they all look good.

Wow elves have the stupidest ears I have ever seen. Elven ears are traditionally pointy... but wow elves can use them to got pickles out of a jar.

Hmmm. Online, you say?
Hmmmmm...

Spoiler:
Pleck! How can a ridicoulous online game ever compare with D&D?!

Online games and tabletop games are not in the same league. That's why most claim only to be MMO and not MMORPG. Not much role-playing (if any).

But fun can be had running around hacking things to bits in between the important tabletop gaming sessions.

Now, if I could convince my friends to be available to play games 24/7 I would not bother with online games. But sadly I can't.

It can't. It picks up where pen and paper RPG's leave off. They complement each other.

RPG: Creative, flexible, face to face interaction with friends.
+MMORPG: always playable (assuming net access), don't need to wait for late players, allows overworked DM's to actually play once in awhile.
= Happy RPGer (at least I am)

Sorry, not meaning to offend anyone. I'm just frustrated, because my brother is so obsessed with Stormreach, that he never plays D&D anymore. Gaming Day is over, too, though it was fun. And not meaning to whine or rant, but I can't get onto a PbP. so, of course, I got kinda annoyed when I saw a thread about an online game. Apologies.

No offense taken. Each to their own.

I would never play an online game if it meant cancelling a tabletop game. Tabletop FTW.

Playing with friends can never be replaced with online games for me, but online games can help fill the time between sessions.

I have made friends in online games and we chat OOC in game and via MSN.

I'm not convinced by PbP either, but not tried it to be fair.

Well I am horribly offended. Completely and utterly.

Or maybe I'm just hungry.

Offended? Hungry?

Um...

I'm going to go with hungry. ;)

Nothing to apologize for, I happen to agree with you. MMORPG's are not the same as D&D to me, but they can be a lot of fun nonetheless.

Would any other GW players like to start a "friends" list from Paizo? I'm usually on a little every day (but that will change for law school finals) and I'd happy to give tips/assistance where possible.

Oh me! Me me me! I can't get past one mission in Nightfall, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. ;D

My main character (also my Nightfall and GWEN character) is Ingrid Darklight. Everyone can feel free to add me to their friend list.

Liberty's Edge

My main character is Striker Darkfate, feel free to add me too. If you whisper me and I don't respond just keep saying something. I'll notice and respond eventually...

What mission are you having trouble with? I'll glady give you my method and if we're on at the same time I'll help with it. In the meantime let me link my two favorite sources of GW info.

The Offical Guildwiki: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page
The Original Guildwiki: http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page

Between those two pages I've gotten enough info to get past every mission (except for Heart of the Shiverpeaks, stupid gunpowder run) without other players.

Silver Crusade

I play GW, as well as LOTRo as well

have a few characters on GW, 1 each for each campaign, & started anther one for GW:EN (as my normal GW game is only around 12 or 13th + didn't want to use her anyways).

GW is fun but it is one of those games that I play for awile then drop out for awile, then come back--nice that is doesn't have a subscrip to it.

since I don't have a local group, computer rpgs is all I have for my gaming experience & I agree they will never replace the comradre of a tabletop game, but what can you do when you have no group. Be very thankful, if you have group that you get to game with, that is all I can say.

Nice . . . some fellow paizoians in GW . . . . can't believe I picked this game back up and forgot to check hear for people to game with.

I'm ussually only able to get on on weekends, but my main character is Crym Sin . . I've got all three campaigns, and the EotN expansion.

Kassil Roshah; Mike and I putter around as members of the Collateral Damage Adventuring Guild.

I played Guild Wars; still have it; beautiful game when it came out; a bit boring though after a while; has its cool moments though. Your charactes sure look nice :)

Provided that no one else has started one with Xfire...

Just got Guild Wars and thought I'd resurrect this thread. My buddy who I game with on Sundays called me last week excited about this game, and indicated there was no monthly fee, so I picked up the Game of the Year Edition (which came with Factions) and the Eye of the North Expansion.

I've played a total of 1 hour, but already like it. No monthly fee, and the fact that once we embark on a mission, we will not have to deal with other parties performing the same task really makes me smile...

My character is currently a Level 2 Warrior/Necromancer named Bjorn Gunnarsson.

My buddy and I are going to pick one night a week to play and try out some of these missions.

Any words of advice from veteran Guild Wars players?

Liberty's Edge

I know this is an old thread and all but if there are any Guild Wars players out there that want to hang out in game add my main character Jashdar Fin to your buddy list and hit me up when I get online. Just tell me that you know me from Paizo message boards.

My main character is Xithica Vandel and I have all of the expansions so I can adventure where ever.
