So wrong it's right [spoilers]

Rise of the Runelords

My party has a good mix of players who are tactical, players who role-play to their detriment, and players without impulse control. I thought I'd share the following tidbits from last night's session:

Spoiler:
Not seeing anything, our dwarf fighter walks into Malfeshnekor's room. Having readied to attack anything that was not us, I move up and Mal hits my AC with a 2 on the AoO roll (our eyes widen). The scout tries the same thing, but gets bitten to dying with another AoO (we start feeling fear). When the dwarf bravely tells the rest of the party to shut the door and drag the wounded to safety...the monk does so.

After surviving the fight described above, we enjoy some downtime until the following happens:

Spoiler:
The Sheriff warns us that Katrine Vinder has been murdered, and that he's thrown her father in jail to cool off. He asks us to discreetly investigate. Now, Ven already distrusts our priest because of an incident with Shayliss, but our scout had also been attempting to woo Shayliss by leaving heads and scalps on their doorstep. How does the monk decide to befriend Ven? By revealing his sihedron medallion and asking if Ven's familiar with the symbol (the answer would be yes, since it had been carved into Katrine's flesh).

Would anyone else like to share a groan-worthy moment? :)

Spoiler:
Wait a sec, I thought the sihedron rune was only carved into Harker, not both of them.

Mr. Pall is right.

Spoiler:
Katrine was not on the list of the greedy, so there would be no reason to carve the rune in her. (The greedy one in the family is apparently Shayliss, because she's greedy for...Attention, yeah, that's the ticket.)

Besides, Katrine was sent through the log splitter, so her corpse would have been hard to search for clues.

By the way, Alex, are you one of the PCs? Which character is yours?

I have to give a salute to the dwarf. Not often someone plays to the hilt. I remember an article about actions just like that in Dragon. In which a low level paladin told the party to run with some villagers or some such while he/she single handedly held up a small horde of enemies for a few minutes. I was a great read. Those kind of actions are what last years down the road in my mind.

So this one is for the dwarf. (drains what is left of my Grolsch)

Did you guys ever open the door again and retrieve enough of the dwarf to raise him? Or is he still dog food?

Spoiler:
Baltin the dwarf fighter actually held Mal off for two rounds before Sandoz the warlock re-opened the door and covered his retreat. Aesop the cleric had healed Zu the scout and me (Jerk the cloistered cleric) enough for us all to run on our initiative, but then Mal stopped at the threshold. What a relief!

Thanks for your clarification about Katrine. The DM has confirmed that I misunderstood -- we were this close to writing off the entire family.

Spoiler:
We reasoned that if Katrine died for her Avarice, the Seven killer would off Ven for his Wrath and Shayliss for her Lust.
I love this adventure path!
